24.01.2022 WHY IS FOOT HEALTH SO IMPORTANT? Your feet are on of the most vital parts of your body! They keep us moving and get us to where we need to be so, keeping your feet in tip top condition is important. Here are a few tips on how to keep your feet healthy:... 1. Check you feet daily - check for small cuts, sores and swelling in any areas. 2. Moisturise everyday - keep your feet smooth, avoiding in between your toes as this can cause infection. 3. Avoid tight fitting shoes - footwear should be comfortable, not restricting. 4. Rotate your shoes as much as possible - this way you wont be wearing the same shoes everyday and it gives your shoes a chance to aerate. 5. Trim your nails straight across - this will avoid any chance of an ingrown nail. #bouncepodiatry #exceptionalpodiatry #happierfeet #passion #performance #potential

21.01.2022 WHAT ARE BUNIONS AND WHAT CAUSES THEM? A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe. It occurs when some of the bones in the front part of your foot move out of place. This causes the tip of your big toe to get pulled toward the smaller toes and forces the joint at the base of your big toe to stick out. The skin over the bunion might be red and sore.... Wearing tight, narrow shoes might cause bunions or make them worse. Bunions can also develop as a result of the shape of your foot, a foot deformity or a medical condition, such as arthritis. #bouncepodiatry #exceptionalpodiatry #happierfeet #passion #performance #potential

17.01.2022 THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS TO MANAGE YOUR BUNION! A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the big toe joint that causes the big toe to deviate towards the 2nd toe. The causes of bunions include: poor footwear, genetic predisposition, biomechanical factors, shape of your feet, previous foot injuries / stress, or a medical condition such as arthritis resulting in a foot deformity. ... Here are the top 3 most effective ways to manage your bunions Footwear It is best to wear shoes that are supportive, comfortable and spacious. Wearing tight and narrow shoes is one of the causes that leads to bunion formation and continuing wearing poor fitting shoes might worsen the symptoms and deformity. Make sure you find a pair of shoes that has ample amount of space in the toe box to accommodate for the bunions. Strapping Strapping your big toe joint will not change the alignment of the big toe joint in relation to the foot. But it will improve the symptoms associated with bunions, such as pain and reduced movement. Rehabilitation exercises People with bunion often have associated foot muscle overuse and / or weakness. This is because the foot muscles have to work a lot harder due to the change in big toe joint alignment. Starting rehabilitation exercises for the muscles in the feet will not only increase the strength of your foot, it will also help you walk better. #bouncepodiatry #exceptionalpodiatry #happierfeet #passion #performance #potential

14.01.2022 WHAT DOES HAVING HEALTHY FEET MEAN? Our feet are mirrors of our overall health and we our feet everyday; whether it be for walking the dog or playing a game of sports. Foot pain or early fatigue can stop us from doing what we love and can reduce our independence and daily function. Having foot issues can also reduce our social confidence and ability to perform, which can negatively affect our mental health. Thus, during October, we are promoting Foot Health Month to ensure... our patients can be on their feet and achieve their goals. Experiencing pain could be the sign of an issue that should be addressed, and leaving the problem for longer will mean a delay in diagnosis and treatment. This could have a lasting impact as the return to full function will take longer and more drastic measures may have to be taken in the management of the condition. For people with chronic health conditions such as diabetes or psoriasis, their feet may be negatively impacted in a number of ways. You should strive to maintain healthy feet by seeing your podiatrist as recommended to ensure you still have good blood flow, sensation and support to ensure there are no further foot complications. Diabetes is the leading cause of lower limb amputations, and in most people this can be averted by maintaining healthy feet and lifestyles. If you are worried about the health of your feet, make sure to see a podiatrist for your foot inspection. #bouncepodiatry #exceptionalpodiatry #happierfeet #passion #performance #potential

13.01.2022 HOW TO PUSH YOURSELF WITHOUT HURTING YOURSELF! Majority of us have a fitness or health goal; something for us to work towards. Amidst working towards our goal, we sometimes push ourselves beyond our limits to a point where we injure ourselves. The ability for you to perform without injuring yourself depends on a few factors:... Physical state Ask yourself if youre feeling your absolute best before a workout. If youre feeling tired after a long day at work or is still recovering from your previous workout from the day before, its best not to push yourself beyond 5/10 effort. The chances of you injuring yourself drastically increases with that circumstances. Mental state Always check-in with your mental state prior to performing a physical activity. When youre feeling down, it affects your ability to concentrate and perform. Talk to a friend to debrief before pushing yourself too hard. Weather It takes longer to warm up our muscles during colder weather. Make sure to spend an extra few minutes doing dynamic stretches prior to your workout. It is also important to rehydrate yourself with enough fluid and electrolytes on a hotter day. #bouncepodiatry #exceptionalpodiatry #happierfeet #passion #performance #potential

