21.01.2022 Backyard Growers supplying Box Divvy One of Box Divvy’s aims this year is to start neighbours growing and selling into their local Box Divvy Food Hubs. Our Hubster in Farmborough Heights is one of our first home growers who will sell her wonderful limes, red chard, bay leaves and red chilli. We hope that backyard growers will eventually contribute 10-20% of our food supply, which will bolster food security at a time of rapid climate change and possible future pandemics. The w...ay to change things is to let communities run it. Backyard growers can apply to supply their produce to one or more hubs in a region by emailing us ([email protected]). Part of the requirements is to have your soil tested for the presence of heavy metals by the VegeSafe program. In order to keep the program running and accessible to all, the VegeSafe program, a not-for-profit, needs your support. We ask that you pay $40 to cover the costs of the soil analysis, time involved, data privacy security and laboratory consumables. Once you receive the certificate, we will refund you $20. You can email receipt along with a soil health report. To get your soil tested, please visit https://research.science.mq.edu.au/vege/how-to-participate/

20.01.2022 When your bananas need a fruit bowl all to themselves I find having it readily available and on the kitchen bench it’s the first thing my kids see when heading to the kitchen for a snack, and without them realizing they tend to go for it first, before other snacky items like chips or muesli bars All this delicious fruit cost just over $20 and will be the main snacks throughout the day for my 4 cheeky monkeys.... And if by some miracle it isn’t all eaten at the end of the week the produce is so fresh most of it lasts 2 weeks or sometimes longer We still have a few spots left in our Wednesday hub, if your interested in trying the fresh Box Divvy produce (and support local farmers - bonus!) click on the link below to register https://app.boxdivvy.com.au/register/hub/134 #boxdivvy #supportlocal #aussiegrown #lowfoodmiles #lesspackaging

18.01.2022 Breakfast!! Arguably the most important meal of the day. But why is it considered so important? As the name suggests, breakfast breaks the overnight fasting period. It replenishes your supply of glucose to boost your energy levels and alertness, while also providing other essential nutrients required for good health. Many studies have shown the health benefits of eating breakfast. It improves your energy levels and ability to concentrate in the short term, and can help with b...etter weight management, reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease in the long term. This has been my go to breakfast lately: - 1 slice of Shepherds Bakery Sourdough Wholegrain 7-Grains toast - 1/2 and avocado - 1-2 teaspoons of Belicious Dukkah, and - 2 boiled eggs (sometimes runny sometimes hard depending on whether or not I’m paying attention to how long I’ve cooked them ). Made up completely by delicious Box Divvy Produce and costing around $2.05!!! If your interested in trying Box Divvy click on the link below and register for my hub, but hurry there’s only a couple of spots left https://app.boxdivvy.com.au/register/hub/134

11.01.2022 Store-it Sunday. Each week we will look at ways of storing various Box Divvy produce to keep it fresh for longer. This week we are featuring: Corn... First thing’s first: Don’t remove the husk until you absolutely have to. Corn starts to dry out and become starchy as soon as it’s harvested. Exposing the sensitive kernels to air will only speed up those processes. It’s best to use your corn the day you buy or harvest it. However, you can keep it fresh longer by storing it, unwashed and unpeeled, in a sealed plastic bag in the crisper drawer of your fridge. This’ll keep it usable for about five to seven days. If you’ve already peeled your corn, follow the same stepsbut try to consume it in the next day or two. How to Store Cooked Corn Wrap cooked corn (on or off the cob) in aluminum foil and then place in an airtight container. Store in the fridge for three to five days. How to Freeze Corn If you want to keep corn tasty and safe-to-eat for longer, you may want to consider freezing it. To freeze corn on the cob: 1. Shuck and blanch the corn. Don’t skip this step, even if you’re short on time. Blanching corn before freezing helps preserve its yellow color and prevents the need to cook it after defrosting. 2. Cut the corn off the cob. Use a serrated knife to saw the kernels off the cob and onto a kitchen towel. 3. Bag the corn. Place in a zip-top bag, label with the date and freeze up to a year.

04.01.2022 Let's talk EGGS. What exactly does free range mean? It may not be what you egg-spect! The main way to tell the difference between brands of free range eggs i...s by comparing the stocking density or 'hens per hectare'. In 2017 the government introduced laws to standardise 'free range' as a maximum of 10,000 hens per hectare. It's hard to picture what they actually looks like, but according to John Dunn of Egg Farmers of Australia, it's like "four chooks on the back of a ute, or four chooks on a double bed, or one per square metre,". Which is actually not a lot of room to live. So you definitely don't want to imagine what non-free range conditions are like! Most 'free range' egg brands at the supermarkets have a stocking density of 10,000 hens per hectare. The CSIRO Model Code of Practice challenges this 10,000 per hectare law, saying that maximum of 1500 hens per hectare is more truely 'free range' and is closer to what consumers actually think free range should be. So how do the two egg suppliers we support through Box Divvy measure up? Hunter Valley Eggs (600g) have a stocking density of 950 hens per hectare. Just $4.18 a dozen! Jones Brothers Eggs (700g) from Eugowra in Central West NSW, about an hour past Orange have a stocking density of 1500 hens per hectare. Just $5.87 a dozen! Both of them meet the CSIRO Model Code of Practice (you can see them on the list in the Choice article in the comments) and for an excellent price compared to what's available at the supermarket! So if you can't have your own backyard chooks, Box Divvy has you covered with the next best thing! *See the Choice article in the comments for more info. #freerangeeggs #eggs #happyhens #boxdivvy #buysharesave #lalorpark
04.01.2022 Some great advice to get the most out of Box Divvy! Thanks BD North Turramurra.
01.01.2022 Zucchini Flowers from Charlie Vella Charlie’s Freemans Reach farm has traditionally produced zucchini flowers, the bulk of which are sold to restaurants but they’re not buying much these days. Just our luck! He’s selling them in a tray of 50, and we’re divvying them in serves of 6 flowers. They are great for stuffing with anything from ricotta, to fetta and basil, and then deep-fry them in some batter.'... They’re $4.76 per serve, which works out at 80c each. Almost certainly the cheapest zucchini flowers in Sydney.
