25.01.2022 M A R K E T U P D A T E ! In Fruit There is life yet in the apple market especially now that the stone fruit season has started well, sort of Apple growers don’t want to be left with loads of fruit, and the first to move are the Royal Gala apples: down to $2.75/Kg this week. With their characteristic tiger stripe, they still look and taste great!... Mango prices are holding up , but we’re still expecting them come down to $2.50 a piece next week. From the growers’ own forecast, it appears that they’ve been able to flatten the peak by delaying picking and shipments to try and avoid over-supply. The market is rigged shock horror! Ok, we can’t blame them for trying to maximise their returns: farming is uncertain business at the best of times, and they may well have a couple of bad years ahead of them. In which case have some cash in reserve may well make the difference between surviving and throwing in the towel. The citrus season is about to flip on its head: Navels will be superseded by Valencias, lemons and grapefruit prices will go through the roof, and mandarins will finish up altogether. And limes? Who knows: they’re either hot or cold. In terms of other fruit: Good value: for bananas, kiwi, mangoes, mandarins, oranges, lemons, pears, berries, apples and (just) pineapples Best left alone for a few weeks: watermelon, rockmelon, passionfruit, limes #boxdivvy #foodhub #lakemac #buttabansw #fruitandveg #marketupdate #saveongroceries

20.01.2022 Ginger has SO MANY uses other than throwing in a stir fry! New season ginger is so fresh and full of goodness, and the price is LOW too. Perfect for buying up a heap and trying out a few other ways to prepare ginger make syrup for use in cocktails, softdrinks etc freeze it in small portions to have on hand for throwing into dishes needing a lift infuse it to make ginger tea with honey and lemon for a health boosting warm drink... pickled ginger is a great accompaniment to sushi or noodle broth dishes See more

19.01.2022 M A R K E T U P D A T E Both Fuji and Royal Gala apples have dropped in price. They’re crisp, sweet and make for a nice change from the still abundant stone fruit. The Williams pears are definitely worth a try, especially at the sub-$2/Kg price... Cool and wet weather has put a lid on watermelon demand, and prices are sagging. We’re getting 5kg seedless melons from Emmett’s Farm in Rossmore, just 50km from Sydney’s CBD so they’re super-fresh and sweet. Red Crimson grapes is our pick of the week: sweet, crisp & crunchy and around $4/Kg New this week: Kiwi Berries. Surprisingly sweet and full of vitamin C, they are great if you can’t wait for kiwis to mature. From NZ and under $4 a punnet. Shepards avocadoes are slowly coming down in price - $1.38 right now. also falling is ginger which saw a whopping 40% price drop over the week, thanks to new season fresh/young ginger coming in from QLD. This is uncured ginger that needs to be kept in the fridge. It’s milder than cured ginger, and has just come down from $49 to $29/Kg New season Sweet Potatoes from Bundaberg cut a beautiful orange colour and are just $1.55/Kg. Kim and Laks Ung from Golden Fields in Wallacia have a glut of grape tomatoes: help them out, they’re just $1.66 a punnet Coriander and flat-leafed parsley are still abundant and will cost you just $1 each. I think I can hear you say stir-fry? Asian greens, ginger, garlic, chillies, coriander it’s all good and cheap.

18.01.2022 This week, we are selling the most amazing strawberries from DM Jennings in Cygnet, Tasmania. Like many farmers, they are desperately short of farm labour and as conditions have been perfect for strawberries, there’s tonnes of them. So all hands have been sent into the fields to pick, and no-one is left at the packing shed to sort and grade by size. No worries, we said: We’ll have ANY size and shape, so long as they taste great. To make the packing easier, they ...put them in 500g jumbo punnets. And get this: we can sell these beauties for $2.50 per punnet. Yes you heard that right, a half kilo pack for $2.50. And as they’re grown in a relatively cool climate, they’re sweet and they’ll last. For that price, you can buy 2 punnets: 1 to eat and 1 for jam! Have your cake and eat it too See more

18.01.2022 S T O N E F R U U T S E A S O N The start of the stone fruit season is one of the highlights in the fruit season Soon we’ll have apricots, cherries, plums but we’re starting with peaches and nectarines. ... They have actually been around on the market for 3 or 4 weeks, but they’re only now starting to taste really good. The fruit has a mixed source. Most is still from Queensland but there are some early peaches from Maroota in the Hawkesbury. And because we’ve waited a few weeks, supply is up and we expect the fruit to sell for under $7/Kg. However, the peaches and nectarines could be either white or yellow, or a mix- supply is not yet reliable enough to specify a colour. #boxdivvy #buttabansw #stonefruit #freshfruit #foodhub #shoplocal