11.01.2022 WHAT IS HYPER-MOBILITY AND HOW WILL IT AFFECT MY CHILD? One of the most common questions asked during one of our paediatric consultants would be Is my child hypermobile?. Joint hyper-mobility is when a joint moves beyond the normal range with little effort, for their age.... Most children and adolescents are very flexible and bendy compared to people of old age, with flexibility decreasing as they get older. It is common for children to have joint hypermobility and it also frequently runs in families. In fact, some ballet dancers, gymnasts, and swimmers are able to achieve their athletic performance due to joint hypermobility. Early diagnosis is crucial to ensure patients health and development. It can also help with management and slow the progression of the condition. Health professionals are able to assess how hypermobile a child is / if your child has joint hypermobility and can help in managing the condition. Joint hypermobility is often treated with a proper and comprehensive rehabilitation program of physical strengthening and reconditioning. Through physical fitness, people with hypermobility are able to protect their joints and minimise injury as they strengthen their muscular structure surrounding the joint. 09.01.2022 TOP 3 TIPS TO AVOID INGROWN NAILS! 1. Trim your nails straight across DO NOT curve your nails.. If you have your toenails done at a salon, be sure to tell your pedicurist to trim your nails straight across. If you have a condition that causes poor blood flow to your feet and you cant trim your nails, see a podiatrist regularly to have your nails trimmed.... 2. Keep your nails at a moderate length Trim your toenails so theyre even with the tips of your toes. If you trim your toenails too short, the pressure from your shoes on your toes may cause the nail to become ingrown and cause you grief. 3. Where shoes that fit you properly Shoes that place too much pressure on your toes may cause a nail to grow into surrounding tissue. Ensure youre buying and wearing properly fitted shoes. #bouncepodiatry #exceptionalpodiatry #happierfeet #passion #performance #potential

07.01.2022 There’s nothing worse than being in the same room with a person who has smelly shoes/feet. We tend to sweat more with summer approaching, we’re more likely to have smelly shoes/feet. Below are a few tips and tricks you could implement to get rid of the funky odour in your shoes: 1. Sun dry your shoes weekly for 2-3 hours - this is a natural disinfectant that dries shoes out and prevents fungal and bacteria growth. If possible, remove the inner sole and undo the lacing to o...pen up the tongue of the shoe. 2. Leave baking soda (approximately a teaspoon in a small bag) / charcoal / tea bag in your shoes overnight - a natural deodoriser. 3. Apply shoe powder in your shoes - highly recommended for people who have very sweaty feet (a condition called hyperhidrosis). 4. Tea tree or eucalyptus oil spray your shoes as an alternative disinfectant and deodoriser. 5. Wear socks with your closed-toe shoes to reduce the absorption of sweat directly into the shoe. #bouncepodiatry #exceptionalpodiatry #happierfeet #passion #performance #potential

06.01.2022 ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GROWING PAINS! Growing pains are commonly found in kids between the age of 2 and 12. Kids with growing pains often experience aches and soreness of both legs, which usually occurs in the middle of the night and subsides in the morning. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, it might even wake a child up from their sleep . Despite the name of the condition, there is no evidence suggesting that growth itself is painful but the pain is due... to other factors. What are the symptoms? Symptoms of growing pain vary depending on the amount of activity a child is exposed to during the day. These symptoms are most likely due to: 1. Muscle overuse of the lower limb during the day. 2. Reduced muscle strength leading to joints and bones that aren’t being well supported. How can this be managed? Some general ways to manage growing pains include rest, heat pack compression, massages and stretching, and physical exercises to strengthen the muscles of the lower limb. It is important to seek professional advice to get your child’s lower limb symptoms properly assessed and diagnosed. This will allow our podiatrists to implement the best treatment plan and to ensure your child receives the best outcomes so they can return to being a happy and active kid! #bouncepodiatry #exceptionalpodiatry #happierfeet #passion #performance #potential
