25.01.2022 Can you use roasting to impact the caffeine content in your coffee? Does a dark roast really have more caffeine? Turns out, caffeine levels are virtually unchanged through roasting, as caffeine is stable at roasting temperatures. So by bean, the caffeine levels are close to the same. HOWEVER.... through roasting, the mass of the coffee beans is decreased. Because we roast a darker roast for longer, it will contain more caffeine than the same amount of coffee as a lighter roast, when measured by grams.

23.01.2022 This is totally my excuse this morning...

22.01.2022 5 uses for your old coffee grounds 1 Compost Them Coffee grounds are great for the compost heap. Composts come under the banner of the "green" part of your compost heap (with fruit & veg scraps and garden waste) The green stuff provides nitrogen needed for healthy soil, which coffee grounds are full of. The rest of your compost is the "brown" matter (dead leaves, cardboard, straw or paper). ... 2 Repel Pests As well as being nitrogen-rich, which means good for fertilizing the garden, coffee grounds make a great repellent for garden pests like ants and slugs. Just sprinkle your used coffee grounds around your plants for a soil enriching, chemical-free pesticide. 3 Remove Smells Coffee grounds are absorbent and that means they're also great at absorbing bad smells (ironic, seeing as coffee smells so good). Your used grounds can be put in an open container in the fridge or freezer to neutralise unwanted odours. 4 Or Add Scent The smell of coffee is almost as delicious as it tastes. If you're keen to get your craft on, use the old grounds to make homemade candles. Save the wax ends of old candles to create DIY coffee candles. (A great way to upcycle your old coffee mugs too!) 5 Exfoliate Coffee grounds make for a great exfoliator, removing dead skin cells and rejuvenating the skin. Make a homemade body scrub by mixing your spent grounds with oil such as coconut, jojoba or almond. (Coffee is also said to reduce cellulite!) See more

03.01.2022 [ Tamping ] How a barista tamps is a major determinant to the quality of espresso. The aim of tamping is to remove any air pockets in the coffee basket, while ensuring it is evenly leveled. Compacting the coffee firmly and uniformly forces the water to flow through the grounds in a way that best extracts the coffee flavours. Without proper tamping, the coffee leaves "channels" for the water to flow through which leads to over and under ...extracting in the coffee in and around those channels. Tamp evenly and consistently, hard enough that you can feel the puck is compressed. You should feel that the puck doesn’t go down anymore, while making sure it is horizontally leveled. 02.01.2022 Today's espresso machines allow you to dial in profiles via an app, control flow rates, and more. But what does this mean for baristas and coffee shop owners?" This question was posed by the Perfect Daily Grind a short while ago. While it's interesting to consider the ability to even create machines that can imitate (to a degree) roles being done by humans, not only is the art of the perfect latte still sitting squarely in the hands of a talented barista, but do customers even WANT a robot behind the counter? Surely isn't one of the reasons we venture out to cafes for the social aspect, the service and the human connection made from behind the coffee machine each day?
