22.01.2022 IBUPROFEN DOES NOT AGGRAVATE COVID -19 VIRUS. Some weeks ago there was mass hysteria about ibuprofen( nurofen) aggravating the COVID - 19 virus and how people should only consider paracetamol (Panadol) for pain and fever relief. So as a health practitioner I decided to do some reading about these claims after my shelves were cleaned out of Panadol. Nurofen remained in surplus and I stood in my shop in dismay as every customer came in looking for Panadol for themselves or thei...r children in case.... why is this happening I said to myself?! This makes absolutely no sense! I tried my hardest to educate people but most were already convinced by social media and the press that nurofen was bad! I read further... the claims on various articles likening nurofen to drugs such as prednisone that suppress the immune system. If you have any pharmaceutical knowledge you will know that ibuprofen and prednisone are two VERY different drugs. Yes prednisone does suppress the immune system. No, ibuprofen does not and cannot be compared with the likes of steroid drugs like prednisone. There was zero clinical trials or evidence presented for this claim and yet it all went viral. People were looking for Panadol like it would save a life. Fast forward 6 weeks and countless conversations with customers to deter the hunt for Panadol over nurofen. As well as GSK doing very well for themselves as a company (which by the way I actually like - their a good company and they really care about their customers, they have their morals in the right place) and I finally get this email tonight.... just thought I’d share it. Going back to my point- Please don’t listen to the media, please don’t stock up on unnecessary medication. It’s a waste of your time and money. 01.01.2022 The panic is contagious... I’m alarmed by the influence of media on peoples behaviour. Unfortunately this brain washing and hoarding behaviour that has come about due to the coronavirus can’t be contained by hand washing. But people need to realise that it’s all going to be OK and by causing your neighbour to run out of toilet paper when you have 30 rolls in your cupboard, will indeed cause a lock down - not due to any virus of-course, but because they’re too embarrassed to go out in public!
