22.01.2022 Thank you for dropping off your bags and produce bags/containers for me to pack into :) As the weather starts to warm up, you may also like to leave some ice packs to help keep your produce cool. **Please make sure everything is clearly named**

22.01.2022 Apple update The apple season is starting to run out of steam and its at this tail-end of the season that last years drought and bush fires will be fe...lt most acutely. Most growers have nothing left to pick, and only dribs and drabs left in the apple crates for packing. The reduced supply will see prices going up.. Box Divvy have found some good value Granny Smith apples and have made them into 6kg boxes. Granny Smith apples this week are 66c each. 1 box through already on the splits.

22.01.2022 Box Divvy lunches are the best! Poached Hunter Valley free-range eggs, fresh baby spinach and Shepherds Charcoal Sourdough slathered with my fave Dijon mustard... 22.01.2022 Soft plastics refresher! Bet 99% of us will learn one new thing! Step 1 - By now, most of us Australians know that #softplastics goes into those #redcycl...e bins outside #Woolworths + #Coles. There is actually quite a bit that can go in there! Generally, if it is scrunchable, it is #softplastic. Deliver it as clean and dry as possible. Here is a complete list: https://www.redcycle.net.au/what-to-redcycle/ It helps to keep a dedicated box or bag somewhere in the house that is designated for soft plastics. We have a big bucket we throw in all our soft plastic. Once the box is full of soft plastics, I pop in the back of car, or right next to the front door. That way I remember to take in on the next trip to Woolworths/Coles to pop in the #redcycle bin. Oh, and a little weird thing I do is I post pictures of our shrinking red bin to my wider FB clan sometimes. Because no one really believes how much this one habit reduces it until they see this picture! And once we see our red bin shrinking, it creates an energy of its own! As much as we can, we should avoid plastic. Have a few reusable pouches+ bags with you. But the reality is we will always have some plastic, and so the recycling details are important. Step 2. AND this is really important! Australia (councils, schools, clubs, associations, businesses, individuals) need to support recycled products by committing to a % of their 2021 budget to be spent on products made from recycled materials. The only way this works is if we buy recycled products made from the goods we recycle. Here is a template to talk to your local councils about using your rates to buy more recycled products: https://www.facebook.com/samantha.pereirasachdev/posts/10222735705237101 So let’s un-plastic our Australian landfills and Australian waterways together. Many Australians aren’t aware of these finer details, so let’s help each other learn. Please tap onto my post (which is set to public) and share this as widely as possible #reducingwasteinaustralia #australianrecyclingtip #SustainableAustralia #australiashowushowemptyyourredbinis

20.01.2022 Lunch for one! A hearty feed for a Box Divvy Wednesday, in one pan! I don't get much of a break all afternoon, so I eat up at lunch. Box Divvy mushroom, baby truss tomato, eggs, rainbow chard, with avocado and caramelised onions I made last fortnight. Yum yum!

20.01.2022 This is our friendship out-of-box this week. We ran out of boxes so I snapped a photo before bagging them up for pickup later this arvo. As always, our group do...nates surplus produce and it's wonderful to see a little goes a long way. Special thank-you to Sarah B for the sourdough bread, Michelle R for the eggs, Deb C for the extra cucumbers, and I've added Chinese broccoli, mandarins, and onions. #givealittlelove #BoxDivvyBerowraHeightsAlan #BDberowraheightsALANfriendshipbox #ilovemyboxdivvy

19.01.2022 That's it, from now on I'm hulling and freezing all my berries when I get them! This is the perfect summer smoothie! A couple frozen bananas, some frozen stra...wberries, a couple scoops of biodynamic yogurt, a little oat milk and a dash of vanilla - the result is like a (guilt-free) icecream shake. YUM!

