23.01.2022 WHY ARE THE PSOAS MUSCLES CONSTANTLY CONTRACTED DURING PROLONGED PERIODS OF STRESS? Whether you run, bike, dance, practice yoga, or just hang out on your couc...h, your psoas muscles are involved. Thats because your psoas muscles are the primary connectors between your torso and your legs. They affect your posture and help to stabilise your spine. The psoas muscles are made of both slow and fast twitching muscles. Because they are major flexors, weak psoas muscles can cause many of the surrounding muscles to compensate and become overused. That is why a tight or overstretched psoas muscle could be the cause of many or your aches and pains, including low back and pelvic pain. ANATOMY Structurally, your psoas muscles are the deepest muscles in your core. They attach from your 12th thoracic vertebrae to your 5 lumbar vertebrae, through your pelvis and then finally attach to your femurs. In fact, they are the only muscles that connect your spine to your legs. Your psoas muscles allow you to bend your hips and legs towards your chest, for example when you are going up stairs. They also help to move your leg forward when you walk or run. Your psoas muscles are the muscles that flex your trunk forward when bend over to pick up something from the floor. They also stabilize your trunk and spine during movement and sitting. THE PSOAS AND FIGHT OR FLIGHT RESPONSE The psoas muscles support your internal organs and work like hydraulic pumps allowing blood and lymph to be pushed in and out of your cells. Your psoas muscles are vital not only to your structural well-being, but also to your psychological well-being because of their connection to your breath. Heres why: there are two tendons for the diaphragm (called the crura) that extend down and connect to the spine alongside where the psoas muscles attach. One of the ligaments (the medial arcuate) wraps around the top of each psoas. Also, the diaphragm and the psoas muscles are connected through fascia that also connects the other hip muscles. These connections between the psoas muscle and the diaphragm literally connect your ability to walk and breathe, and also how you respond to fear and excitement. Thats because, when you are startled or under stress, your psoas contracts. In other words, your psoas has a direct influence on your fight or flight response! During prolonged periods of stress, your psoas is constantly contracted. The same contraction occurs when you: sit for long periods of time engage in excessive running or walking sleep in the fetal position do a lot of sit-ups Here are some tips for getting your psoas back in balance: Avoid sitting for extended periods Add support to your car seat Try Resistance Flexibility exercises Get a professional massage Release stress and past traumas Stretch HOW TO STRETCH Roller Psoas Stretch Use a foam roller for this passive, relaxing stretch that lengthens your psoas, one of your deep hip flexors. 1. Place the roller perpendicular to your spine and lie with your sacrum (the back of your pelvis) not your spine on the roller. 2. Pull your left knee toward your chest, keeping your right heel on the ground. You should feel a stretch on the front of your right hip. 3. To increase the stretch, reach your right arm over your head and open your left knee slightly out to the left. Hold for 30 seconds, then switch legs. Repeat as needed.

21.01.2022 The Facia as a Second Nervous System
20.01.2022 Kids love Bowen Therapy Mr Tom Bowen helped relieve the suffering thousands of children over his lifetime. He was dedicated to his healing work and had consiste...nt days opened to treating handicap and disadvantage people (without charge), many of those were youth. One of the most famous photos of Tom is him working on a little handicap girl from (see attached photos). In the documentary These Two Hands, his close friends share with viewers there personal witness of Toms inspiring work with children. Bowen Therapy is one of the most soothing and nurturing treatments available. Every move is performed with the most gentleness of touch, and is suitable fo all ages and vulnerabilities. It works wonders on children and helps them on so many levels, both physically and mentally. Children have there own share of hiccups and injuries, from bruises and bumps learning to walk, to ankle sprains at soccer and the skate bowl, to name a few. They are like sponges and absorb stresses all around such as in their home and school environments. Babies are supper sensitive and take on directly the emotional state of mum, and the world around them. Childrens little nervous systems gets overwhelmed just like adults and can cause immune-disfunction, tendency for accidents and injury, slow recovery, lethargy, sleep issues and emotional disturbances. Georgi Ilchev has done comprehensive research on the effectiveness of Bowen Therapy for treating baby colic in Bulgaria. He found a significant reduction in overall symptoms in those babies treated with Bowen in a short period, compared to those treated with medication. Chloe bought her to young boys, Atticus 4 years old, who was complaining of back and knee pain and Avery 3 years old, with chronic lung problems. She found them to be both irritable, having behavioural issues and restless sleepers. After only a few treatments, Chloe noted that they were more restful and slept through most of the night, their mood and focus improved and pain resolve. Melanie regularly brings her children in for tune ups, Ari 14 and Ty 9 years old, both prior to Bowen Therapy had complained of growing pains, back aches and suffered with anxiety. At times they would experience anxiety attaches and for Ty compounded with emotional outbursts. Since regular treatments aches and pains are no more and anxiety is rare. Zylan 11 years old shares his Bowen experience, well sometimes I get injured cause I play a lot and do back flips in the air. My ankles and knees get sore at times. In my treatments I often fall asleep, and get this little reaction after with some aches and then everything just goes away and I feel good. Bowen Therapy is a wonderful complementary therapy for children! Written by Helen Dobra Clarence Valley Bowen Therapy

