17.01.2022 It’s great to be working with Steel City Strings in the role of Manager. I take my hat off to Yve Repin OAM who has created some very big shoes to fill during her excellent leadership. It’s great to be able to still have Yve in the organisation to help me adjust to this role. I’m looking forward to facilitating concert promotions and being part of the team at a time where my performance work is limited. #SteelCityStrings #ArtsAdministration

12.01.2022 SOLOIST INTERVIEW | Jeremy Boulton (Operatic Baritone, Maurice Ravel ‘Don Quichotte à Dulcinée’ song cycle - 2020 Digital Season) What has been your favourite t...hing about the 2020 Digital Season recording process? I’ve really enjoyed seeing all the musicians coming back together in one physical place to make music once again. The pandemic has torn ensembles apart and isolated their players. To be in a position where we can come together with social distancing is a special thing and something we have to be grateful for, particularly as it's so unsafe to do so in so many other parts of the world. The banter is alive, the rehearsal room is buzzing and the musicians are so thrilled to be meeting again to play music for the first time in months. When was the last time you played in a full-sized music ensemble? How did you feel about coming back to record the inaugural Digital Season of performances with Steel City Strings? In February, I performed the role of the Secret Police Agent in Gian-Carlo Menotti’s ‘The Consul’ with Sydney company, ‘The Co-operative’ with a full cast of opera singers and chamber orchestra. Lots of scenes with people staged right in each other’s faces barking at each other. You wouldn’t see any of that at the moment! I’m so glad to be asked to record this cycle - a favourite of mine from the French repertoire. The digital space is an emerging place for artists to be present in and I hope that this will lead to more orchestras and opera companies streaming their performances to those around the world, even when we return to ‘normal’. Before the pandemic, we already had the Berlin Philharmoniker and their incredibly unique Digital Concert Hall platform available - now perhaps more orchestras will make themselves available where patrons cannot attend live. What is your favourite thing about the work you feature in? Do you have a special connection to your featured piece or an important time or place that you've performed it previously? I first performed this cycle at Mosman Art Gallery in a recital program with colleagues from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. A great time was had by all as we performed the great songs and cycles of the French from the 20th century. I’ve also performed it subsequently in recital with David Vance in Austinmer and Wollongong. Both very special and dear experiences to me - making music with great people. This version of the work for the Steel City String Digital Season is my own arrangement of the piece for string quartet, so this performance/recording will also be special as we work together with all the colours a string quartet can produce to bring Ravel’s score to life in a brand new way. Do you have a favourite artist who has recorded this piece that you'd like to share with our audience? It goes without saying really, but for those who don’t know him - Gérard Souzay. I love the full orchestration recorded in a studio with black and white picture and studio sound (you can watch on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/Z3CaNxa_em8 ). This is one of the first ever recordings made of any of Ravel’s music on film - and notably, music from the tail-end of Ravel’s output. This work is the last work Ravel composed - and it wasn’t even meant to be a song cycle! The original intention was for these songs to be included in a film version of 'Don Quixote' and (believe it or not) they were rejected by the film producer, Paul Morand. How can the Steel City Strings audience best support musicians at this challenging time for artists? By purchasing a digital subscription, you’re putting money into the bank accounts of local classical musicians and supporting them in a very direct way. It’s a no brainer if you’d like to help out our local artists. I thank Steel City Strings for engaging me as a solo artist. Every bit helps at this difficult time for musicians - particularly singers who can’t help but spread aerosols! -- Jeremy will perform his own arrangement of Don Quichotte à Dulcinée by Maurice Ravel with the Steel City Strings Quartet. The performance will feature as part of the November concert of the 2020 Digital Season | Oct // Nov // Dec. Jeremy is also the Manager of Steel City Strings. #SteelCityStrings #DigitalSeason #COVIDSafe #Illawarra #ClassicalMusic