19.01.2022 This is interesting ... the idea of consciously doing a food audit. I’m guessing you’d need to add to your diary at days end what you ate and from where. The Sydney Basin and Backyard Box Divvy growers make up 50-70% of vegetables (seasonally) and fruit approx 20%. Food miles are reduced where we can . Bananas from Coffs Harbour rather than Qld (seasonally). Eating in season is sooooo good.... #eatseasonally #supportlocal #foodhubs

17.01.2022 Box Divvy Longueville member Kate Somers says: New season ginger Last year’s drought has made ginger scarce and about double the normal price. ... Luckily, we are just getting hold of new season fresh ginger from north Queensland. It hasn’t been cured or dried, and has a milder flavour than dried ginger. The other big difference is its price: with dried ginger selling around $40-50/Kg, the fresh ginger is literally half-price: $24/Kg. Keep in the fridge in a sealed container. #longueville

17.01.2022 Make room for a new mushroom! Enoki mushrooms In addition to Oyster and Shiitake mushrooms both of which are locally grown we are now offering Enoki mushr...ooms. 16.01.2022 Food Security: it’s a thin line Australians are used to having food in abundance: shops, farmers markets, delivery services, Box Divvy there is no shortage i...n food options. Not only is Australia as a nation self-sufficient, we export 65% of all our food which makes us just one of about a dozen countries in the world who are self-sufficient. It’s easy to take this for granted, but all it takes are some natural (or man-made) disasters to change the equation. To illustrate, consider two reports from the some of the wealthiest countries in the world: Last week, some 10,000 cars queued up at a Foodbank in San Antonio, Texas for a 50kg food parcel. Half the people who queued did so for the first time a continued fall-out from the COVID crisis that has caused 20 million Americans to lose their jobs, and 250,000 to lose their lives. These scenes are repeated at hundreds of Foodbanks across the USA. Meanwhile, the Brexit deadline is looming in the UK, and there is growing concern of food shortages that could last weeks or even months, according to The Guardian. The UK relies on Europe for much of its fresh food, and there is a growing risk of delays at the border not so good for perishable food. Coupled with very little spare warehouse capacity, it is feasible that food prices will rise sharply and leave many Britons going hungry at a time (the middle of winter) when virtually no fresh produce is picked locally. Drought, floods, bushfires, climate change, pandemics, you name it: all of these factors can impact on our food supply, which is why Box Divvy has adopted a diversification strategy: at the same time as we help local growers to become more resilient, we are expanding the amount of produce we can source from backyard growers across the Sydney suburbs. Mums, dads, kids, community gardens and schools are starting to recognise the risk, and expanding their food production. Please check out the Backyard Growers Box Divvy Facebook page, managed by Jaq our Freeranger in Panania. If you want to get involved and start supplying your produce to local Box Divvy hubs, please touch base with Jaq. #boxdivvy

14.01.2022 Here's a snapshot of some of our growers and what they are picking this week! Charlie Vella in Freemans Reach has got record quantities of celery ($1.81)..., cauliflowers ($2.34), kale, silverbeet and zucchini flowers. Give it another week and hell be picking zucchini as well. The Grimas in Horsley Park will be bringing in loads of Dutch carrots decent bunches for just $2. Simon Chong is predicting a big drop in shallot prices, from over $2 a bunch last week to $1.70 and probably lower over the coming week or so. Gerard Saad in Wilberforce has broccoli shoots for $2.50/kg, and has green cabbages at half the price of supermarkets at $1.81 each. #boxdivvy #supportlocal #freshfood #localgrown #innerwest

10.01.2022 Have you seen R2E2 mangoes in the marketplace? These are a new option available through Box Divvy! They have lemon-yellow flesh which has a sweet, mild flavour ...and deep orange skin tinged with an orange-red blush, and are a mid-season variety. What’s in a name? R2E2 sounds like a name Einstein could have come up with, but in actual fact it means Row 2 Experiment 2. (Did you know that WD40 stands for Water Displacement, attempt number 40?). When do I eat the R2E2? Make sure they are ripe probably in another 2-4 days, or even longer: their shelf life is better than Kensington Pride, which is why they are widely exported.

09.01.2022 More on Bananas. Bananas are remarkably healthy. They provide lots of energy, but still have a lower GI than sweet potatoes and pumpkin. That means blood su...gar rises only gradually after eating a banana. They are also full of vitamin B6 which is important for the manufacture of red blood cells. Also contain potassium which is good for brain development and maintaining healthy blood pressure. Did we mention they’re fat-free and cholesterol-free? 06.01.2022 The Mediterranean diet reflected the lifestyle of Greek and Italian peasants in the 1900’s: "It was a poor man's diet. There wasn't a lot of meat. There was a b...it of fish because fish was more available but primarily they subsisted on plant foods and legumes as their main source of proteins, and fermented dairy foods like yoghurt," according to Professor Itsiopoulos, head of School of Allied Health and Professor of Nutrition at La Trobe University. Diabetes and heart disease among this population was almost non-existent. Rich or poor, anyone can adopt the Mediterranean lifestyle and with Box Divvy, anyone can afford the fresh produce that is at the core of it. Check it out See more

