25.01.2022 This week on Talking Plants, Tim introduces us to the beautiful Montezuma's Pine (Pinus montezumae), which grows in the areas once occupied by Aztecs (central and southern Mexico) as well as a little further south into Guatemala. Uncommon in cultivation, there's a nearly 50-year-old specimen growing in Melbourne Gardens, though it's possibly a hybrid. https://bit.ly/34xYu0K

25.01.2022 Up, up and away! The Lake View Rest House at Melbourne Gardens is on the move. Thanks to the generous support of a donor, the Rest House is currently being restored and moved to a new location along the Northern Border of Melbourne Gardens, which will reinstate views of Ornamental Lake across to Picnic Point, Fountain Island and the William Tell Rest House. Originally constructed in 1920, the Lake View Rest House is among Victoria's oldest Pavilions, and we can't wait for you to be able to sit inside and admire stunning vistas from its new location.

24.01.2022 Next time you visit the Herb Garden at Melbourne Gardens, have a go at telling the time using the sun! A bronze armillary sphere sundial sits at the heart of the Herb Garden, with armillary referring to bracelet or ring. As described on the plaque, the two rings represent the equator and the north-south meridian of the earth. A central rod known as the gnomon represents the Earth’s axis. The shadow it casts on the equatorial ring tells you the time. This beautiful sundial was sculpted by Studio Massee and installed in 1987, with the kind assistance of The Herb Society of Victoria and an anonymous benefactor. Find out more about the aromatic Herb Garden and pick up tips for looking after your herbs at home here https://bit.ly/3lv8KMH.

23.01.2022 Treetop shot of the legendary Arboriculture team at the Gardens. Manager Arboriculture Charlie Carrol and Arborists Jim Shugg and Peter Berbee keep the precious old trees of Melbourne Gardens in incredible shape year-round. Thank you team!

21.01.2022 Happy #worldpoetryday! Celebrate by booking your spot in our free Tree Songs: Poetry Workshop taking place at Melbourne Gardens next Saturday as part of Garden Gathering Vol. 1. Acclaimed Wiradjuri writer, poet and academic Jeanine Leane will lead you through a workshop creating poetry inspired by the glorious trees and picturesque landscape of Eucalypt Lawn in Melbourne Gardens. https://bit.ly/3raqFe2

21.01.2022 This week on Talking Plants, Tim discusses two tricky-to-distinguish species from Africa, the Hard-leaved Monkey Plum (Diospyros scabrida var. cordata), and Bladdernut (Diospyros whyteana). Similar in leaf, they're easier to separate in flower or fruit. http://bit.ly/35vZan7

21.01.2022 Out, damned spot! Settle in for a night of murder and mayhem at the Gardens, positioned at the very heart of the action. Revel in the warm summer weather as the backdrop of Melbourne Gardens inspires an interplay of shadows that conjures the play’s supernatural tones and evoke the earthy environment of this psychological thriller. Bear silent witness to the unravelling doom of a couple who kill together and die apart as you watch Australian Shakespeare Company's visceral rendition of Macbeth, Shakespeare’s darkest and most streamlined tragedy. https://bit.ly/39odj75

20.01.2022 The Metallic Sun-orchid (Thelymitra epipactoides) was once widespread across Victoria, South Australia and into New South Wales. The species is now endangered nationally, largely through habitat degradation and loss. Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria's Orchid Conservation Program is helping prevent the extinction of this species by growing and establishing this species from seed for future conservation and introduction with project partners. These pictures are of plants grown from seed which are now flowering in our orchid conservation shadehouse at Cranbourne Gardens.

