25.01.2022 It's not just the blossom that's out - Box Cottage garden is busting out all over with camellias and magnolias in full flower.

25.01.2022 Tomorrow is the biggest day in Evandale's calendar. It's the National Penny Farthing Cycle Championship and the Evandale Fair. I kid you not - Evandale is full of penny farthing enthusiasts who have come from far and wide - I am even hosting someone from NZ! Watch this space...

21.01.2022 Evandale comes alive again in March with the Glover Exhibition. This is Australia's largest landscape art prize. It's named after the Tasmanian (and Royal Academician) artist John Glover who lived near Evandale and painted an invaluable record of Early European Tasmania - fine collections in Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston, and in the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery in Hobart. Tonight's the cocktail party and award ceremony at the Horticultural Hall in Evandale, signposted by the statue of John Glover. Watch this space...

18.01.2022 For the last two weekends Evandale has been bursting at the seams as people flock to the Glover exhibition. There were 475 people at the opening cocktail party (I know, I was working the bar for the local Rotary who cater) followed by record crowds. The paintings are stunning, reflecting the beauty, the grandeur and the brooding presence of the Tasmanian landscape. Raymond Arnold was the winner with his le Barque de Dante/Macquarie Harbour Party Barge.I was thrilled to host Bruce and Fay Thrrowgood. Bruce sold his Patterdale Landscape with wire within the first hour.

17.01.2022 All the flowers that bloom in the spring tra la...Evandale is awash in blossom - plum, pear, apricot and cherry foreshadowing the fruits to come!

15.01.2022 There's been a bit of a winter lull at Box Cottage as we've been in NZ having a fantastic time reconnecting with friends & family. Now back to a wonderful Tasmanian winter - cold & frosty but lots of clear blue skies. I love the winter flowers - Daphne bhoula is the first out followed by the double Parma violets - both with gorgeous perfume. Winter flowers often have beautiful fragrance. Guests are now offered the winter treat of pears poached with leatherwood honey, cinnamon, star anise & cloves. Delicious on the porridge!

14.01.2022 It's the little things...at this time of the year, I'm entranced by the tiny spring treasures that are springing up in the woodland garden. The epimedium, the trout lilies (the yellow Pagoda) and the gorgeous white anemone blanda that I thought was lost but has appeared among the primroses...

14.01.2022 It's tulip time - the earliest of all are the scarlet Princeps I have on pots on the deck. A wonderful tulip for pots because they don't mind heating up in summer and it means you never have to lift them! There are red Ile de la France on the other deck and Red Saigon outside the apartment - anyone detect a theme here?

12.01.2022 Our local pub, the historic Clarendon Arms is under new management. While keeping the historic paintings and iconic stag's head, new owner Lydia Nettleford (of Red Feather Inn fame) opened the bar and put on wonderful courtyard lunches for the Glover weekends. From April 1 bistro meals will be served on Friday and Saturday nights along with the weekend lunches. The intention is to renovate completely and go to full service by the end of the year. Just across the park from Box Cottage, this will offer guests an exciting new dining option.

11.01.2022 At Box Cottage Apartment we pride ourselves in using Launceston's finest coffee, Ritual. It's ethically sourced from growers around the world but roasted in Launceston. At the Launceston Harvest Market on Saturdays it's a ritual (pun intended) to have a coffee and replenish supplies. I love trying new blends but often come back to the original Amelia's - a blend of washed Pacaybal from Guatemala, a washed El Roble from Costa Rica and a natural Gelana Abaya from Ethiopia. Amelia says it has a rich malty sweetness, with hints of chocolate and raspberry. That's what you'll find in the apartment!

11.01.2022 It's late autumn now & it's never been more glorious. Colours are stunning.

10.01.2022 Box Cottage sings the blues...spring is especially rich with blue flowers. At Box Cottage Apartment door, the dark and pale blue hyacinths are in flower. In the garden, there are pots of blue pansies growing next to the dark blue grape hyacinths, while the special muscari neglectum with its ink-blue caps flourishes in an urn. And in the woodland garden, there is the gorgeous azure scilla sibirica.

10.01.2022 It's spring in Evandale. Daffodils everywhere - in Box Cottage's garden, in other people's gardens, and in the beautiful old churchyard of the St Andrew's Uniting Church.

10.01.2022 Spring blossom continues with the great white cherry Tai Haiku and the stunning columnar pears (probably Chanticleer) which are everywhere in the village. Our neighbouring property has two Tai Haiku and I eye them with envy - sadly we have no more room!

09.01.2022 It's early autumn - the loveliest o times in Evandale. Keats was right - it really is the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. (Once an English teacher..We woke to mist this morning and then it burned off to show the ripening apples - espaliered Golden Delicious and Grannies, trees of Cox's Orange - all soon to be dried for the granola.

07.01.2022 Bagels at Box Cottage Apartment. After last year's trip to New York and the fabulous Barney Greengrass Deli on Amsterdam, I've been experimenting with bagels and think I've cracked it. Served with homemade Seville Orange Marmalade and Launceston's own Ritual Coffee (black or flat white) what (as they say in NYC) not to like? Available for breakfast by special request.

06.01.2022 On Saturday evening the TSO Wind and Brass Quintets performed at the Glover - a feast of art and music.

05.01.2022 The blossom bridal shower continues with our two matched weeping white cherries, Prunus Snow Fountain. This is only their third year - we took out two beautiful but too big conifers which cut off the deck from the garden. Now we have this gorgeous spring show.

05.01.2022 Well that was too quick a click - here are the Snow Fountain photographs.

04.01.2022 Glorious winter in Evandale, Tasmania. Snow on Ben Lomond; crisp, clear (and cold) weather and cosy heat pump, electric blankets and woollen quilt at Box Cottage.
