20.01.2022 A GOAT POST: On Monday, Dr. Backus, Dr. Lillard, and Dr. Johnson teamed up to remove a buildup of calcium carbonate stones from a male goat’s bladder and ure...thra. This 250lb goat now has a Foley catheter placed until it begins urinating normally again. This is what we call a blocked goat. Diagnosed by seeing signs of the goat straining to urinate, vocalizing while urinating, painful urination, and ultimately not urinating at all. How to HELP prevent this from happening? Make sure your goat’s diet consists primarily of forage. Our veterinarians also recommend NO grain whatsoever for male goats. Discuss with your personal veterinarian that knows your specific farm situation and goat herd needs. There is no 100% cure all for every goat; in addition, there is no simple method preventing urinary stones. However, with past and present research we are able to apply what we do know to better our goat farm management practices such as water quality/pH, supplements (salt/ammonium chloride/sodium bicarb/ACV/minerals), calcium:phosphorous ratio, castration age, forage choice, water intake, and grain or no grain. (Ultimately, our intention for this post is to raise awareness of male goat urinary stones and the importance of using the best goat management practices.)

13.01.2022 Drive the profitability of your goats by ensuring you always introduce healthy animals onto your property. The best way you can do this is by always asking for ...a National Goat Health Declaration before any animal steps foot on your property. This applies whenever you are introducing new goats onto the farm, whether you’re simply agisting for a neighbour, purchasing a new herd, or leasing a buck for breeding. http://ow.ly/r7ny3099Qke See more