10.01.2022 Bowen Therapy has shown to be a powerful treatment for Sciatica. Sciatica can be a very debilitating condition and often tricky to treat. Sciatica is a term use...d to describe nerve pain in the leg that is caused by irritation and/or compression of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica originates in the lower back, radiates deep into the buttock, and travels down the leg, following the path of the large sciatic nerve. There are many different types of nerve pain that this condition can cause, burning, shooting, tingling, or numbness. Generally, the person experiences an overall sense of weakness in the area. Sciatica can be caused by a number of factors such as a herniated lumbar disc, lumbar spinal stenosis, lumbar degenerative disc disease, Spondylolisthesis, muscle spasms (particularly Psoas or Piriformis), Sacroiliac joint dysfunction, or Spinal Tumours. Doctors have a limited capacity to deal with sciatic and often prescribe the patient anti-inflammatory and pain medication and/or quartertone injection, then refer them on. Unfortunately, for many persons, this may lead to an endless stream of treatments achieving limited relief. Many Bowen Therapists have shared their experience with countless clients suffering from this condition and have had months of treatments with little resolve. Both patients and Bowen Therapists are often astounded at how quickly the Bowen technique can work. Sue Reed a registered nurse shares her experience, I work in a large building that houses 115 elderly residence. There is a lot of walking around, 2 levels and long corridors. There is an incredible amount of paperwork and at times I spend long hours sitting. It is a lot to manage and my stress levels waver and during this time my sciatic plays up. Sometimes I cant even lift my leg to go up the stairs or bend over to tie up my shoelaces, without feeling excruciating pain. After three sessions of Bowen Therapy with my prescribed exercises and now my sciatic has completely gone. Its Heaven! I now go for quarterly tune-ups and dont suffer with it anymore. Interestingly Sue introduced Jim her husband to Bowen Therapy who was also suffering from sciatic and could no longer ride his motorbike and experienced limited mobility. Starmax Films interviewed him for our Documentary These Two hands, because he had one of the most incredible stories and was previously a huge sceptic. Charismatic Jim tells of his sciatic resolution in just one session and unexpectedly his PTSD induced nightmares also stopped immediately. He is now considering becoming a Bowen Therapist, he calls it, MAGIC! 09.01.2022 Bowen Therapy likely Boosts your immune system! This is expressed often by patients. Every day we are exposed to trillions of highly diverse living microbes..., including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoans. These pathogens are dynamic rapidly mutating to adapt to the everchanging environment. The majority are not harmful whilst others are potentially lethal. This is nothing new, in fact, the human species has evolved in a sea of microorganisms. We must remember that we all have an incredibly highly tuned evolved body geared for survival, equipped with the most complex chemical factory and specialist commando cells designed to wage war against harmful pathogens. Not only are we surrounded by a world of microorganisms but, we are their host and outnumber human cells by 10 to 1. You could say that there are many ecosystems of specific microbe communities found throughout our body, on our skin, hair, every orifice, and throughout our insides, stomach, bloodstream, even lay refuge in cells. Scientists are still only scratching the surface to fully understand the importance of our living ecosystem in relation to our immune system. Research is finding that microorganisms play a vital role in optimum immunity function and human health. We are learning that there is a delicate balance between our immune system-microbiota alliance and the maintenance of regulatory pathways to maintain tolerance and resilience to innocuous antigens. Microbiologists are finding that there has been a gradual decline in the diversity and resilience of our microbiota important to establish balanced immune responses. Due to the overuse of antibiotics, changes in diet, exposure to toxins, and stress. This phenomenon is proposed to account for some of the dramatic rises in autoimmune inflammatory disorders and has left us more vulnerable to harmful pathogens. Given all this, we have the ability to make better choices to support our immune system by understanding the importance of our microbiota. We can positively influence our immune system by creating an internal environment in which our ecosystem can thrive. By simply making better food choices away from processed foods to fresh fruit and veg and reducing sugar. Increase water intake, reduce caffeine, and alcohol. Integrate daily exercise and immerse in the sun for vitamin D, and bath in positive ions by spending time in nature. Also, integrating practices to calm the body such as deep breathing, meditation, listen to calming music, yoga, and chi gong. Above all, it is important to connect with friends and have fun. When you feel good your body releases happy hormones and every cell is more energized, your body PH becomes alkaline. When we are happy our body is in rest relax repair phase (parasympathetic mode), in this state every cell knows exactly what to do to keep you well. However, in a state of unhappiness and stress mode (sympathetic), the body gets overloaded and the autonomic nervous system becomes confused and compromised. Bowen Therapy is particularly efficient in gently bringing the body back into parasympathetic mode, were all body functions and immunity is optimized. In addition, it greatly assists the body to eliminate toxins and reduce inflammation. Bowen Therapy alongside other positive lifestyle choices can quickly boost your immune system for ultimate protection. instagram.com/bowentherapydocumentary Written by Helen Dobra Clarence Valley Bowen Therapy helendobra.com Starmax Films https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3337124/ https://microbiologysociety.org//microb/immune-system.html https://www.frontiersin.org/articles//fimmu.2018.01830/full https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/324417 https://www.healthline.com/health/yoga-for-calm https://taichinews.com/about-qigong

