19.01.2022 Bowens Legend - Bob Hassan Bob Hassan was born in 1923 in Cowra New South Wales. He joined Bowens in 1973 and became Branch Manager of our Mt Evelyn Store after 23 years with Ringwood Timber. Under his management the branch became the company's leading profit contributor. Bob was one of Jack Bowen's chief advisers (pictured together), and in 1984 he was appointed area supervisor of Mount Evelyn, Croydon and Rowville, with responsibility for the introduction of equal faciliti...es of service, price and stock range. Bob retired from full-time employment 3 years later to take on a part-time consultant for the business and sat on the Board of Directors from 1988 to 1991. Bob was instrumental in developing Bowens reputation for customer service, working on the maxim "it can take a lifetime to build up a good reputation and five minutes to lose it". His legacy continued with his sons and grandsons working for Bowens, one of which (Stuart) is currently Head of Commercial & Major Accounts.

18.01.2022 Jeff Harvey - Bowens Legend Jeff was born in October 1944, and joined Bowens in 1961. After completing his Cadet-ship 3 years later, Jeff Harvey worked in sales and was responsible for despatch. In this capacity he was described as having the ability to, "sell ice to the Eskimos'. When Bowens' second branch, the Long Island Timber Company (which is now our Hastings store), was opened in 1970, Jeff Harvey was appointed the first manager at the age of 26. In the mid 1990s, Jeff... did a short stint at our Oakleigh branch (now know as Bentleigh East) before returning to Hastings as the Branch Manager. In the early 2000s, under Jeff's supervision, Hastings recorded its first ever $1 million sales month. Following this role, Jeff transferred to the Support Office to take on the role of Group Product Manager for flooring, before moving in to his current Timber Specialist role. Today, "Harvs" works part time in this role passing down his decades worth of industry knowledge across the business to staff and customers. Stef founded the Tradie Lady Club (TLC) which supports, inspires & connects women in construction.... Matt Menichelli, director of Elevate Building Group, has worked with both The Block and Reno Rumble. A registered builder & carpenter, Matt’s company continues to grow from strength to strength.

10.01.2022 Team spirit and our staff is the core of our success at Bowens. In the late 1930s the social committee was run by Bowens employees from each department (the mill, joinery, and the office), frequent picnics were organised as part of the social calendar. Captured in this photograph are staff and friends who assembled at Macaulay Road, North Melbourne in February 1937. A hired bus took employees to Kinglake to enjoy lunch and drinks followed by an outdoor cricket match.
