24.01.2022 BE QUICK - MODIFIED PARADE GOING MOBILE AT 1PM: Santa’s Boulevard has been cancelled tonight due to a wet weather forecast but there is still one more chance to see the festive floats this year. The floats will return to the City Council works depot on Commercial Street West via Jubilee Highway under police escort at 1pm. "Following the Toy Run today, the floats will travel from Blue Lake Sports Park down Jubilee Highway and on to Sutton Avenue before being returned to the de...pot," council acting chief executive Barbara Cernovskis said. "The community is welcome to watch the procession for a last chance look at the floats for this year, with a reminder to practise social distancing and for people to remain in their vehicles." More than 800 cars streamed through the Blue Lake Sports Park last night to see the static Christmas spectacle which included 15 floats, twinkling lights, decorations and Christmas music. We are expecting rain this afternoon and evening, so we are very disappointed to have to cancel the event tonight, council community events team leader Denise Richardson said. With all the electronic equipment required for lighting and sound at the event, rain is a safety issue. The floats are also not designed to withstand rain as they are usually only out on display for a few hours during the usual Christmas parade down Commercial Street.

06.01.2022 MAN SAVVY TO SCAMMERS: Mount Gambier Police have issued a public reminder of a phone scam potentially targeting the region. It follows a call by scammers to a Mount Gambier businessman around 9.30am on Tuesday from a Sydney phone number. The caller advised the man he had a warrant and a senior police officer would be in touch. He immediately received a second call with the Caller ID showing the phone number of the Mount Gambier Police Station. Luckily, the intended victim wa...s switched on and immediately realised he was dealing with scammers. Scammers use software to alter the Caller ID, changing the incoming phone number to mimic the number of a real organisation or person. This technique is commonly used to add a false sense of legitimacy in a range of scams. The phone numbers are usually associated with police stations, government bodies, accountants and other reputable organisations. Although they can change the caller ID, they do not have access to the actual phone number itself. This means that if you were to ring back the phone number, it would actually go the intended recipient, not the scammers. Police advise if in doubt, hang up the phone and call the person back on a known, reputable number. To report a cybercrime please go to www.cyber.gov.au/report or visit www.police.sa.gov.au/scams or www.scamwatch.gov.au for more information on scams and how to avoid them.
