25.01.2022 Vegetable market update Asparagus are ON for this week, and theyre going to be better than some of the ones we had last week. Still under $3 a bunch. Our hub d ordering these last week for the first time! Red capsicums are expected to spike a little for the next few weeks: work on $4.50/kg (still half price compared with Woolies)... Mushroom supply has improved, and prices should ease to around $13/kg Lebanese cucumbers have eased back further: expect to pay no more than $4.30/Kg and they will be glamour Finally, leeks have been creeping up in price but weve managed to source some local supply from Sam and Steve Grima in Horsley Park. They will have less white stalk than the ones we usually get, but they end up being way better value at around $1.40 each #boxdivvy #boxdivvycremornepointkareela

22.01.2022 Store-it Sunday. Tomatoes A debate has raged since these juicy red fruits became commonplace in our diets: do you store your tomatoes on the bench or in the fridge?... Storing tomatoes in the open - Tomatoes are warm weather foods, which continue to ripen when exposed to room temperature or higher. The general advice from most experts is that if you’re wanting to preserve the flavours and aromas of fresh tomatoes they should be kept in a cool location. The main word there was cool. If you’re living in warmer climates or don’t have air conditioning inside then ‘room temperature’ for you would be significantly higher, meaning your tomatoes will ripen and ultimately, rot faster than you’d like. Can you store tomatoes in the fridge? - Queue the shocked gasps. Yes, you can store tomatoes in the fridge. However, since most tomatoes are sold or bought a bit before their ideal ripeness to account for the changes they’ll undergo when sitting out, placing them in the fridge will actually halt their progress. While refrigeration can affect the taste, texture and aroma of your tomatoes, it can also be a saving grace if you have a hot house or have bought very ripe tomatoes that would be at risk of rotting too quickly. So in short under-ripe tomatoes are best left on the bench to develop further, while over-ripe tomatoes can be saved by popping them in the fridge. Note: It’s also worth taking into consideration the different types of tomatoes when choosing where to store them. Tomato varieties with a higher pulp to flesh ratio, such as cherry tomatoes, also tend to fare better in the fridge than fleshier counterparts like Roma tomatoes. I keep my baby truss tomatos in a bowl next to my fruit basket on the bench top & we just pick at them like cherries HOW DO YOU LIKE TO STORE YOUR TOMATO'S ? Please share your thoughts & idea

22.01.2022 WEEKLY MARKET UPDATE- Fruit Rockmelons for under $2 each Ruby grapefruit this incredible source of vitamin C for around 70c each, or under $2/kg... Packham pears for just over $2/kg Berries galore, with strawberries enjoying one of the longest Qld seasons on record because of the continued mild weather in Caboolture and Bundaberg o Strawberries are expected to stay under $2 a punnet, and blueberries under $3 a punnet Passionfruit will continue a little longer, but will remain pricey as are mangoes for the next 2 weeks. The forecast supply should still see mangoes selling between $1.50 and $2 each by the end of this month

22.01.2022 Great news - Asparagus are here, so it must be spring! Asparagus announces the start of spring, and theyre a tad early although, spring officially starts September 1. The initial asparagus supply comes from Victoria, and its not until late September that the locals start picking. ... Did you know that at the height of the growing season, it can take just 24 hours for an asparagus spear to appear seemingly out of nowhere? What you dont see is the activity underground, with asparagus plants sending runners throughout the soil which almost at random will send asparagus spears to the surface. The early supply is a bit unruly: theyre not always straight, the heads can be a little loose, but theyre crisp and tender. And at around $2.75 for a bigger-than-normal bunch, theyre good value already and the season has barely started. (We saw them at Harris Farm for over $5 for a small bunch!) Im already planning to steam mine, then serve up as a starter wrapped in prosciutto. (Or wrap them in prosciutto and roast them - check out irenamacri.com and simplyrecipes) #boxdivvycremornepointkareela #boxdivvy #asparagus #springtime #localfarmers

