14.01.2022 NEW Blog Post In this blog post Dr Elise Fuller discusses the misconception that during pregnancy, women develop "weak glutes". Sometimes it can be frustrating to read all about how during pregnancy our glutes get "lazy". This myth is widely accepted and it doesn't give the full picture of what your body is doing during pregnancy. Elise talks about the mechanics of your pelvis and the WHY of your glutes not behaving in the way they did prior to your pregnancy. ... If you'd like to know more about why your glutes shouldn't be considered "weak" and "lazy", click the link below and read the full post. https://boroondaraosteopathy.com.au/yourglutsarenotlazy/ #balwyn #balwynnorth #northbalwyn #boroondara #boroondaralife #villagebalwynnorth #doncaster #kew #bulleen #melbourne #osteopathy #osteopath #osteo #movementmedicine #muscleanatomy #musclemechanics #musclesinmotion #biomechanics #movementtherapy #freedomtomove #movementhealth #movefreely #anatomyinmotion #garywardsanatomyinmtion #pregnancy #pregnant #mumsofmelbourne #mums #mumtobe Media Source: https://unsplash.com/photos/ux53SGpRAHU

13.01.2022 Welcome to the team Nicki!! Nicki is the newest addition to our Boroondara Osteopathy family. She'll be a friendly face ready to welcome you into the clinic at reception and she's always ready to have a chat. Nicki is about to start her third year of university studying osteopathy at Victoria University. Here's what Nicki has to say about why she loves osteopathy:... "Studying osteopathy wasn’t actually something that occurred to me initially during my school years, but was rather a decision I made through the process of deduction. After trying my hand at a variety of different roles, I felt like none of them truly resonated with me. Many years and sleepless nights later, I decided to take the plunge and give osteopathy a go. Now, upon the completion of my second year of the course, I can honestly say I’ve finally found my feet! The principles, practices and values that define osteopathy, are things I relate to and appreciate so very much. I love the way in which osteopathy brings people together, and the fact that people entrust us to assist them in their journey to achieving optimal health and well-being. I couldn’t be happier to be joining the team at Boroondara Osteopathy, and look forward to being able to contribute to your journey" Some fun facts about Nicki include that she is a die hard Adelaide Crows fan She spent a year living in Spain and backpacking around Europe And she is a passionate cook with her own garden of fresh produce #balwyn #balwynnorth #northbalwyn #boroondara #boroondaralife #villagebalwynnorth #doncaster #kew #bulleen #melbourne #osteopathy #osteopath #osteo #VU #Vicuni #victoriauniversity #health #wellbeing

12.01.2022 Have you been told you have bowed legs? Genu Varum is the technical name for bowed legs. Our legs go through a natural developmental sequence when we are young. From 20-22 months of age, we develop bowlegs. This then straightens out and keeps going past neutral into knocked knees, peaking at 4 years of age and this should all come back to a normal position again by the time we get to age 7. Sometimes, they come back too far and our legs look like they’re bowed. It’s not a ...mystery though, there is always a reason. So why do they stay this way? Having bowed legs may look awkward, but the cause is not often the knees themselves. The knee may have been forced into that outward position because something further up or down (possibly the hip or ankle) has displaced the normal knee mechanics causing them to bend outwards. As we weight bare, instead of our weight being evenly distributed through all the joints of the lower body, we might be avoiding putting pressure through an old hip injury or surgery (even childhood hernia operations), or a previously injured ankle. So the knee is the one that buckles or starts to face inwards to accommodate the load. With the knees having to succumb to the loads placed on them, they are a mechanical strategy because somewhere another joint is not moving enough or moving too much. It’s through investigating the joints that we unlock the reasons for the bowed legs, and then re-train the root cause rather than focusing on the knee! #movementtherapy #movementmedicine #bodymovement #teachyourbody #movefreely #freedomtomove #movementismedicine #movementhealth #humanmovement #gait #osteo #osteopathy #osteopath #balwyn #northbalwyn #kew #boroondara #kneepain #biomechanics

10.01.2022 Joints have great potential, they are not a lost cause! Do you feel like you can’t sit for as long, walk for as long or exercise the same way you used to? We are told it is just wear and tear, we can’t do anything about it, you won’t get any better, its just the way it is now. The term gets thrown around a lot, health professionals find it’s a nicer way of saying it could be osteoarthritic and there’s nothing we can do.... If our joints are moving they way they are designed to, using all 3 planes of motion, the muscles around them also have the opportunity to contract and relax when they need to because the joint motion is telling them when to do it. If the joint is dysfunctional the muscle might be overused or underused and this can possibly result in muscle tightness, tendonitis, ongoing trigger points or strains. If we can re-train each plane of motion to be available and working efficiently then our long-term cranky joints have more options with movement and the joint will function better. The best thing is when we move more, our joints self-lubricate so we can continue to do this. See more

06.01.2022 My back hurts. We’re often asked if we get bored treating the same old stuff, because back pain is such a common complaint. They might all point to the same spot that hurts, but back pain looks different in everyone when you look hard enough! Which means that treatment differs in every person. So definitely no boredom here! In fact, working through a person’s musculoskeletal puzzle is what makes our work so exciting. Treating back pain may look like a number of diffe...rent things. For example: We might need to teach the ankle and foot to move better to allow the knee to bend comfortably. If the knee bends comfortably then the lumbar spine (low back) can achieve a clean extension. Was this lack of extension the cause of back pain? We might need to improve the ribcage and the pelvis movements so that the spine can move freely between the two structures. Maybe it comes down to rounded shoulders and shoulder blade mobility, that is pulling on the muscles in the back, causing tension and pain. One site of pain, so many possibilities as to why! Knowing that, there are different variations in compensatory patterns is vital in solving many musculoskeletal complaints. We love showing people some of these possibilities, so they understand more about their body and their movement! #osteo #osteopathy #osteopath #anatomyinmotion #garywardsanatomyinmotion #whatthefoot #flowmotionmodel #wakeyourbodyup #movementtherapy #movementmedicine #bodymovement #teachyourbody #movefreely #freedomtomove #movementismedicine #movementhealth #bodymovers #balwyn #northbalwyn #kew #boroondara #boroondaralife #balwynnorthvillage #greythorn #doncaster #melbourne #sciatica #mybackhurts #backpain See more

04.01.2022 New blog post! In this blog by Dr Tristan Joss, he talks about the myth that osteopaths treat the same thing all the time. On the surface level we might seem to have the same types of pain, but once you dive into the history things start to look very different. For this reason we have to treat each person that walks through our door differently. We don't want to give our patients the "cookie-cutter" treatment, we want to work with you to find a long-term solution.... If you're interested in how osteopaths treat each person differently you can read more about it here: https://boroondaraosteopathy.com.au/osteo-myth-1/ #osteo #osteopathy #backpain #neckpain #movement #movementpractice #treatment #pain #osteopath #wakeyourbodyup #neckpain #bodymovement #movefreely #freedomtomove #movementismedicine #movementhealth #bodymovers #balwyn #northbalwyn #kew #boroondara #boroondaralife #balwynnorthvillage #greythorn #doncaster #melbourne #sciatica #mybackhurts
