13.01.2022 Correct way to rig a fresh squid strip. Method uses ultra sharp fine-wire Gamakatsu 4/0 octopus hooks pinned in the centrline of the bait. The top hook is snel...led bottom hook is conventional locked blood. This is deadly on gummy shark and snapper when fished in strong current or kingfish when slow trolled. It does not spin and the secret to this is make sure the final presentation is dead straight like this, the top hook is fixed not sliding, and you fish with your reel in gear with fighting drag. 12.01.2022 Thanks to a 13 FISH caller, Fisheries Officers were able to intercept a male kayaker at Williamstown with well over the snapper bag limit! The caller had observ...ed the man returning to his vehicle and dropping off fish, before going back out fishing on his kayak. When Officers arrived on the scene, they intercepted the man at his vehicle and found one undersize bream and 27 snapper, 4 which were 40cm or over. The bag limit for snapper is 10, with only 3 allowed to be 40cm or more. The man received two infringement notices totalling $968 for possessing undersize bream and exceeding the snapper catch limit. If you see or suspect illegal fishing, call 13FISH (133474) anytime. Make the call and make the difference!
08.01.2022 Fisheries Victoria research points to greater numbers of catchable King George whiting (KGW) in Port Phillip Bay in two to three years following one of the best... larval collection seasons on record. Surveys found the third highest number of KGW post-larvae (fish smaller than 20 mm) in Port Phillip Bay since surveys began in 1998. Eight sites around the Bay are surveyed annually using a fine mesh net to capture small whiting. Results from last spring's surveys indicate the next peak season for KGW catches will begin in 2015/16. Scientists have found the number of young KGW entering the Bay has been relatively low over the last four years compared to an above average period during the mid-2000s. Such a downturn in KGW was the result of natural recruitment cycles and was to be expected. KGW spawn in ocean waters, possibly along the far western Victorian and South Australian coast, during winter. The tiny larvae then drift for three months before eventually making their way into the Bay. Strong westerly winds had resulted in more larvae entering the Bay last spring compared to 2012. Westerly winds and currents bring the larvae into the Bay where they stay for up to four years. At this point, they leave the Bay forever, returning to oceanic waters to spawn. The success of KGW entering the Bay each year is highly variable and is monitored to forecast the strength of the fishery. KGW generally reach the minimum size of 27cm in two to three years. Fisheries Victoria, the University of Melbourne, Deakin University and the SARDI are in the second year of a 3-year project to determine where Victorian KGW are spawned, their movement patterns and the replenishment of populations in south-east Australia. The project is funded by a $186,000 contribution from fishing licence fees and the FRDC on behalf of the Australian Government. See more
08.01.2022 The South Gippsland Shire Council is currently replacing the boat ramp jetty at Port Welshpool. The new jetty will be 30cm higher than the old one and a little ...wider. It will feature aluminium railings, ladders, solar lighting and a new concrete footpath where it meets land. The floating platform previously at the end of the jetty will be reattached when the upgrade is complete in late August. For now, the floating platform has been repositioned and provides temporary waterside access. The new jetty is funded by the Department of Transport's Boating Safety and Facilities Program and the State Government's $16 million Recreational Fishing Initiative (RFI). The Recreational Fishing Initiative has funded over 70 projects throughout Victoria, worth more than $2.25 million, and delivers projects in addition to those funded by your fishing licence fees. 07.01.2022 Do you know why there is a season for Murray cod? Murray cod closed season is fast approaching. The closed season is from midnight on September 1st to December ...the 1st. Recreational anglers are reminded that all waters within Sunraysia are closed to fishing for our iconic Murray cod during this time. You may know that the season is closed because of the breeding cycle, but do you know the consequences of targeting or even fishing during the closed season? Murray cod are very caring parents and the closed season is in place to help protect the eggs and the young of Murray cod. Catching a female Murray cod leading up to the their breeding cycle can cause a miscarriage or they can reabsorb their eggs, this basically means that they will not spawn. Male Murray cod are very protective and spend a large amount of time and effort protecting their eggs from predators. Just by catching a Murray cod during the closed season, chances are, you just killed 20,000+ eggs! Do you think that process is sustainable? It is also against the law to purposely target Murray Cod during closed season, but it is really hard to determine 'What is classed as targeting Murray cod'. This is only our opinion, but we believe that it is using artificial baits like spinnerbaits, crankbaits, surface lures and any hard bodied lure. Because, lets face it, if you're using big lures you're trying to catch a Murray cod, and we could argue for days about the 'but Golden perch take big lures', but let's not! If you wish to target other native fish species during cod closing season and you are using any artificial bait, please use the smaller types. This would be any hard bodied lure that is 60 mm or less, or spinnerbaits which would be 3/8 oz and smaller and without big plastic bodies. Hopefully these small changes in practice will help reduce the chance of catching a Murray cod. Ideally it is best not to fish at all. The penalty notice for taking Murray Cod from closed NSW waters start at $500, but remember there are places that you can fish for that are open all year round (check out your local fisheries website) Remember this: When im on the nest give me a rest! This message has been brought to you by OzFish Sunraysia and the Nangiloc Fishing Club.
07.01.2022 A 62 year old man from Clayton will be charged on summons for several alleged fishing offences after an inspection of his boat by Fisheries Officers discovered ...41 snapper, 23 of which were undersize. The two plain clothed Officers observed the boat returning to the Mordialloc boat ramp after dark last night with one male aboard. On being approached, the man allegedly dropped a blue mesh bag into Mordialloc Creek, which was later retrieved by Officers and found to contain 31 snapper, the smallest of which measured 24.3cm. The minimum size for snapper is 28cm. A search of the man's boat revealed 10 snapper, which were openly on display. The daily bag limit for snapper is 10, of which no more than 3 can equal or exceed 40cm. In total, the man's catch of 41 snapper is more than four times the bag limit and if convicted he faces fines of up to $5,760. Hindering Officers in the execution of their duties, by preventing them from inspecting fish catches, is a serious offence punishable by up to $17,323 or 12 months imprisonment. Fisheries Officers seized the entire catch and the man's fishing rods. See more

05.01.2022 Recreational anglers are being reminded to obey snapper catch limits following the seizure of another boat on Port Phillip Bay by Fisheries Officers on Friday m...orning. Officers have already seized two boats on Port Phillip Bay as a result of anglers exceeding the bag limit just three weeks into the season. In the latest case, Officers allegedly found 17 snapper aboard a boat at St. Kilda. When they inspected the boat, the two men on board presented six snapper over 40cm, which represented the maximum legal catch. But a subsequent search allegedly revealed a further 11 snapper over 40cm concealed in a compartment of the boat. The daily bag limit for snapper over 40cm is three fish per person. The two men had their boat and fishing equipment seized and will be charged on summons with exceeding the bag limit. See more

02.01.2022 Fisheries Officers have apprehended seven anglers along the Rubicon River in the past week for exceeding the bag limit for brook trout and other offences. Offic...ers are maintaining an active presence at the Rubicon in the wake of misinformation allegedly circulated in social media that no catch limits applied to brook trout in the river. Brook trout are subject to a bag limit and possession limit of five fish per day, with no minimum or maximum size. As a result of surveillance and inspections by Officers, 94 fish were seized and seven anglers have been fined or will be charged on summons with offences including: - exceeding bag and possession limits for unlisted species (brook trout) and salmonids - the use of trout or salmon ova as bait - failure to immediately release unwanted fish - exceeding the number of salmonids over 35cm. The offences were detected along a 5km stretch of river between Camp Jungai and the Thornton Road Bridge. See more
