24.01.2022 To be able to fight fire, we must first understand fire and that is where Thomas Duff, Senior Research Scientist at CFA comes in. Victoria’s landscape is compl...ex, and we need scientists like Thomas to better understand what drives all types of fires, how they move and what resources we need to fight them. This information is then used to help our firefighters and protect them during our fire seasons. His role involves using a lot of science, from looking at how climate change and weather affects fire conditions to research and experiments done right here in Victoria. Thomas explains why he loves his job for #ScienceWeek.
23.01.2022 Today CFA brigades were called to a number of out-of-control burn-offs If you're using the great weather to clean-up your property for fire season, make sure ...you conduct your burn-off safely. A burn-off, if not extinguished properly can re-ignite days after the original burn. Keep your burn-off safe and legal: Check fire restrictions with your local council and register your burn on 1800 668 511 Check and monitor weather conditions particularly wind To avoid unnecessary calls to emergency services, notify your neighbours beforehand Leave a three metre fire break, free from flammable materials around the burn Have sufficient equipment and water to stop the fire spreading Never leave a burn-off unattended stay for its entire duration If your burn-off gets out of control, call ‘000’ immediately
23.01.2022 A record 51 aircraft will hit Victorian skies to help fight fires and keep communities safe this summer season. The 2020-21 aircraft fleet includes a mix of w...ater bombing aircraft, air supervision and air intelligence-gathering aircraft. Two Large Air Tankers, which can carry up to 15,000 litres of water, foam or retardant, and two 7500-litre Aircranes, will contribute to the 51 aircraft in the core-fleet and provide essential support to other aircraft across the state.
22.01.2022 We are Victoria Police. Four of us didn't make it home. But we're here to make sure you do.
21.01.2022 Tuesday and Wednesday's storm setups are probably the best I've seen for this season so far in Victoria. Models are indicating that severe storms will be a risk... across western Victoria on Tuesday afternoon and evening as a pre-frontal trough approaches western Victoria. An unstable cold front will move over Victoria on Wednesday with the risk of severe thunderstorms again. These storms are then expected to cross the remainder of the state on Wednesday and into Thursday. Damaging winds and heavy rainfall may occur with these storms. Stay tuned to the page for the latest! - Nick -
19.01.2022 Spring is here and it’s a fantastic time to clean up and clear out unnecessary things that we accumulate over the year. Whether it be inside or outside the home..., clutter, household rubbish, broken toys and appliances, overgrown branches and lawns. Get the family together whilst we are all in lockdown and spruce up your homes ready for the upcoming summer season. Check out the CFA website for some great fire safe landscaping ideas. https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/landscaping
16.01.2022 Camperdown house completely destroyed. An unattended fry pan left on is said to be the cause of the fire at the home on Curdie Street. An elderly woman who... was occupying the home was fortunate to escape uninjured. Brigades from Camperdown and Bostocks were able to control the blaze after 10 minutes but the roof collapsing made it impossible to save the structure. SES worked throughout the day to secure the building. REMEMBER, KEEP LOOKING WHEN YOU’RE COOKING Photo credit Mixx1063
15.01.2022 Its been quite a busy day for our brigade, which all started off at 3am this morning. We were paged to support Beeac for the unfortunate house fire which claim...ed an elderly mans life. Both our Pumper and Pumper Tanker responded, with our Pumper remaining on scene until 5:30pm this evening. You may have seen a strange looking truck getting around town throughout the day. Fire Rescue Victoria Pumper 64 from Belmont was in town, supporting our community. This was while our Pumper remained at Beeac, which was manned by members from Torquay Fire Brigade, to allow our members to rest and remain in our local area. Pumper 64 was put in to action this afternoon when the brigade was paged to a Motor Vehicle Accident. Upon Colac FCV and Pumper 64's arrival on scene, it was discovered a vehicle had ended up down the embankment, parallel to Queens Avenue. No one was trapped and a single occupant of the vehicle was walked to a nearby ambulance and transported to hospital. Members then assisted this evening to restow and clean our Pumper, once it arrived back in station. Great effort by all involved! 10.01.2022 CFA was humbled to receive millions of dollars in donations over the 2019/20 fire season. 09.01.2022 National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to say a very BIG THANK YOU to all volunteers who give their time to helping their communities when we need them most.... The 2019/20 fire season brought incredible challenges, which we couldn’t have faced without the critical role of CFA volunteers. CFA volunteers are our friends and family and take on many roles to fulfil our mission of protecting life and property. Thank you, not only this week but the 365 days of the year you are there for each and every one of us!
04.01.2022 The Royal Australian Mint has today launched a commemorative coloured $2 coin to honour those who battled the horrific 2019/20 summer bushfires. The $2 coin wil...l feature a blaze of orange in the centre, with female and male fireys either side of it, looking ready for action. The Royal Australian Mint created the $2 coin to recognise the determination and commitment of our firefighting communities across Australia in battling the terrible conditions that confronted them. The Mint also announced $125,000 of the proceeds from the sale of the coins will go to fire and emergency service organisations across the country, including CFA. CFA’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Catherine Greaves said CFA is extremely grateful to the Mint for recognising the incredibly important work our members do in protecting lives and property. This coin will reach communities across the country and will highlight the risk our members take each and every day to keep Victorian communities safe, CEO Greaves said. CFA Acting Chief Officer Garry Cook said the Mint’s generous monetary contribution will go towards purchasing and maintaining brigade firefighting equipment. We are always very grateful for any financial contributions made to CFA it allows us to boost our critical firefighting equipment which further increases our ability to protect our community, CO Cook said. The new $2 coin has been made available to the banks for circulation across Australia. A version of the coin will be made available in a packaging card for coin collectors. The Mint will also be hosting a small exhibition over the summer months in Canberra to honour Australian firefighters. There will be a collection of notable objects on display, including these commemorative $2 coins, as well as a number of other medals and coins made by the Mint over the years to honour firefighters. CFA is encouraging its members and the community to try and purchase one of these commemorative firefighter coins as a special memento to hold onto. The timing of the release of the coin is a great reminder to those living in bushfire prone areas to prepare themselves and their properties for the upcoming fire season.
03.01.2022 Check out this innovative way of sowing seeds that’s giving Lake Cobrico a new lease of life. Drones have showered 32 kilos of native seeds over the wildlife s...wamp reserve to create a vast amount of new plants, trees and shrubs. It’s part of a Forest Fire Management Victoria program of fire recovery works following the St Patrick’s Day fires two years ago. The Heytesbury District Landcare Network supported the aerial seeding project and will monitor the results with drone surveys.
02.01.2022 Great work tonight by about 70 members of CFA, SES, Police, Ambulance Victoria, Hems4 and Hems3 to assist 5 road accident victims from their vehicles into await...ing ambulances and helicopters. A long cold night for volunteers and hopefully a speedy recovery for all occupants. Remember that all not all other vehicles on the roads are local and familiar with our roads.
01.01.2022 In recent months we have seen an increase in house fires in CFA areas and sadly across the state, six lives have been lost. CFA and Fire Rescue Victoria are asking all Victorians to know their risks and be prepared when it comes to fire safety around the home.