21.01.2022 Some tropical fruit news: Passionfruit is back from a long absence, and they’re sweet with plenty of pulp. Expect to pay around 75c each. Drinking coconut (imported) has had its supply lines restored (about $3 each)... Pineapples are still plentiful; mango supply is slowly picking up #boxdivvy #pineapples #mangoes #drinkingcoconuts #passionfruit #boxdivvycremornepoint

20.01.2022 Vegetable market update Broadbeans are now available!!! Theyre new season, young and so good to eat raw! Otherwise, saute them in some garlic & butter - yum! Asparagus from Victoria has landed too! Great value, and so much cheaper than the major supermarkets. These are really early for the season.... One of our local favourite farmers has started picking cauliflowers - theyre medium/large and only fit 8 to a case (rather than 10) Celery (also local) now comes in boxes of 6 to make it easier to get cases over the line. Great value in beans, snowpeas, zucchini, broccoli, potatoes, sweet potatoes, iceberg lettuce, tomatoes (not roma), pumpkins, and all leafy greens / herbs!

18.01.2022 Thanks @lowwastefamily (Instagram), shown below, how to store: Asparagus in my #plasticfree produce. Keep these guys in peak freshness by chopping off the ends and placing in a bit of water before putting in the fridge. This will keep them, ahem, "standing at attention" much longer. #boxdivvy... #boxdivvycremornepointkareela #asparagus See more

16.01.2022 Fruit Updates Apricot prices are crashing, and it’s only week 2 You know it’s going to be a good apricot season when there’s this much supply this early in the season. Give them enough time to ripen and they’ll taste sensational.... Did you know that apricots allegedly give you a long life expectancy? There are several stories of mountain villages across south-Asia from Kazakhstan to Pakistan where people regularly live to over 100 years, and attribute their long lives toapricots. Apparently high levels of antioxidant as well as vitamin B17 in apricots has contributed to very low cancer rates, as well as better heart health. Not only apricots are getting cheap, peaches, nectarines and cherries are following suit. Cherries have been a little tricky these past 2 weeks, with some soft fruit hitting the market. We’re navigating the supply with appropriate care and have temporarily halted the 2kg box from Boosey until the quality improves. #boxdivvycremornepoint #boxdivvy

16.01.2022 I saw this in a recipe magazine today Strawberry Sorbet Ingredients... 1kg strawberries, hulled, quartered 1/2 cup lemon juice 1 tbs pure honey Method Arrange strawberries on 2 large baking trays. Freeze for 6 hours or until frozen. Place frozen strawberries, lemon juice and honey in a food processor and process until smooth. Serve immediately or transfer to a 1l-capacity freezer-safe container. Cover and freeze for up to 1 month. Stand for 10 minute Look nice I thought & strawberries are soooo cheap at the moment #boxdivvy #boxdivvycremornepointkareela #healthyliving

14.01.2022 Friday Fruit Market update News: Australian Menindee grapes! Still a little pricey, around $12-$13 per kg, but give it a few weeks and they’ll be below $10. They look amazing though.... Earliqueen Plums! New season plums, aptly named Earliqueens. They’re early indeed - as a rule Box Divvy doesn’t touch plums until close to Christmas though exceptions are made from time to time and this Earliqueen is worth it. Peaches still suffering from Qld weather conditions () but lots of white and yellow nectarines, and apricots !! Mango prices are still forecast to drop further heading into December but haven’t they been tasting divine so far #boxdivvycremornepointkareela #boxdivvy #healthyliving

14.01.2022 Two types of mangoes for us to choose from Kensington Pride and R2E2... I’m putting both in my basket this week. Looking forward to giving the R2E2 mango a go as it’s always been the underdog in our house. Word is that they are lovely and sweet, but it’s essential that they are absolutely ripe before eating. #boxdivvy #boxdivvycremornepointkareela #mango

14.01.2022 New season ginger!! Last year’s drought has made ginger scarce and about double the normal price. Luckily, we are just getting hold of new season fresh ginger from north Queensland. It hasn’t been cured or dried, and has a milder flavour than dried ginger. ... The other big difference is its price: With dried ginger selling around $40-50/Kg, the fresh ginger is literally half-price: $24/Kg. Keep in the fridge in a sealed container. CP Hub great time to buy ginger #boxdivvycremornepoint #boxdivvy #ginger