05.01.2022 Valencia Oranges: Valencia oranges were created in (get this) California, US back in the 1800’s. OK, so not really in Valencia. The original grower called them... Valencias in honour of the fact that Spain at the time was the centre of the citrus world. Nowadays most Valencias are grown in Florida and Australia! Most citrus matures over autumn and winter, but Valencias are the only citrus variety grown over summer. When they get a lot of sun, their skin develops a green hue by way of sunscreen protection that makes them appear unripe but in fact, the greener they are, the more sun they’ve had and the sweeter they’ll be. Valencias have an unfair reputation as ‘juicing oranges’. The reason is that their juice keeps better than Navel juice which gets a little bitter over time. But the fact they produce better orange juice doesn’t mean they’re not great to eat as a hand orange! And to give you one more reason: they’ve just come down to $1.53/Kg. At that price, you can juice them and have ‘m too!

05.01.2022 We are so excited for these lychees today!

04.01.2022 Smashed avocado on toast is everywhere these days but in my opinion this wins hands down. I didn't have any rocket so substituted i...t with a handful of baby spinach and some fresh basil. 02.01.2022 One thing I've learnt to do better since joining Box Divvy is to store my fresh produce properly. A few weeks back I went a bit overboard and ordered of ...brussels sprouts. 02.01.2022 For those looking for ideas as to how to enjoy the blood oranges that are in our upcoming starter boxes. Any citrus, olive oil and yoghurt cake: Ingredients... Upside down layer: 120g unsalted butter 100g plus 2 tablespoons of sugar 2 large oranges, lemons or tangelos sliced thinly Cake: 313g plain flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 large eggs 1 cup (236 ml) olive oil 1 cup (227g) Greek yogurt 1 cup (200g) sugar Preheat oven to 170 degrees Celsius. Grease and line the bottom of a 22cm cake tin Make upside down layer by melting butter in medium saucepan. When melted add sugar with 2 tablespoons of water and whisk until smooth and glossy. Pour into prepared pan and smooth into an even layer to cover the bottom. Place pan in freezer until you are ready to pour cake batter into pan. Toss citrus slices with 2 tablespoons of the sugar and leave for 10 mins. Sift dry ingredients into large bowl. Combine eggs and olive oil in another large bowl and whisk until smooth. Add yoghurt and sugar and combine until smooth. Make a well in the centre of dry ingredients and fold the wet ingredients in 3 additions, folding in each addition until no dry bits remain. Take cake pan out of freezer and lay citrus slices over the bottom. Pour cake batter over slices. Bake for about 1 hour until cake tester inserted into centre comes out with only a few moist crumbs. Transfer to cooling rack and let cool for 15 mins. Invert cake onto serving platter and remove baking paper if stuck. Allow to further cool for 1 hour before serving.

02.01.2022 Here's some inspiration for dinner! Swap out your pastry for finely sliced potatoes or sweet potatoes, bake them in a hot oven for 15 mins (until tender) and ...then do overlapping layers in a greased pie dish. My filling is a ridiculously easy one - sauteed onions & chopped silverbeet, cooled for 10mins (and drained), then mixed with crumbled feta, beaten eggs, grated parmesan, sea-salt, pepper and #Belicious Lemon Herb Mix! Bake for 20mins, and allow to set on the bench for 20mins before serving. Voila!

02.01.2022 Hey inner-westies, for anyone who doesn't know, I run a weekly fruit and veg co-op (through https://www.boxdivvy.com/) which has some space in it if anyone woul...d like to join! Some of the benefits: - we order direct with the farmers so they receive closer to 70-80c per dollar spent (whereas Woolies is something like 10c) - Generally 30-40% cheaper than supermarkets - Almost all local, reducing your food miles - Way less packaging (only for things that come in punnets really) - produce is AMAZING quality All the ordering is done online so there's full transparency over what you get and what it costs. If you don't like anything you can opt out of it (and if you want extra there's a way to do that too). Boxes are packed and can be collected from my place in Marrickville on Wednesdays. Send me a message if your're interested!
