22.01.2022 SPEECH PATHOLOGY WEEK Hey! Im Caitlin, I am an avid reader and I enjoy running, swimming and a holiday to somewhere new (less so lately!) I graduated from Australian Catholic University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Speech Pathology (hons) and have continued my learning throughout my career at every possible opportunity. I have experience working with adults and children with a range of disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual ...Disability and Cerebral Palsy. Im passionate about supporting clients to develop their independence and achieve their communication goals such as speech, fluency and literacy. Stuttering is a disruption in the rhythm or flow of speech. The exact cause of stuttering is unknown, however it is thought to be linked to differences in brain activity related to speech production. Someone who stutters knows what they want to say by has trouble pronouncing it fluently. There are different types of disruptions, including: Repeated sounds (c-c-can) Repeated syllables (da-da-daddy) Repeated words (and-and-and) Repeated phrases (I want-I want-I want) Prolongations (where sounds or parts of the word are stretched out caaaaan I go) Blocks (often silent and it looks like the person is stuck) Symptoms of stuttering can vary from day-to-day and in different activities. For example, speaking in a group or talking on the telephone may make the stutter more severe, compared to singing or reading which may reduce the stutter. There are many strategies to support increasing fluency and reducing the anxiety that can accompany stuttering. If you or someone you know is experiencing difficulties with stuttering then book in with one of our adult speech pathologists.

21.01.2022 In light of what is happening around our nation and with indoor sporting venues coming to a close today. Weve devised some simple exercise ideas you give a try at home! 1. Wall sit ... Stand with your back against the wall and feet at shoulder width apart. Slide down the wall until your knees are bent to 90 degrees (as if youre sitting on a chair). 2. Bridge Lying on your back with both knees bent. Squeeze your glutes (bottom muscles) and thrust your hips up. Need a challenge? Try single leg bridge. 3. Push up Position your hands slightly wider that your shoulder. Lower your body until your chest is close to the floor. Push back up through your palms. Too difficult? Try incline push ups. Use a table or kitchen bench and perform a push up Need a challenge? Try decline push ups (not shown in video). Place your feet on the couch, bed or chair and hands positioned on the floor and perform a push up. 4. Supermans Lying face down on a bed or the floor. Keep your arms straight and raise your hands and legs off the ground, hold for 3 seconds and return back to starting position. Spice it up by alternating opposite arm and opposite leg 5. Bicycle crunches: Lying on your back, crunch up and bring one elbow to the opposite knee. 6. Burpees Bend your knees, lower your hands onto the floor in front of you and jump your feet back. Lower your chest down to the floor, push with your arms and jump back onto your feet. Reach your hands overhead and jump as high as you can. See how many repetitions you can do in 30, 45 or 60 seconds. Have a 15 second rest in between each exercise and a longer break after you finish one circuit of the exercises. Aim to repeat the cycle 3 or more times. If you have any questions, suggestions and tips of more exercises or experience any aches or pain. Call us today to book in with one of our Physiotherapists! 20.01.2022 OT WEEK 2020 Day 3 How can OT’s assist adults? This is a fair and often asked question!... Our Adult OT service helps clients roughly 17 and above to improve or maintain skills for day-to-day activities and well-being. Clients talk to the OT about activities that are important and valuable to them and which ones they are finding difficult to do because of an injury, disability, or diagnosis. Our OT’s help you to achieve or maintain independence and work out ways you can reach your full potential at the home and in the community. This could include help with household jobs, hygiene, getting dressed and cooking. The OT might suggest aids or equipment, home modifications, leisure activities and community activities to help you. An idea of how OT could be incorporated into a client’s goals could be through gardening. Did you know that just by looking at trees and plants you can reduce stress, lower blood pressure and relieve tension in muscles? Sounds great doesn’t it? .. lets jump in and explore more: By watching your garden grow, especially if you started from small seeds and bare earth, you would begin to develop confidence in your abilities. On top of this, you will start to feel better about yourself as your whole body becomes toned and the extra weight drops away. Raking and carrying leaves contributes to both endurance and strengthening activities. Stretches and contortions in the garden can help increase and maintain your flexibility. Pruning, heavy digging, mowing the lawn or pushing a loaded wheelbarrow help in muscle building. You get some amount of exercise even out of carrying plants or a bag of potting soil from the store to your car and then out into the garden. Around 300-600 calories per hour can potentially be burnt up while gardening. It depends on your intensity and the type of gardening exercises you do. Please contact Bounce Back Health for further information and to book in a session with one of our Adult OTs.

19.01.2022 SPEECH PATHOLOGY WEEK Hi, I am Jo and I would like to introduce Bounce Backs growing team of awesome speech pathologists: Olivia, Natalie, Kendal, Caitlin, Taylah and myself. Each day during Speech Pathology Week we will introduce one of our team members, who will talk about a communication topic they are passionate about. As told by Speech Pathology Australia, this week is to recognise the massive 1.2 million people in Australia who have a communication disability, and to p...romote the work done by Speech Pathologists to help these people communicate with confidence! Communication disabilities are largely invisible and can affect an individuals ability to comprehend information, explain stories or events, engage in conversations, speak clearly and much more! This week seeks to build awareness on these difficulties our peers may be experiencing each and every day. This year, the theme of Speech Pathology week is Communicating with Confidence!. We would like to thank all of our speech pathologists here at Bounce Back Health for the work they do to help their clients communicate with confidence.

