24.01.2022 Included in this weeks starting order I do hope you will try them Eschalots - you may wonder what to use them for and why you would sometimes use them instead of brown onions? They are sweeter than brown onions and roast beautifully. ... Eschalots also appear in a lot of Ottolenghi’s recipes and Asian salads. I’ve made this baked rice recipe a lot and would LOVE to share it if you haven’t already discovered it. Brilliant side dish for fish/meat and so easy to prepare. I’m hoping eschalots will appear in our splits regularly over the summer , they’re so handy to have on hand (see recipe in earlier post for eg !) and the best thing is that they are at least half the price of eschalots in HF and local supermarkets. And.....they’re local - grown in Leppington! If stored in a cool dry place, they last for weeks and weeks so I’m never fussed about having them in my pantry as a staple. Thanks BD for the fresh ingredients (and the rice): Cherry or baby truss tomatoes Eschalots Coriander Garlic Thyme With the olive oil and the cinnamon sticks, that’s it!! #boxdivvychatswood #boxdivvycremornepointkareela #communityboxsharing #ottolenghisimple #ottolenghibakedrice

21.01.2022 Cremorne Point hub take a look at these tips from our sister @ Terrey hills box divvy

19.01.2022 Some BIG price fall Although we’d love to see mangoes and cherries come down in price , there are nevertheless some dramatic price falls for other produce lines this week: corn and beans fell by 60%-70% (and corn is now about 85-90c a cob), whilst there were smaller falls for truss tomatoes, rainbow carrots, passionfruit, cauliflowers and others. Many of these are now looking very cheap - PLEASE TAKE A LOOK ONLINE ... New season delights Whilst Blueberries have temporarily tightened up, try some delicious Blackberries instead. Surprisingly sweet Meanwhile our regular strawberry grower near Monbulk in Vic is taking a break in between patches which gives us a chance to try out some of the more premium berries. They’re extra large, super-sweet and should be around $3.40 per punnet. Depending on your feedback, we may continue with this more premium fruit even after the regular berries have returned. Let us know what you think Can you get a bigger Flavour Bomb than lychees?? They’re only just starting, but they pack a punch. Still $23/Kg, but they will drop in the lead-up to Christmas.

19.01.2022 New product available through Shepherd’s Bakery Nice Kitty a range of deliciously healthy snacks made of dates, nuts and seeds. Made by hand, they’re vegan, raw, gluten-free and contain no processed sugar, preservatives or any other artificial ingredients. ... Great timing for back to school/work snacks - let’s try some this week!

18.01.2022 New season ginger!! Last year’s drought has made ginger scarce and about double the normal price. Luckily, we are just getting hold of new season fresh ginger from north Queensland. It hasn’t been cured or dried, and has a milder flavour than dried ginger. ... The other big difference is its price: With dried ginger selling around $40-50/Kg, the fresh ginger is literally half-price: $24/Kg. Keep in the fridge in a sealed container. CP Hub great time to buy ginger #boxdivvycremornepoint #boxdivvy #ginger

18.01.2022 Market update on fruit Fruity news - * There's a new apple variety on the menu - Modi - which is crisp and sweet. It's currently the best value, due to a cancelled export order, at just over $3/kg. I have added this to our starting order . ... *Kensington Pride mangoes are down to $2.27, and will be down to $2 in a week or so. *Afourer mandarins are still great eating and great value at $2/kg *Berries are excellent *Watermelons are a little sweeter and cheaper at under $1.50/kg *Pineapples and any citrus are all great value *Charlie Vella, in Freemans Reach, has masses of rhubarb at under $3 a bunch #boxdivvy #boxdivvycremornepointkareela

16.01.2022 Market News - plenty of supply coming our way this week and by eating loads of fresh fruits and veg, we are actually helping farmers shift a mountain of great produce. FRUIT Kensington Pride mangoes are now starting to show up in good numbers and prices have dropped below $3/each. Should keep going down ... Abundance of Afourer mandarins, in such volume that prices have dropped below $2/Kg. All citrus is going strong still, with lemons dropping back under $3/Kg. Strawberries are from WA this week and will be around $2 punnet, and blueberries around $3. Superb raspberries: just $4.76 a punnet and they taste just amazing. Watermelons are back! They’re small well, around 3-4kg each so they’ll fit in your fridge once you halve them, and they’re just $1.65/Kg. Pear season is ending - the last Packham, Nashi and Corella pears to enjoy. I’m excited about the start of the summer fruit - bring it on!! #boxdivvy #boxdivvycremornepointkareela

14.01.2022 Market update In Fruit, we have: New season Sugar Plums little ovals of explosive sweetness, less than half than the $11-12/Kg you’ll pay in supermarkets Tasmanian Cherries will finish up this week: they’re very large and sweet, but a little pricier at around $29/Kg Fresh Figs at half price versus last week New season Lemons from Queensland are also about half price compared with a few weeks ago so we’ve increased the box size to about 7-8 kgs... This is the last week of the Pink Lady apples but go for the Royal Gala anyway: more crunch for your buck, at just over $4/Kg Packham pears are off until next year, but the Williams are excellent eating and good value Berries are at a low ebb, but melons are great and stone fruit peaches, nectarines and plums See more

