25.01.2022 Great to finally have an Australian Made post that’s owned by an Australian (family) business.

24.01.2022 Ok- FROM THE GROUND UP soil health workshop at Kandanga Farm Store Oct 23, now has all speakers confirmed & locked in... 1. Colin Johnson (the relationship between minerals & microbes in soil). 2. John Moor (GrowMoor Biologicals) - cover crops and integrating animals into a system. 3. Dave Cohen - unintended consequences of synthetics in farming systems.... 4. Victoria Kane - the link between soil health and human health. Panel session and machinery demonstrations will follow. At the cafe a full lunch menu will follow...

23.01.2022 Microbes are everything and cycling organic matter is the fastest way to draw down carbon and improve soil. 80% of carbon sequestration is occurring in the thin layer of topsoil just under the surface (not what you can see above it). It turns out microbes are pretty fragile and without them, even with lots of organic matter, there isn’t any C cycling. So some of the best ways to kill microbes and sterilise soil for long periods are to use synthetics/chemicals, plough and ...hot burn. A lack of plant/root diversity (mono cultures) also stuffs the fungal-bacterial microbial balance. Although it may take a generation or two (in some non-brittle environments) to see this degradation, imbalances will be seen much more quickly (in the form of plant diseases like pasture dieback and smut/rust). At some stage you may want to start rebuilding your soil microbial colonies to reverse the damage that has taken place (primarily since WW2). For about $16/ha you can apply a stable balanced microbe brew (applied with micronised lime) and use the upcoming spring look at cover crops. Talk to us Kandanga Farm Store or see our upcoming spring newsletter about how to begin the regeneration process on your farm... https://www.bosrural.com.au/activfert-soil-life https://www.bosrural.com.au/summer-cover-crop-mix

22.01.2022 So sorry- due to unforeseen circumstances Kandanga Farm Store is closed today Friday October 2nd. We are however open both Saturday & Sunday (including our live music licensed Sunday Session this Sun at the cafe til 3pm). All rural supplies available as normal from 8am over the weekend (along with full breakfast & brunch menu at the Cafe). Alternatively we are open online 24/7 at www.bosrural.com.au... See you on the weekend and apologies once again!

22.01.2022 Great supporters and a fantastic platform for on-line stock sales. Love their work.

22.01.2022 Complementary businesses, Co-operation & CO-OPETITION Where we can we support & promote our customers’ businesses. The better the customer, the more we do. We reckon there’s enough money leeched away to city- based or overseas businesses in this industry, it’s time to take a stand!... Not only are we believers in de corporatisation and decentralisation; It’s just another way we can add value for our loyal customers, but ultimately grow a community to make regional business stronger. Perhaps that’s the true definition of Regenerative. Case in point: With such a movement away from synthetics & NPK type agronomy inputs and a focus on soil health instead from our shop customers; there was a recognised need for microbial & liquified micronised lime spreading in the area to regenerate soils; a need for yeomans ploughing and cover crop planting specialists. Meanwhile there are soil health gurus around with shiny green tractors and plenty of gear! Thanks Gilldora Grove contracting for having all the gear (and plenty of idea)- hope your new business goes well! Keep an eye out for posts on the progress of soil regeneration programs through Kandanga Farm Store . BTW- if you are a customer with a new business (or would like to support one); this Sunday 12-3 we are hosting Sunday Session markets with FREE STALLS available for complementary, local businesses especially those with Christmas gift ideas and locally made products. #SupportingOurCustomers #WhatGoesAroundComesAround #TowAndFert #SundaySessionMarkets

21.01.2022 Value adding is what turns $50B in Farm production into a $850B food & fibre industry (in Australia). Isn’t it worth investing a day to investigate what might be?

21.01.2022 We are always learning but from our experience, (possibly with the exception of the back yard plot- where I guess WE become the animal); we at Bos absolutely believe animals/livestock are integral in any nature-mimicking (Regenerative) food production system.

19.01.2022 Give your land a hand! Capitalise on the break in the season by rebuilding your soil naturally. Some of Australia’s best cover crop seed mixes and our famous coastal pasture mix are available RIGHT NOW! Microbes are key to bringing soil to life and naturally increasing fertility. ... Microbes in many soils are currently depleted / destroyed. Microbes in top soil are killed by synthetic fertiliser & chemical application; extended hot, dry conditions (especially without soil cover); burning & tillage. Depleted microbial levels leave plants susceptible to fungal pathogens (no good fungi to balance bad fungi such as those possibly responsible for pasture dieback.). Re-instating these populations using our methodology is simple and cheap. Our knowledge on microbial amendment programs that decrease long term synthetic fertiliser and expensive mineral product use is second to none. We can even help with hire equipment (yeomans plough available in store) and have contractors on file to make the whole process simple. Retain moisture and nutrients this summer and regenerate your dirt to living soil, getting you ready for the next dry season (that will come!) Talk to Nic about his soil regeneration plan NOW. Whether you have 10 acres or 10,000, we make it simple to see big changes- naturally! See Nic at Kandanga Farm Store today or call on 07 5484 3771 to get the ball rolling! More explanatory notes with these pics!