14.01.2022 This weekly order cycle you can add shepherds breads, HARKOLAs rice, pasta, legumes, fruit n nuts black roasters coffee to your orders ! HOW GOOD IS THAT

14.01.2022 vegetable market updates: Heavy rain over the past week is now starting to impact the more sensitive greens like dill, coriander, English spinach, choi sum and others so expect to pay a little more over the next few weeks whilst stocks recover. A few other vegetable lines will have elevated prices for a few weeks as they are in between growing regions, in particular capsicums, avocados and broccoli.... On the other hand, many vegetables tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, carrots, eggplant, lettuces, cauliflower remain cheap #boxdivvycremornepointkareela #boxdivvy #healthyliving

12.01.2022 Fruit check: VALENCIA ORANGES Did you know - Valencia oranges were created in California, USA in the 1800’s. ... The original grower called them Valencias in honour of the fact that Spain at the time was the centre of the citrus world. Nowadays most Valencias are grown in Florida and Australia! While most citrus mature over autumn and winter, Valencias are the only citrus variety grown over summer! When they get a lot of sun, their skin develops a green hue by way of sunscreen protection that makes them appear unripe but in fact, the greener they are, the more sun they’ve had and the sweeter they’ll be. Valencias have an unfair reputation as "juicing oranges" because their juice keeps better (than Navel Orange juice which gets a little bitter over time) but Valencias are great to eat #boxdivvycremornepointkareela

05.01.2022 So many of us love bananas and it's not surprising that they're up there as the most popular fruit on our Hub Wishlist. And there's good reason why we love the Box Divvy bananas so much, they taste better, they're better for our environment plus they are cheaper!. 95% of Box Divvy bananas are sourced mainly from the Coffs region. Transport from Coffs (530kms from Sydney) uses about 80% fewer food miles compared with Queensland bananas, most of which are grown in Innesfai...l, south of Cairns. Because of the more humid climate in North Qld, the crop requires a fair amount of ag chemicals fungicides and pesticides mainly to maintain their good looks. That is important, as the major supermarkets only buy Qld bananas and cosmetics are considered more important than flavour and nutrition. By contrast, Coffs bananas use little or no chemicals at all. What’s more: because it’s a little cooler than Qld, it takes an extra 1-2 months to bring the fruit to maturity. That makes the Coffs bananas noticeably sweeter. That said, they may not always win a beauty contest! So lower input and transport cost plus Box Divvy’s low-cost model mean they are consistently 30-40% cheaper than supermarket bananas. #bananas #healthysnack #potassium #boxdivvy #boxdivvycremornepointkareela

02.01.2022 WEEKLY PRODUCE UPDATE: FRUIT: Apple season is almost OVER, with the previous bushfires & droughts making them even more scarce now. Most growers have nothing left to pick, and only dribs and drabs left in the apple crates for packing :( stock up ! ... We did however manage to find some good value Granny Smith apples. However, as they can be hard to get across the line in a split, weve reduced the box size to 6kgs. Pears (including nashis) are still fantastic value! Bananas and large pineapples are still cheap. Passionfruits are taking a break. Blueberry supplies have tightened a little, but strawberries are still in good supply. Were expecting the first peaches & nectarines in late October - prepare for a bumper season as they wont be exporting as much as previous years. VEGTABLES: Asparagus are down to $1.45 per bunch. Beans, snow peas and sugar snap peas are fantastic value! A local grower is having a huge harvest this season with masses of celery ($1.81), cauliflowers ($2.34), kale, silverbeet and zucchini flowers. Give it another week and hell be picking zucchini as well! Dutch carrots are down to $2 per bunch Broccoli shoots down to $2.50/kg Green cabbages are half the price of supermarkets at $1.81ea! Reminder, this weeks order includes Sheppards breads, black market roasters coffee & Harkola dried fruits & legumes - pasta & rice #boxdivvy #boxdivvycremornepointkareela #blackmarketroasters #harkola #healthyliving