11.01.2022 Is it really only a month to Christmas? I love this simple recipe for Cranberry Pecan Relish - great for ALFRESHCO dining during the festive season & Christmas lunch for your turkey & glazed ham Cranberry Pecan Relish - Recipe -- Once Upon a Chef... Flavored with maple syrup, orange zest, and balsamic vinegar, this nutty cranberry relish is a delicious alternative to cranberry sauce. Fresh Cranberries are generally unavailable in Australia but you can substitute dried ones - HARKOLA in This weeks order cycle INGREDIENTS About 3 cups fresh cranberries or dried 1 cup pure maple syrup (1/2 cup for Australian taste) 1/2 cup chopped pecans - order this week in pantry items 1 teaspoon grated orange zest 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar INSTRUCTIONS Combine the cranberries and syrup in a medium saucepan, and bring to a boil. Let them bubble gently, stirring often until the skins on the cranberries have all split and the mixture has thickened, 4 to 5 minutes (cover the pan with a lid if the cranberries splatter). While the berries are cooking, put the pecans in a small, dry skillet, and stir them over medium heat until they are fragrant and lightly toasted, 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to a plate to cool. When the cranberry mixture has thickened, take it off the heat and stir in the orange zest, vinegar, and pecans. Mix well. Serve warm or transfer to a covered container and chill. Make-Ahead/Freezing Instructions: The relish will keep for 10 days in a covered container in the refrigerator. It can also be frozen for up to two months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before using.

09.01.2022 Fruit Updates Apricot prices are crashing, and it’s only week 2 You know it’s going to be a good apricot season when there’s this much supply this early in the season. Give them enough time to ripen and they’ll taste sensational.... Did you know that apricots allegedly give you a long life expectancy? There are several stories of mountain villages across south-Asia from Kazakhstan to Pakistan where people regularly live to over 100 years, and attribute their long lives toapricots. Apparently high levels of antioxidant as well as vitamin B17 in apricots has contributed to very low cancer rates, as well as better heart health. Not only apricots are getting cheap, peaches, nectarines and cherries are following suit. Cherries have been a little tricky these past 2 weeks, with some soft fruit hitting the market. We’re navigating the supply with appropriate care and have temporarily halted the 2kg box from Boosey until the quality improves. #boxdivvycremornepoint #boxdivvy

09.01.2022 vegetable market updates: Heavy rain over the past week is now starting to impact the more sensitive greens like dill, coriander, English spinach, choi sum and others so expect to pay a little more over the next few weeks whilst stocks recover. A few other vegetable lines will have elevated prices for a few weeks as they are in between growing regions, in particular capsicums, avocados and broccoli.... On the other hand, many vegetables tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, carrots, eggplant, lettuces, cauliflower remain cheap #boxdivvycremornepointkareela #boxdivvy #healthyliving

09.01.2022 WEEKLY MARKET UPDATE- Fruit Rockmelons for under $2 each Ruby grapefruit this incredible source of vitamin C for around 70c each, or under $2/kg... Packham pears for just over $2/kg Berries galore, with strawberries enjoying one of the longest Qld seasons on record because of the continued mild weather in Caboolture and Bundaberg o Strawberries are expected to stay under $2 a punnet, and blueberries under $3 a punnet Passionfruit will continue a little longer, but will remain pricey as are mangoes for the next 2 weeks. The forecast supply should still see mangoes selling between $1.50 and $2 each by the end of this month

07.01.2022 We aren’t going to be short of local veggies this week!! VEGETABLE MARKET UPDATE: * Beans and peas continue to be super-cheap, with snowpeas dropping to $6.80/kg local supply from Kim and Laks at Golden Fields (did you notice they are $18/Kg in supermarkets)... * Golden Fields is also supplying us with Lebanese cucumber: expect to pay $2.60/kg. 06.01.2022 Has anyone got any storage tips to share ? Would love to know how you store your fresh herbs ! A few CP BD members recently asked me about storing my weekly fresh fruit & veggies . Here are some pics of how I store my weekly order ! PLEASE SHARE YOU STORAGE EXAMPLES

06.01.2022 WEEKLY PRODUCE UPDATE: FRUIT: Apple season is almost OVER, with the previous bushfires & droughts making them even more scarce now. Most growers have nothing left to pick, and only dribs and drabs left in the apple crates for packing :( stock up ! ... We did however manage to find some good value Granny Smith apples. However, as they can be hard to get across the line in a split, we’ve reduced the box size to 6kgs. Pears (including nashis) are still fantastic value! Bananas and large pineapples are still cheap. Passionfruits are taking a break. Blueberry supplies have tightened a little, but strawberries are still in good supply. We're expecting the first peaches & nectarines in late October - prepare for a bumper season as they wont be exporting as much as previous years. VEGTABLES: Asparagus are down to $1.45 per bunch. Beans, snow peas and sugar snap peas are fantastic value! A local grower is having a huge harvest this season with masses of celery ($1.81), cauliflowers ($2.34), kale, silverbeet and zucchini flowers. Give it another week and he’ll be picking zucchini as well! Dutch carrots are down to $2 per bunch Broccoli shoots down to $2.50/kg Green cabbages are half the price of supermarkets at $1.81ea! Reminder, this weeks order includes Sheppards breads, black market roasters coffee & Harkola dried fruits & legumes - pasta & rice #boxdivvy #boxdivvycremornepointkareela #blackmarketroasters #harkola #healthyliving