15.01.2022 M A R K E T U P D A T E ! Vegetables Plenty of value across most vegetables this week: lettuce, cucumber, eggplant, carrots & beets, brassicas, beans & peas, leafy greens, herbs, potatoes, onions, pumpkins and even tomatoes are all well-priced if not downright cheap. ... There are a few exceptions: although ‘cheaper’ than last week, corn is still expensive; red capsicums will be very scarce for a few weeks; new season red onions are up; and butternut pumpkin remains a little dear. There is also some movement in avocado prices, mainly because the local Stuart Point and Comboyne season is winding up. Most fruit will soon be sourced from the Riverina and Victoria, but until it’s ramping up, we’re going to have to increase avocado prices to 80c! 09.01.2022 Say goodbye to lemons.........or not! Preserve those bad boys - the next season kicks off in April... heres how: There are many ways to keep lemons until the... season starts again in about April: freezing, dehydrating, zesting but preserving them in salt is by far the most flavoursome method. It is commonly used in North-African cooking to counterbalance the sweet fruit like dates and raisins used in stews. What you end up using for cooking is the preserved rind which has been softened by the curing process. Preserving lemons is easy, but it’s important to sterilize your jars: boil in water for 20 minutes, but the easier method is to heat them in the oven to between 70 and 90 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes. Make sure you include the lids. You need 4 Tbsp of salt for every 6-8 lemons. Thoroughly wash the lemons in cold water and pat them dry. Cut off both ends, and then slice a cross lengthwise to about 1-2 cm from the bottom Open up the lemon and sprinkle generously with salt. Put the lemons into the jar one by one, making sure to pack them tightly. Use a wooden spoon to push them down and release their juices. For extra flavour, add peppercorns, whole coriander, cumin, bay leaves or cinnamon sticks. Once packed, add remaining salt to the jar. If the lemons are not submerged in juice, top off with freshly squeezed lemon juice. They must be fully submerged, or you risk mould growth on the exposed parts. Put the jars in a cool, dark spot for 2-3 weeks before moving them into the fridge where they’ll keep for up to 12 months. Once the preserved lemons are ready to use, remove any flesh and pith leaving just the softened rind. Rinse off any remaining salt, and it’s ready for cooking. #lemons #lakemacpantry #fruitandveg #boxdivvybuttaba

06.01.2022 M A R K E T U P D A T E ! Last week, we told you how tropical cyclone Niran flattened Far North Queensland banana farms. A week on, and the damage is starting to become clearer: about $180m worth of bananas were lost, and roughly half of the North Queensland banana farms suffered damage. Inevitably banana prices will stay elevated for some time. Expect to pay around $3.50/kg this week. This week, we are selling the most amazing strawberries from DM Jennings in Cygnet, Ta...smania. Like many farmers, they are desperately short of farm labour and as conditions have been perfect for strawberries, there’s tonnes of them. To make the packing easier, they put them in 500g jumbo punnets. And get this: we can sell these beauties for $2.50 per punnet. And as they’re grown in a relatively cool climate, they’re sweet and they’ll last. Peaches and nectarines have almost finished: the white-flesh varieties are a bit so-so and we’ve taken them off, whilst the yellow-flesh variants will go for another week or so. Among the apples, you can’t beat Royal Gala on price but try out the new season Granny Smith for something different. And this week, they’ll drop below the $4 mark. Also, check out the new season Nashi pears: just 75c each. Juicy as All citrus, grapes and melons are good, with watermelons still under $1/Kg. This can’t last long Did you enjoy the Australian-grown Pomegranates? There’s heaps more where they came from. In vegetables: Plenty of good value among the vegetables, despite some short-term price hikes: This time of year, Tasmania is the best place for carrots and they have so many, they even reduced the price, for the first time in our history. They’ll be $1.75/kg and, as always, super-sweet. There is still a red cabbage glut: get yours for just $2. How about red cabbage and granny smith apples, with some cinnamon, star anise and red wine? Serve with mashed potatoes and caramelised onions, now that the weather is turning cooler Charlie Vella in Freemans Reach is starting his late season zucchini: nice and firm, just $2.75/Kg Corn, cucumbers, beans, Dutch carrots and snowpeas are all good but expect a sort-term spike for broccoli, Brussels Sprouts and cauliflower. New season Chestnuts! If you haven’t had these before, get some and roast them over charcoal, just like in Vienna in the middle of winter.
