24.01.2022 Some days you have to know your limits. Getting any closer to this old girl is one of them. Camera was on zoom and she was lining me up. Take no chances.

24.01.2022 We haven't posted an update for many months. The continuing drought has been keeping us very busy. One of our properties has been in the family for 3 generations, over 120 yrs and we will have no stock water by the end of year. Feed has been a scarce commodity in previous droughts but never water. It's the first time that the dams built over 50 yrs ago will be dry. Recent bore drilling in an attempt to find underground water has been unsuccessful with only one more test site ...to explore on Monday. We have our fingers and toes crossed for a good day. If we don't find any water on Monday it means potentially having a couple hundred head of cattle without water and having to buy water and ultimately further destocking within weeks. The heat, wind and dust has at times has been near unbearable. The turtles have been exiting the water and not making it very far, the poor things. The cattle are holding up well despite the dry conditions, which is a credit to them and the Brahman breed. Some first time heifers calved last year, carried their calves through the tough conditions; weaned them and now have new calves on the ground. One heifer calved 30/12/18 and calved again early November with her sisters calving along similar dates. Weaned calves had great condition and speaks volumes for the heifers doability and fertility. A recent inland trip through New South Wales and Queensland was heart wrenching to see first hand the strangle hold this drought has. Words can't possibly describe the landscape. With properties not having had any rain for 7 years. It's a sad time for many rural households throughout Australia with ongoing effects of drought and recent bushfires.

23.01.2022 A rather exciting week just gone, apart from having some nice rain. A very nice young bull calf hit the ground from CHEROKEE L A REPUCHO DE MAN 77/. DOB 06/06/1962. This young bull calf is the product from our AI program last year where we used pellets rather than straws. Extremely happy to have a bull and the only successful insemination that we achieved from Repucho. Dam is a stand out cow with plenty of leg and length.

17.01.2022 Wondering why I'd post a picture of this cow. She's plain, certainly not the prettiest and she's moderate to light framed. The sort of cow you'd easily overlook and possibly cull. From a productivity standard this cow pays for herself. Given her size her carrying cost is cheaper. Costs less to feed her in grass consumption, considering most of her life has been living through constant dry seasons it's a critical factor. She's from our 2015 breeding year and has some pretty so...und calving history. She calved at 30 months 1st calf on the ground 27/11/17, 2nd calf 6/10/18, third calf 5/10/19 and PTIC 4 months so due mid October. Young coastal bred cow has seen more drought than rain yet still pumps the calves out. Can't say I've ever seen her fat, she gives it all to her calves. Maybe I shouldn't have sold her along with a line of other cows. See more

15.01.2022 The recent deluge in North Queensland decimated the area. It was the single greatest loss of cattle in Australia's history with upwards of 500,000 head lost. This was a disastrous event where people lost kilometres of fencing, infrastructure, machinery and vast numbers of livestock. When we heard about how peoples lives were affected we decided that there comes a time in life when we need to offer a helping hand rather than just send our thoughts and good wishes. We wanted to... reach out to a family that was impacted by the flood and who lost most of their cattle and subsequently their capacity to produce income. Today 50 grey stud heifers left our property on loan to Ray and Janice Fleming of Nosilla Brahmans, Broadlands Station, McKinlay. Ray and Janice have been breeding grey Brahmans for 45 years. Their stud, Nosilla Brahmans has been registered for 20 years. We hope the progeny from these 50 heifers will go a long way in rebuilding their herd. There are many people and organizations that helped us to bring this to fruition. We would like to extend a huge thanks to Robert Murray from Elders for the introduction to Ray and Janice and for his significant contribution and time. Our sincere thanks to the team from our local rural supplier, Tom Grady Rural Merchandise who coordinated donations. Thank you to Trevor Wilcox, Territory Manager South Queensland for the DATAMARS visual ear tags and applicator (the spring-loaded applicator worked a treat), and to Pat O'Neill, Senior Sales Representative from Zoetis for their contribution in supplying Dectomax as part of our tick clearance program. Additional thanks to the Australian Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) for their support and CQLX for the cattle handling at Gracemere. This was a big job and one that we couldn't have achieved without the support and generosity of all those involved. Thank you.

13.01.2022 Wishing everyone a happy New Year and we hope that the year ahead is happy and prosperous one for everyone.

11.01.2022 A beautiful morning watching the cows come in through some light fog. For those celebrating Easter wishing everyone a lovely and safe time.

05.01.2022 It's sensational to see some much needed rain falling out West in Queensland. It's been a wet 2019, with many experiencing devastating losses with too much rain. Last week Channel 9 aired a story which particularly annoyed me to the extent I emailed them my thoughts. I've posted it below: Dear channel 9 newsroom,...Continue reading

04.01.2022 Hello to all our followers, there are times when our cattle surprise me. Fertility is a top priority. During early January we weaned heavily to support the cows in an attempt to hold their condition having had no rain and scarce feed. By mid / late January our season changed with terrific grass growing rain. In February we preg tested a large mob of cows as I was looking for recips for planned embryo transfer work. Feeling quite assured I'd have a large number of empty cows for the planned program. Bulls had been out for 6 weeks and calves weaned month prior. Certainly an amazing result, not quite the one I was expecting with 75% of cows preg testing in calf 2 to 4 months. One after the other in calf. Great females doing it tough but doing us proud. Few before and after pics.

03.01.2022 Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas for those celebrating the festive season. Here at BOS we are praying for long overdue rain which is badly needed. Picture of a bull calf showing plenty of promise and a red sale bull left the other day, thank goodness he was quiet wasn't exactly how I thought he'd be transported.