17.01.2022 Lego and Language! Using Lego is a fun and interactive way to develop your childs speech and language skills! In younger children, Lego can be used to broaden and expand their vocabulary! Modelling language as you build and play will teach them new words and concepts.... In older children, use the instruction manual to work on sequencing, receptive and expressive language. One way you can do this is by keeping the instruction manual out of their view and describe the instructions to them. This asks your child to listen carefully to your instruction and find the correct pieces. You can then swap turns, so they can then practice delivering specific and detailed instructions for you to follow. #bouncebackheath #bbh #speechpathology #speechpathologist #sp #munnopara #lego #speech #language #speechtherapy #speechies #therapy #speechtherapyideas #speechandlanguage

17.01.2022 RUN FOR AUTISM This week some of our Bounce Back Health staff members are participating in Aspect Australia’s ‘Run for Autism’ event. Our staff have each set themselves a running challenge (whether that be 10km, a half marathon or full marathon) with the goal of raising funds to provide people on the autism spectrum to make the most of their education, develop life-long skills, improve their confidence and relationships and maximise their opportunities in life.... Our team has collectively set out to run 300km and have raised nearly $3,000 so far! Our team says: We are running for autism to help create a world where no-one on the autism spectrum is left behind. We will be running from Sunday 1st- 8th November while raising much needed funds to support people on the autism spectrum. An estimated 1 in every 70 people is on the spectrum. Along with their family members, this means autism is a part of daily life for over a million Australians. People on the spectrum see, hear, feel and experience the world differently. For many, simply coping with the everyday can lead to confusion, anxiety and isolation. By coming together and taking action, we can help provide opportunities for people on the autism spectrum to participate, engage and thrive in the world around them. In addition to raising funds, this week is about raising awareness, alleviating stigma and creating a more inclusive world: we have shared some myth conceptions vs truths posted by Aspect Australia (https://www.runforautism.org.au)

This may be an especially challenging time for children who have difficulty coping with change and may have difficulties putting such signific...ant events into perspective. 12.01.2022 FUSSY EATERS Its not uncommon for a child to be fussy when it comes to food, and we all know how hard it can be to navigate mealtimes with a picky eater! This can be a normal part of development although it can become an issue in the long term especially if the child has an extremely limited range of foods or if the child is displaying certain behaviours around certain foods.... Some ways to help make mealtimes more enjoyable for you and your child include; - Making mealtimes fun such as getting your child to help set the table, choosing their own plates, cups, using adult forks or playing their favourite music at mealtimes - Letting the child help prepare the food for the meal - Not hiding veggies in other foods, let the child see what theyre eating and not become anxious that something is going to be hidden in their food - Present new foods on the plate but dont force your child eat them, instead talk about how they look, feel, smell or where they come from Some red flags which could be an indicator that your child may need therapy include; - Having less than 20 foods that they are able to consistently eat, especially if foods are being dropped over time with no new foods replacing those that were lost - Becoming anxious or not being able to physically look at certain foods on the table - Not being able to touch certain foods - Vomiting when looking at or touching certain food textures - Ongoing poor weight gain - Was/is unable to wean off of baby food or transition to purees or solid foods If your child is showing these signs we have speech pathologists trained in the evidence based SOS approach to fussy eating. The earlier you begin working with a feeding therapist, the faster you will see changes!

12.01.2022 A great activity to keep the kids occupied and develop language while being isolated is scavenger hunts! The kids are having fun trying to find everything on the list while you can help them to develop their language skills further by talking about; - Where they can find the objects e.g. under, next to, behind, on top - The colour of the object ... - How to object looks e.g. long, short, fat, thin, round, shiny etc - How the object feels e.g. smooth, bumpy, wet, dry - How the object can be used e.g. to build with, to make a pretend phone etc - Where the object came from e.g. from a big tree, out of the toy box etc - Asking older kids to think of stories they could make up using specific objects - Using the objects to complete a craft activity e.g. making a face with the objects found outside There are so many possibilities to engage kids to help develop language skills! #learningthroughplay #fun #isoactivities

11.01.2022 SPEECH PATHOLOGY WEEK Hello! I am Natalie and I have been a Speech Pathologist for almost two years, completing my Masters of Speech Pathology in 2018. I have learnt that my job is not just about helping children talk, but to build their confidence to talk freely and develop resilience for when they make mistakes. I enjoy working with children of all ages who have difficulty with speech sounds and language skills, ...as well as social and emotional skills. I am currently in the process of running the Secret Agent Society for Social Skills group program. This program is for children between 8-12 years old and teaches a variety of skills including: Recognising emotions in themselves and others Expressing their feelings in appropriate ways Coping with feelings of anger and anxiety Communicating and playing with others Coping with mistakes, transitions and challenges Building and maintaining friendships Solving social problems Preventing and managing bullying and teasing Acknowledging their personal strengths This program has proven to be effective in children who have social and emotional difficulties, as well as children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), anxiety and other mental health diagnoses. This program allows the children to crack the code of emotional and social skills in ways which are relative to them, and ultimately, improves their ability to integrate into social situations every day. If your child has difficulty with any of the above skills, get in touch to secure their position in our secret agent group running again next year.
