21.01.2022 If anyone asks, we DEFINITELY look this fabulous when writing up your research reports. Yep. Yes. Definitely true. We are absolutely not wearing the same t-shirt and shorts for the third day in a row and debating the necessity of a bra when working from the office at home.... 20.01.2022 In honour of St Patrick's Day here is the Irish Tug of War team in 1899. St Patrick's Day celebrates St Patrick, the patron saint Ireland. After being kidnapped in the late-4th century and enslaved in Ireland, he escaped to his native Britain. He returned to Ireland to convert the Irish to Christianity and by the time of his death on 17 March in the year 461 he had established monasteries, churches and schools. Today, St Patrick's Day is mostly known for celebrating all thin...gs Irish, including wearing green, going to your local Irish pub and shamrocks in Guinness. Image from State Library Victoria

20.01.2022 Have you even found a treasure in somewhere completely unexpected?

19.01.2022 A recently completed family tree for a very happy birthday girl. Jill's family surprised her with a family tree for her (milestone) birthday recently. We made discoveries that the family had no idea about and found links closer to home than they had realised. This has not only piqued Jill's interest, but the rest of her family's as well. Are you interested in having your own family tree researched? Get in touch and we'd love to chat.

19.01.2022 "I ought never to have got married, I want nothing from you", said Mrs Kelly. It wasn't until 1975, when the then Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam enacted the Family Law Act which enabled a 'no-fault divorce'. Prior to this, one party had to prove that the other was at fault (ie. adultery, violence, etc.). From 1861 when Victoria's divorce records begin, it was not only difficult, it could be humiliating and costly to petition your partner for divorce. Quite often cases wo...uld be splashed throughout the tabloids whereby extra humiliation would ensue. Divorce records can answer questions when it comes to family history research. It can also depict sadness and heartbreak. Mr Kelly had, "begged her to stay for my sake and the sake of the child Albert Sidney as we had left the eldest with her mother in Wellington. She said 'I don't want you or the children. I am going on my own'." This was a discovery made when actually looking into something else about Mr Kelly and his (second wife) and child. As so often happens, I got sucked into the rabbit hole of research and opened up a whole other can of worms... See more

17.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? Meccano was first created in 1898 by Frank Hornby. The kits were designed for kids to explore the principles of mechanical engineering. Now, we know absolutely nothing about mechanical engineering, but we bloody know about history and family history to be precise.... We'll put our own sorts of puzzle pieces and nuts and bolts into place. Image from Museums Victoria

11.01.2022 What did the women in your family do? More often than not women and their lives can be overlooked in the history books. Quite simply, they just weren't written about as much or as thoroughly as their male counterparts. That is, unless they were seen doing something illegal, immoral or taboo by the standards of the day. We love discovering more about women in history and telling their stories, their HERstory.... Is there a mysterious woman in your family you'd like to try and discover more about? Contact us to see how we can help. See more

07.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? Between 1838 and 1902 it was illegal to swim during the day at a number of beaches around Sydney. The New South Wales authorities feared that swimming during the day would raise "morality concerns". Anyone breaking the rules could come face-to-face with 'Inspector of Nuisances'.... 07.01.2022 If you love 'Who Do You Think You Are?', you will love this too! The second season of 'Every Family Has a Secret' begins tomorrow night on SBS Australia at 7.30pm and I am sure it will uncover a few mysteries and find some skeletons in a few closets. Exactly what we love.

07.01.2022 Let's call it a throwback Tuesday to that time we were lucky enough to be interviewed in the fab Frankie Magazine in 2015. We had only really just started out in our little biz and we were (and still are) so thrilled to be interviewed about being 'History Detectives'. Five years on and we are still searching out answers to all your research queries and making discoveries about your families, ancestors and homes. ... Thanks for continuing to support our baby, Born & Bred. Keep bringing us your mysteries. Every single day we thank you for supporting our small business. Being in Victoria, we hope that we can actually see each other in person again sometime soon. See more

06.01.2022 Sunday's spent with man's (and woman's) best friend. Is there really anything better? Go on, we'll wait...

06.01.2022 Heavy work wasn't always confined to the realms of adulthood. Many children were required to leave school in their early teens to be able to help provide for the family. An education wasn't going to put food on the table. Did your young ancestors leave school to go into the labour force? What did they do?

06.01.2022 I'll take one of each, please. That's right, it's #caturday. Image from State Library Victoria

01.01.2022 Maps and plans and properties, oh my! Getting down to the nitty gritty of land records and property research. There's nothing quite like being able to find that little parcel of land on a huge map. It's like finally finding that needle in a haystack. (Ok, it's the small things that count...)