15.01.2022 Rain = Flies. Bos Bag online orders need to be placed next week for the best chance of delivery prior to Christmas/NY shut-down. Please place orders either online or with your local Elders or independent rural reseller NOW as high infestations of fly make physical contact treatments more difficult. https://www.bosrural.com.au/bos-bag-fly-control... Bos Bags allow cattle to self medicate with chemical free insecticide dust eliminating the need for mustering to apply chemicals. The DE powder supplied is <10 microns (not DE Fines!) that ensure maximum surface area to volume for physical contact action. No resistance issues, no WHP, NOT a repellant- an actual insecticide. Refillable (4kg Powder per refill). 1 Bos Bag per 50-60hd and a refill will last 50hd up to a month. (If using 12.5kg bags, approx cost 2c/HD/day). 13.01.2022 Weaning blues: A few weeks ago I shared a post from our K2 Organic Beef page showing how we (and many other people) do low-stress weaning. As usual people unaccustomed to the weaning rings said it was a waste of time (and one even said it was cruel- not too sure how they got that); but the ones who use the rings said yeah - what’s the big secret- no weaning stress is a no-brainer. To prove the point I randomly left a half a dozen calves not get the rings. I can tell by co...ndition and stress levels on mothers (and their un-ringed calves) which comments about weaning rings are true and which are not. Next week weight gain data will be shared to work out the financial cost of not using them, but this video shows the effect on mothers... https://www.bosrural.com.au/easy-wean-nose-rings-2-4 So after pulling the calves off last night, this morning

13.01.2022 Ever considered solar pumping but thought getting a quality pump was too expensive? We may have a solution... As we do with all products we sell at Bos, over the years we’ve trialed many solar pumping options and love the dual power pumps that have an internal inverter. These are unique. In other words, without expensive inverter boxes at the pump site, you can switch from a DC solar panel array to an AC generator or mains supply seamlessly.... Only two reputable pump brands offer this that we’ve found, and one (we also found) is very reluctant to honour warranties. So we now stick to Italian made Nastec pumps. Nastec also manufacture wet ends for some of the market leading Franklin brand pumps. We’ve also learnt to ask the hard questions about where pumps are actually manufactured- usually they are cheap for a reason. Italian pumps we’ve found to be very good and Nastec are well supported. The one we installed in this post delivers over 1l/sec to 100m head! (Helical rotor pump). It is a 4 submersible multi-power pump. https://www.bosrural.com.au/nastec-4hs-103-submersible-pump There are Solar Only options we also sell that are less expensive, and in many cases, being lower voltage, may be installed in most states by a competent person (not an electrician) which is handy for very remote applications where electricians don’t get to! We are working through developing a range of installation videos where, regardless of the job, you can do all the other steps (that don’t legally require a registered electrician) yourself in selecting and installing your array and pump. The particular pumps on the website are examples only and we can customise a kit for your application quite simply if we know.... 1. Water output required. 2. Head (Output/reservoir height less Standing water height). 3. Existing pipeline details (type, length & diameter). Also- is the pump going down a borehole or in a dam/pond/creek/tank? (What’s the depth?) You will also need to think about the power supply you want to use (solar or AC) and the distance from power source to the pump itself). It’s not really rocket science and by choosing the right pump and knowing the rules, the long term economics and labour saving benefits, maintenance advantages & general peace of mind of solar pumping are unmatched in most scenarios. #Nastec #Solarpump

12.01.2022 ABC Landline producers found us a couple of years back after running some stories where our #bosbags were being used on the properties they were featuring (for buffalo fly). It’s been a long time coming but their team came yesterday to Kandanga Farm Store to talk about (amongst other stuff) a Rural Supply Store model without reliance on synthetics & chemicals; organic farming in an area that’s impossible to run livestock organically; and a cafe that links it all together. S...pent a lot of time talking about the value of weeds in a regenerative system, using animals, insects (like dung beetles) & microbes instead of synthetic fertilisers and how the cyclical input industry works. It doesn’t air until next year, but hopefully it’ll be a different slant on what we do and might shift some paradigms. Covered so many topics it’ll be interesting to see how they approach it. They’ve definitely got to the bottom of us! Today they are filming at some local customers’ places around the Mary Valley talking about our circular economy & community integration (an all-too-often overlooked aspect of true regenerative practices). It’ll be interesting to see how that turns out and thanks to the locals who agreed to be interviewed on the spot! 12.01.2022 Getting fly? Check this out: Bos Bag video & testimonial from Charters Towers, Qld. We have been using the BOS bags since June 2020. We noticed a marked improvement in our cattle’s calmness and contentment within a few days of placing them with the herd. The cattle were no longer bunched together and instead, were spread out and happily grazing without the distraction of the flies. We have built our own portable, adjustable stands in order to move the bags about easily b...etween mobs. We love that the cattle voluntarily use the bags to help with fly control and there is no need to muster or move cattle to treat them with chemicals. I have attached photos of the mob of steers we visited today. The bag had been emptied by the cattle a few days previously and within a minute of us refilling the bag, they were lined up to get underneath it and dust themselves. Warrawee Stn. #BosBags are now available at most Elders & many independent rural resellers through Northern Australia. Also Nutrien Wandoan & Mitchell and many independent rural stores like Acres Rural & Booth Pastoral. Failing all that buy online and support regional business - https://www.bosrural.com.au/chemical-free-fly-control-bos-b

