11.01.2022 Hands up if you're guilty of using your phone or laptop (or both!) in bed at night? It's definitely an easy habit to fall into, but it can wreak havoc on our sleep - and our daytime energy, too. My blog post looks at some of the reasons why our screen-time habits can affect our sleep and how we can reduce the impact of blue light on our health (without having to throw all our technology in the river and become Luddites). https://botanikal.com.au//why-blue-light-is-ruining-your-s

08.01.2022 Anxiety is complicated. There's no one cause of anxiety, and often there are many different factors contributing at the same time. Whilst symptomatic treatments in the short term are important, identifying and addressing the factors underlying your anxiety is an important part of approaching anxiety from a holistic perspective. Anxiety typically needs an integrative approach, where herbal and nutritional medicine are combined with diet, lifestyle and psychological/ emotional ...support to help you manage anxiety in the long term. . . Anxiety is something I am really passionate about helping people with. If you're interested in a holistic approach to anxiety, I'd love to work with you. 05.01.2022 Is sleep a struggle for you? You might want to try adjusting your sleep hygiene! On my latest blog post I talk all things sleep hygiene (including what on earth "sleep hygiene" even is) and how a few simple lifestyle changes can make a huge difference to your sleep (and your overall health!) Check it out here: https://botanikal.com.au//sleep-hygiene-what-is-it-and-how

03.01.2022 There are so many considerations to factor in when it comes to diet/ eating patterns not just how healthy or unhealthy it is! I see so much hype on social media about particular diets and whether they are good or not based solely on the healthiness of the foods in the diet. Healthy eating is important, but here’s the thing: food is so much more than just its health benefits (and that’s coming from a total health nerd!). Food is also how we connect with family and frie...nds, how we celebrate occasions and how we honour ourselves, too. Factors influencing food choices can include (in no particular order): - Healthiness of foods - Ethical or moral impact of foods - Environmental impact of foods (including actual food production as well as the packaging required to transport and store foods) - Cultural values and norms - Societal values and norms - Accessibility and availability of foods in local area - Taste preferences - Sensory issues and texture aversions - Allergies and food intolerances - Cooking or food preparation skill level - Time available for food preparation - Food requirements due to medical condition/s - Physical abilities - Specific requirements of other family/ household members That’s a lot to consider of course there’s no one eating pattern to suit everyone! While aiming to eat a healthy diet is an important goal to have, the optimal, healthy diet for each individual is as unique as that person. It’s just way too reductionist to reduce entire eating patterns down to good or bad, and doing this dismisses the real, lived experiences of people. What’s important is being able to make healthy food choices within the context of your life and your needs, rather than trying to emulate the diets of others who have different needs to you. That said, if you do have concerns about your current eating pattern, or you’re unsure if it is the best way for you to be eating, seeing a professional for a one-on-one consultation is ideal. A qualified healthcare professional should be able to help you navigate all the BS to find an eating pattern that not only nourishes you, but fits with your ethics, budget, culture and individual needs.