20.01.2022 This week on Talking Plants, Tim introduces us to an unusual anise with a seaside aroma! This pretty, seaweed-perfumed plant is either Illicium mexicana or Illicium floridanum, and was encountered by Tim on a visit to an Arboretum in Hoddles Creek. https://bit.ly/3lFQrEQ

20.01.2022 What an achievement! Tom May, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria's Principal Research Scientist (Mycology), has been listed as one of Australia's 30 leading researchers in the life sciences. 19.01.2022 Gorgeous shot of Terry Smyth at the new Sensory Garden at Melbourne Gardens. When working on the Garden with the team, Terry tried to choose plants that would not only stimulate senses of sight, smell, sound and touch but that would also evoke memories for people. A sensory garden is about the connections between you and nature, and between you and your friends and family or people you admire, she says. This is a place for feeling peaceful, a place for noticing flowers and sounds and dragonflies. http://bit.ly/38aAgLB : The Sydney Morning Herald

19.01.2022 To quote Manager Environmental Systems, Ricardo Simao, who captured this amazing shot at Cranbourne Gardens, 'When your feet hang over your ears, it's probably time to move out'.

15.01.2022 It's mid-spring, and flowers are blooming, the days are brighter, and the Gardens are open! Staff worked round the clock to prepare for re-opening, so those of us able to visit the Gardens can enjoy spring's splendid blooms and sunny skies. While it was a challenge during closure to ensure precious Living Collections were kept healthy with many horticultural staff working from home, the teams on site did a remarkable job with the help of tools provided by our partner STIHL. Take a behind the scenes look at the work that went on while the Gardens were closed here https://bit.ly/3kPZbb1 : The Age

12.01.2022 This week’s Flowering Friday is the charming Trachymene composita, also known as Parsnip Trachymene. Trachymene composita occurs naturally in New South Wales, Tasmania, and Victoria, and its fibrous taproot was used as a traditional food source by First Nations people. You can grow this beauty easily from seed it may rapidly grow to over two metres tall. It boasts ornate red and green leaves that contrast beautifully with its white flowers, and make it an ideal choice for a herbaceous border or display plant. Find Trachymene composita growing in the Stringybark Garden and the How-To Garden at Cranbourne Gardens.

12.01.2022 "Variegation is sort of mysterious. Losing pigment in a leaf means a plant can’t use those cells for photosynthesis. So why would a plant variegate? There’s a theory that because insects generally have bad vision, when a plant variegates it looks like it’s already been eaten so the insect leaves it alone." What's your favourite variegated species?

12.01.2022 A stunning shot worthy of sharing for #nationalbirdweek. This bright beauty is a Gouldian finch (Chloebia gouldiae), an Australian native species patchily distributed in tropical northern sub-coastal areas. Endangered, the facial colour of most Gouldian finches is usually black, with red-faced forms making up about 25% of the population, and rare, yellow-faced birds occurring from time to time.

11.01.2022 This week’s Flowering Friday is the vibrant, sun-coloured Bulbine bulbosa, also referred to as Bulbine Lily. Bulbine bulbosa boasts widespread natural occurrences down the east coast mainland states of Australia and in Tasmania, and this pretty tufted perennial that can reach a height of around a metre, though tends to be shorter. Bulbine bulbosa can tolerate a range of soils and requires regular watering through the hotter months. Find this bright beauty flowering in the Forest Garden at Cranbourne Gardens.

11.01.2022 Making up 17% of Australia's threatened flora, roughly 190 of our 1,800 native orchid species are nationally endangered, and some of the most vulnerable of these are found in Victoria. Take a look at some of the areas across Victoria that our #OrchidConservation team are working in to save our most threatened orchids from extinction below, and donate to support their vital work here https://bit.ly/3qikIff.

10.01.2022 It’s like having a nail shoved into your flesh". Scientists have found a potent chemical that might give Australian giant stinging trees their extraordinarily painful punch. The trees, which can grow taller than 100 feet, are found throughout the rain forests of eastern Australia, where they are known to torment hikers.

06.01.2022 Keeping the lawns at Melbourne Garden lush, green and picnic-ready is no easy feat, especially as the weather gets warmer and the days get sunnier! To help maintain the lawns, we're trialling a new friend, the iMOW robotic mower, courtesy of our partner STIHL. The iMOW mows automatically at night, minimising noise disruption for visitors during the day, and boasts a special feature which shreds grass clippings finely during the mowing process, allowing them to fall back onto the lawn and act as an effective natural fertiliser. As a leading organisation, the Gardens like to trial the latest and greatest technology to support the work of staff by freeing up time for the team to focus on other curatorial projects. So far, the lawns are happy and so are we!