09.01.2022 A great speaker (and world leader) on animal handling.

09.01.2022 FROM THE GROUND UP- our long awaited soil health workshop is locked in for Friday, October 23 from 10am at the Kandanga Farm Store . The workshop will be free with a great lineup of speakers and even some machinery demonstrations. The New York Times quoted on Aug 9 that soil is being lost between 10 and 100 times faster than it is forming. Perhaps it’s time to reverse the trend?... If your property is drying out faster than it used to, if your farm input bills are increasing (both soil nutrition and animal nutrition), if you have questions about the links between soil health and human health or if recent Regen Ag chatter (from docos like Kiss the Ground) has provided more questions than answers; perhaps this will help. Pencil in the date NOW and more information will follow... Feel free to share if required.

09.01.2022 This was a review we did of our experience over the past 4-5 years trialling non-chemical and certified organic herbicide options. Weed Zap currently has its Organic Certificate suspended (not because it has suddenly changed ingredients- but because of a labelling issue - Herbicide Vs Botanical Oil). Apart from that though, it’s pretty up to date. If you have further questions, come and see us Kandanga Farm Store or check out https://www.bosrural.com.au/chemical-free-wee...d-control Remember weeds have a role to play in mining minerals. Biodiversity is not only essential in any natural system but is also essential in fulfilling dietary requirements of herbivores.

07.01.2022 Bos has been planning for this for nearly 5 years trialling alternates both on farm (for the certified options) and as part of independent trials for others. As the first rural store in the country to go down this path it’s been far from popular (at times) particularly with councils- but the reality is, consumers will drive this change as it doesn’t make sense to grow food (or maintain public assets - and waterways) with poison. There are no direct alternatives to Glyphosate so to get a good result takes knowledge and experience. 06.01.2022 Cover Crop Seed sold by Bos Rural is all uncoated. We don’t sell clay! Bare soil means extremes of temperature and moisture loss due to no shading or leaf transpiration. What’s happening above the ground is reflected (4-fold) beneath it and no roots means no organic matter and a decreasing soil carbon percentage. Cover crops are critical in anyone’s system! So seasonally we develop seed blends guided by some of the country’s foremost experts on regenerative Ag. ... If have your own preferences, we have scoop boxes of many individual seed options to make your own mix. No planter? Faecal seeding is something we’ve spent years at Bos perfecting. Livestock feed rations for that make manure more of a potting mix holding moisture and microbes collected through the animal’s digestive tract is the key to successful faecal seeding. We can give advice also on the best seed to use for faecal seeding and how to ensure paddock distribution into those hard to reach areas. If you have bare or weedy areas that need covering NOW - we have seed in store. If you are planning for spring/summer planting, we are currently taking pre-orders for hard to get uncoated seed products. Organic producers talk to us about supplying necessary paperwork for a derogation (if required).

02.01.2022 Love this beautiful film with Walter Jehne!! Thanks to Stephen Curtain for bringing this to life!! This latest film project 'Fire vs Fungi: our choice to natura...lly cool the planet and in time' (14 min 30 sec) tells an overwhelmingly important, interconnected and inspiring story that uproots the narrative of 'doom and gloom' and replants it with an empowering 'yes, we can regenerate earth's bio-systems to cool the planet. It starts with cultivating more of the tiny superheroes literally underneath our feet to rebuild what's known as the Earth's natural carbon sponge. Wild fire incidence can be reduced, landscapes can be restored and rehydrated, vast tracts of Earth's arid lands can be regenerated. As we walk with climate scientist and soil micro-biologist Walter Jehne and outdoor educator Katja Hesse in the Rainforest Gully at the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra, the conclusion is clear: 'We can naturally and safely cool this planet within years. Everywhere. We've got a planet to save. 'Heartfelt thanks to Walter Jehne, Katja Hesse, Peter Leppert, Acacia Rose and Pete Cocker and gratitude to the Australian National Botanic Gardens for their innovative foresight in conceiving this rainforest. Park your car at Kann Park (Kandanga Creek Rd, a few hundred meters in from Mary Valley Rd turn off) and walk in through double gates near sign written shipping container Kandanga Farm Store (paddocks near road being planted). There may even be an Olssen or two on han...d if you have any questions. Nothing formal- not a field day but you are welcome to take a look. Paddocks were crash grazed last two days and had already been mulch mowed, sprayed with microbe mix and Yeomans ploughed at 10-20m contours. https://www.bosrural.com.au/summer-cover-crop-mix