06.01.2022 So many of us love bananas and it's not surprising that they're up there as the most popular fruit on our Hub Wishlist. And there's good reason why we love the Box Divvy bananas so much, they taste better, they're better for our environment plus they are cheaper!. 95% of Box Divvy bananas are sourced mainly from the Coffs region. Transport from Coffs (530kms from Sydney) uses about 80% fewer food miles compared with Queensland bananas, most of which are grown in Innesfai...l, south of Cairns. Because of the more humid climate in North Qld, the crop requires a fair amount of ag chemicals fungicides and pesticides mainly to maintain their good looks. That is important, as the major supermarkets only buy Qld bananas and cosmetics are considered more important than flavour and nutrition. By contrast, Coffs bananas use little or no chemicals at all. What’s more: because it’s a little cooler than Qld, it takes an extra 1-2 months to bring the fruit to maturity. That makes the Coffs bananas noticeably sweeter. That said, they may not always win a beauty contest! So lower input and transport cost plus Box Divvy’s low-cost model mean they are consistently 30-40% cheaper than supermarket bananas. #bananas #healthysnack #potassium #boxdivvy #boxdivvycremornepointkareela

03.01.2022 Two types of mangoes for us to choose from Kensington Pride and R2E2... I’m putting both in my basket this week. Looking forward to giving the R2E2 mango a go as it’s always been the underdog in our house. Word is that they are lovely and sweet, but it’s essential that they are absolutely ripe before eating. #boxdivvy #boxdivvycremornepointkareela #mango

03.01.2022 Store-it Sunday. Tomatoes A debate has raged since these juicy red fruits became commonplace in our diets: do you store your tomatoes on the bench or in the fridge?... Storing tomatoes in the open - Tomatoes are warm weather foods, which continue to ripen when exposed to room temperature or higher. The general advice from most experts is that if you’re wanting to preserve the flavours and aromas of fresh tomatoes they should be kept in a cool location. The main word there was cool. If you’re living in warmer climates or don’t have air conditioning inside then ‘room temperature’ for you would be significantly higher, meaning your tomatoes will ripen and ultimately, rot faster than you’d like. Can you store tomatoes in the fridge? - Queue the shocked gasps. Yes, you can store tomatoes in the fridge. However, since most tomatoes are sold or bought a bit before their ideal ripeness to account for the changes they’ll undergo when sitting out, placing them in the fridge will actually halt their progress. While refrigeration can affect the taste, texture and aroma of your tomatoes, it can also be a saving grace if you have a hot house or have bought very ripe tomatoes that would be at risk of rotting too quickly. So in short under-ripe tomatoes are best left on the bench to develop further, while over-ripe tomatoes can be saved by popping them in the fridge. Note: It’s also worth taking into consideration the different types of tomatoes when choosing where to store them. Tomato varieties with a higher pulp to flesh ratio, such as cherry tomatoes, also tend to fare better in the fridge than fleshier counterparts like Roma tomatoes. I keep my baby truss tomatos in a bowl next to my fruit basket on the bench top & we just pick at them like cherries HOW DO YOU LIKE TO STORE YOUR TOMATO'S ? Please share your thoughts & idea

02.01.2022 Fruit check: VALENCIA ORANGES Did you know - Valencia oranges were created in California, USA in the 1800’s. ... The original grower called them Valencias in honour of the fact that Spain at the time was the centre of the citrus world. Nowadays most Valencias are grown in Florida and Australia! While most citrus mature over autumn and winter, Valencias are the only citrus variety grown over summer! When they get a lot of sun, their skin develops a green hue by way of sunscreen protection that makes them appear unripe but in fact, the greener they are, the more sun they’ve had and the sweeter they’ll be. Valencias have an unfair reputation as "juicing oranges" because their juice keeps better (than Navel Orange juice which gets a little bitter over time) but Valencias are great to eat #boxdivvycremornepointkareela

02.01.2022 Friday Fruit Market update News: Australian Menindee grapes! Still a little pricey, around $12-$13 per kg, but give it a few weeks and they’ll be below $10. They look amazing though.... Earliqueen Plums! New season plums, aptly named Earliqueens. They’re early indeed - as a rule Box Divvy doesn’t touch plums until close to Christmas though exceptions are made from time to time and this Earliqueen is worth it. Peaches still suffering from Qld weather conditions () but lots of white and yellow nectarines, and apricots !! Mango prices are still forecast to drop further heading into December but haven’t they been tasting divine so far #boxdivvycremornepointkareela #boxdivvy #healthyliving