08.01.2022 Bowen Therapy is immensely effective in the prevention, repair, and recovery of sports injuries. The Australian genius behind it was obsessed with two things, s...port, and the physical body. "Tom Bowen & Footy - Born in Brunswick and living in Geelong for much of his working life was he a tiger or a cat fan? In reality who knows, however, I think in the end he just loved footy and especially helping the players that got injured. Probably learning a lot from treating fit young men as he developed his craft. After serving in World War II, Mr. Bowen became interested in new ways of alleviating human suffering. Taking up his father's trade of carpentry and working as a general hand at the Geelong cement works in time he would treat the ailments of his fellow workers. As more people came to learn of his skills he would go on to see clients in the evenings after doing a day at the Cement Works. Before expanding to work full time as a therapist. He had a passion for treating kids and the underprivileged and disabled treating. Opening up his clinic on a Saturday morning at no charge, traveling from near and far, many would go on to have improved health and quality of life. Tom also worked with many of the sports clubs in and around Geelong, often driving all over Geelong and the surrounding district on a Saturday afternoon, attending to injured footballers and other sportspeople. He would then treat them and others on Saturday evenings back at his clinic when further treatment was necessary this was also offered as a free clinic. Older guys who I know from my own playing days who played at the time were sent to him to have injuries seen to, including a carload arriving down from Ballarat on Saturday night on occasion. Go and see Tommy Bowen they would be told, not really knowing what to expect and often bemused at what had happened in the treatment but nevertheless feeling better a few days later. I love hearing their stories. I look forward to being able to do similar in the years to come with our local footballers and netballers. It’s interesting the game has changed a lot in many ways, but the Bowen I use is very much based on what Mr. Bowen was doing back in the 50s and 60s and still very effective." Matt Hart (Matt Hart Bowen Therapy) It's not surprising more high-end athletes are turning to Bowen Therapy as it doesn't just heal the body, it puts it in an optimal state which can actually prevent injury. 05.01.2022 Medical professionals around the world are choosing Bowen Therapy. Bowen is progressively becoming recognized as an invaluable complementary therapy. We intervi...ewed an array of medical professionals who utilize Bowen Therapy in ‘These Two Hands’ documentary, including, doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, midwives, pharmacists, to name a few. We were privileged to hear their amazing stories and how they have helped so many by using Bowen Therapy. In addition, they all highlighted the need for broader community awareness and acceptance as a stand-alone therapy to be integrated with orthodox medicine. The landscape of medicine around the world has been slowly progressing toward a more holistic and individualized approach to healing. This has been due to increase awareness with access to information through social media, limitations of orthodox medicine, cultural ties with traditional healing, a growing trend towards holistic and preventative medicine. This approach to healthcare incorporates a patient’s mind, spirituality, and sense of community into the healing process. Integrative medicine has been typically well received and the demand has been steadily increasing in primary hospitals in many countries in Europe, the USA, and Asia. Countries like China have led the way over the millennia, by incorporating specific healing foods, herbs, acupuncture, medical Chi Gong, and more hospitals. Currently, there is a great demand to integrate allopathic and traditional healing in developing countries. Many governments such as South Africa and India are moving forward with formal integration, undertaking the necessary research and policy changes. There is ‘huge potential’ for Bowen Therapy to be integrated into the mainstream health care system, in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and medical clinics. ‘These Two Hands’ documentary project continues to be invaluable in helping to raise awareness and contribute to the growth of this incredible modality. We greatly appreciate your ongoing support. Please help us to continue to spread the word by engaging with us online, sharing our posts on Facebook and Instagram, and getting your connections to like our page. 01.01.2022 From fascialfitness.com.au: 'Physiological responses of manual therapy revealed in animal models' Manual therapy has been known to have positive impacts on various conditions. Trials were usually carried out to find out if a treatment is effective for a specific condition. To understand the mechanism of how manual therapy works and looked at the physiological and biological responses of massage, researchers have used animals as a model. Manual therapy such as stretching, mass...age, joint mobilisation or manipulation were performed or simulated on animals. The benefit of using animals over humans is that specific physiological responses can be analysed. Researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham recently compiled the findings to evaluate the knowledge that can be gained from those experiments. The researchers selected 78 studies that met their criteria. The major findings are: Joint mobilisation induced changes in: nociceptive response and inflammatory profile, gene expression, receptor activation, neurotransmitter release, and enzymatic activity. Spinal manipulation elicited changes in: muscle spindle response, nocifensive reflex response and neuronal activity, electromyography, and immunologic response. Physiological changes associated with massage therapy include: autonomic, circulatory, lymphatic and immunologic functions, visceral response, gene expression, neuroanatomy, function and pathology, and cellular response to in vitro simulated massage. The effect depends on variability of parameters, such as applied techniques, body parts, duration, and pressure of massage. The authors concluded that clinical research supports manual therapy induces physiological response. As the research was conducted on animal models, the results may not be directly translated human as they depend on the mode delivery and other parameters.
