25.01.2022 Heat stroke is real! All your furry friends could be at risk, here are some easy ways to keep your furrbabies safe this summer! - walk your dog in the early morning or late afternoon. - if you can’t keep your hand on the hot concrete for longer than 5 seconds your doggies paws aren’t safe from being burnt. (Remember we wear shoes! They don’t) - place multiple water bowls outside in shady areas and make sure there is unlimited access to water. ... - cooling pads are wonderful to keep your pet cool place them inside or in their kennel. - keep your animals shelter house away from direct sunlight - never leave a dog in a car even with the window down your furbaby is not safe from the heat. Heat stroke or heat stress can be shown through the following symptoms - heavy panting - bright red gums - difficulty breathing - inability to walk straight - vomiting - diarrhoea - collapsing Some breeds struggle more in the heat than others such as huskies, brachycephalic breeds such as pugs and bulldog breeds, long haired cats, long haired dogs and dogs that have originated from colder climates. If you notice your animal having any of the these symptoms contact our hospital ASAP on 03 9888 5001 if it’s out of hours contact the 24 hour emergency centre CARE on 9417 6417
