24.01.2022 They like their swings
22.01.2022 The DVL gene is very common in Bostons, it does not always cause problems by any means, some dogs do exhibit symptoms that suggest it is the at the root of problems they have, ranging from mild to severe, symptoms seldom seen in crosses, possibly because they seldom have two copies of the DVL2 gene
21.01.2022 An extreme case of breeding in a screw tailed breed, the genes that cause the screw tails are linked to the problems further up the spine, we have looked for tails less fixed, less screwed in our dogs since we started breeding many years ago, it does help eliminate hemi vertebrae. Tails are slowly getting longer and less twisted in our Bostons . They once were allowed long tails they still should be
21.01.2022 Meet Meep, he’s stayed with us because he’s a midget, at four months of age he’s about the size of many pups half his age, he makes up for a lack of size with attitude!
18.01.2022 If you’ve never had an anxious or fearful dog, today’s writing does not apply to you. This is about my belief that clear and fair corrections make dogs more con...fident, a continuation from yesterday. Pet dog training and training dog for an instinct sport have found a big split in training. I believe pet dog owners need to see us working dog people train our dogs. They need to see how clear we are, how black and white we are, and that we don’t allow our dogs to flounder. We’d give a simple command and ensure they do it, like sit. As I watch sheep-dog trainers, I don’t see anxious or reactive dogs. I go to an agility trial and see many of these same bloodlines as fearful messes, with their kind people rewarding all that they do right. The dogs believe the sky is about to fall on their heads, and rather than a lifeline or understanding, they get a cookie popped into their mouths. Food is not the right answer for feeling unsafe. Rupert knows about becoming brave with corrections. He was not a confident dog; its what made him so delightful. He’s cautious around new people. After his award winning rabbit chasing moment, he got conditioned with an Ecollar. Rupert now can be off leash anywhere, with or without his collar. It was about a week after his Ecollar first got strapped on that a friend of mine came over. He’s a giant compared to me. Not only does he have substantial size, but also presence. As we were chatting about something, he commented to Rupert, Aren’t you an asshole. It was shockingly harsh for perfect Rupert, but I didn’t quite understand why his comment felt so off. It wasn’t until the next day that I realized Rupert jumped on him. Scared little Rupert molested him in fact. He had barely sniffed a stranger before, but on this day he leapt on this guy. How odd. And excellent! I love it when a shy dog finds their moxy. Time continued, and shortly thereafter he got his Rudepert name. The shy little mouse has gone to sleep, being replaced by Rudepert. Today he went up and nicely greeted two other strangers. He’s gotten quite friendly with the world, so much so that I forget that he avoided people for so long. This all changed when he learned he must listen, even when he didn’t want to. Yesterday I was at the vets. Everyone must now wait outside, and a gregarious German shepherd scared a puppy. This puppy had been quite confident until this moment. The woman transformed from a confident handler to an annoying whiny cheerleader. As she did this, her dog fell apart and was at the end of its leash trying to bolt away. She made the issue way worse. She showed no clarity or strength. When we only have rewards to help us, we get all weak and weird trying to help our dogs through these situations. If I’d of had the puppy at the vets I’d of handled things differently. First GSD wouldn’t have gotten anywhere near my puppy. However, if she had, I would have bent down and gotten my puppy to stand still. I’d of helped them get it right, feeding as I coached, but also insisting as strongly as needed. If that did not work and they panicked, I would have instantly stopped the panic. That’s no fun for a dog. I would have scolded them for pulling on a leash. That’s a clear line in the sand, something concrete that they can change. It’s a breath of fresh air. Puppy would have learned that he didn’t have to worry about anything except making me unhappy if he pulled on the leash. I am the only thing you need to worry about. It’s that simple. I consider it a gift I can give to a dog, that I can snap them out of a panic by scolding them for something else. Fears spread fast in a dog’s mind. Rather than allow hundreds of possibilities, I create one. The only thing they need to worry about is how unpleasant I am if I’m unhappy. The way to make me unhappy is pulling on your leash. What a relief it must be for dogs knowing that I’m clear, stable and fair, and only one thing makes me unhappy. The only way they can do that is by yanking the leash. That’s the only worry they need to have and it’s fully under their control. Rupert got the same with rabbits. When he learned he had to come back, all of his recalls improved. He was faster and happier, joyous in fact , wether his collar was on or not. He loved not having a choice. I don’t have many rules. I have shockingly few. Don’t pull on a leash. Don’t bite me for toe nails. Come when you are called. And for all except Rupert, Down. That’s it. These are my only enforced rules. Rupert and Pippa both we’re destined to be anxious messes. Neither are. By having these black and white rules, I have happy, confident dogs who know their place in the world. Except Pippa. She thinks she runs a dog school, and she might be right. 18.01.2022 A good site to check out before buying a puppy you cannot meet
17.01.2022 It was on the news this morning that so far this year people looking to buy a puppy have been scammed out of $1.3 million dollars! The biggest hit was last mont...h, scammers are even stealing real breeders details but giving their banks number for money to go in, you can check a banks whereabouts by the BSB I’d suggest you do that, and check the breeders other details too. Take care ! See more

08.01.2022 As I write this a puppy is fighting for his life, this would happen over the weekend of course, so not only has he suffered but it will be costing his owners a bomb for sure, all because a know it all vet told them he did not need his third vaccination for a further two weeks AFTER they were already days later that the date of his next due shot as it was marked on his vet card, that was safe, we do pups only three weeks apart out here because our town is a hotspot for Parvo..., three shots, three weeks apart is the recommended protocol for full protection, this comes directly from the vaccine manufacturers. Our vet has been doing this for a good many years after a particularly nasty type of Parvo hit town years ago, fully vaccinated breeds known to have low immune systems were getting it, even the adults, pups half way through their courses were getting it too, she contacted the manufacturer and was advised to do pups at three weeks, nine weeks and twelve weeks, that stopped it. We have stuck to that regime ever since and never do our pups come down with Parvo. If a puppies next shot is due on the day I’m to travel, I don’t get it as it’s not good practice to vaccinate a puppy about to be stressed by transportation, however you have a safe period of a week in which to get him home, let him settle, then get it done. Pups are safe for four weeks after their last shot. What this vet did meant that the pup was going to go for six weeks between shots, ..... he has Parvo. Please do as we suggest and follow our advise, our vets out here are not hillbillies that know nothing, they are highly skilled knowledgeable people who deal with situations and conditions most City vets don’t even attempt, there are no specialists just round the corner here, and I’ve seen our vets do amazing work. Respect what they advise please, if your chosen vet will not, get another vet, this pups life should never have been put at risk, his owners did the right thing and took him in to be vaccinated within a safe period and were given very wrong advise.

06.01.2022 Preparing for a puppy arrival Some things to do whilst awaiting that big event. Google harmful plants, you may be surprised at what you may find, almost all gardens have harmful plants in them, and many plants frequently found in pots are also harmful to dogs, some can be deadly.... Check fences very well, if a little head can fit through a hole, the pup can. Check power points and cords, fridge cords and such, out of sight but maybe not out of puppy reach ? Think about a safe puppy place for when you are not home, a fairly roomy crate or area that can be safely cordoned off.
