18.01.2022 NEW SEASON Globe Artichoke Did you know that artichokes are related to thistles, sunflowers and dahlias? They produce beautiful corn-blue flowers, butat that point, they’ve also become inedible. So, you want to pick them before they start flowering. They grow prolifically all-around Sydney’s fringe, most likely brought in by Italian and Maltese growers such as Paul Calleja in Warragamba.... The local artichoke season runs from September to December, when dozens of growers from all over the Sydney basin seem to be proudly showing off their artichokes. They come in 2 colours: green and purple. There is no difference in flavour, but the purple artichoke tends to be a little dearer as they are considered prettier whilst the supply is more limited than of the green variety.

18.01.2022 Sourdough - slow fermented bread Box Divvy offers breads from Shepherd's Artisan Bakery in Sefton. Their sourdough is made without commercial yeast, refined sugar, dairy or egg products and is fermented for 8-12 hours using organic flour sourced from local farmers. Shepherd's don’t add any preservatives, additives, colouring or emulsifiers to enhance the bread or give it a longer shelf life. Sourdough.... - the oldest and most original form of leavened bread. ... - the sour taste itself comes from the lactic acid produced by the lactobacillus. - the lactobacillus helps the bread last longer without spoiling as most microbes can’t handle the acidic environment - more digestible than regular bread because the fermentation process breaks down gluten that can cause bloating and other digestive problems. - the lactic acid in sourdough bread helps your body to absorb more of the nutrients from sourdough bread than you would from regular breads. - diabetics can also benefit as it has a low GI See more

Did you know: - 1 cup contains 75% of daily vitamin C! - Cauliflower is white because its thick leaves surround it while growing, protecting it from the sun. 11.01.2022 NEW ENOKI MUSHROOMS In addition to Oyster and Shiitake mushrooms both of which are locally grown we are now offering Enoki mushrooms. Enoki mushrooms are at their best when used in East Asian dishes such as soups, noodle dishes, stir-frys, and salads. They can be eaten raw or cooked but should be cleaned. Discard any stems that are discoloured or slimy, and rinse under cold water. After that, cut off the woody 'stem'. Store in paper bag for up to a week.... https://thewoksoflife.com/enoki-mushrooms-garlic-scallion-/

11.01.2022 Pineapples are in our starter box this Thursday. Sweet and juicy, chock full of Vitamin C, how delicious does this look?! https://www.taste.com.au//pineapple-coconut-tart-/xe8cdohz

11.01.2022 Box Divvy Avocados will usually come to you hard as they have just been picked and not ‘gassed’ in order to ripen them. Most supermarket avocados are gassed with ethylene to get them ‘just right’ when they go onto the shelf. However, this will shorten its life: they tend to go brown within a few days of purchasing. Box Divvy avocadoes are left to ripen naturally. Whilst you might have to wait a little, they’ll then last a week.

10.01.2022 Box Divvy goes Coff Harbour Bananas! 95% of Box Divvy bananas are sourced mainly from the Coffs region from Scotts Head to Woolgoolga and some from northern NSW around Murwillumbah. Transport from Coffs (530kms from Sydney) uses about 80% fewer food miles compared with QLD bananas, most of which are grown in Innesfail, south of Cairns. Because of the more humid climate in NQLD, the crop requires a fair amount of ag chemicals fungicides and pesticides mainly to maintai...n their good looks. That is important, as the major supermarkets only buy QLD bananas and cosmetics are considered more important than flavour and nutrition. By contrast, Coffs bananas use little or no chemicals at all. What’s more: because it’s a little cooler than QLD, it takes an extra 1-2 months to bring the fruit to maturity. That makes the Coffs bananas noticeably sweeter. That said, they may not always win a beauty contest! Lower input and transport cost plus Box Divvy’s low-cost model mean they are consistently 30-40% cheaper than supermarket bananas. 10.01.2022 FRUIT Rockmelon for under $2 ea Ruby grapefruit for around 70c each, or under $2kg Packham pears for just over $2kg Berries, with strawberries enjoying one of the longest Qld seasons on record because of continued mild weather in Caboolture and Bundaberg & expected to stay under $2 a punnet, and blueberries under $3 a punnet ... Passionfruit will continue a little longer, but will remain pricey as are mangoes for the next 2 weeks. The forecast supply should see mangoes selling between $1.50 and $2 each by the end of this month VEGGIES DOWN Kim from Golden Fields tells us he’ll have a lot of sugarsnap peas this week, so he’s reduced the price to $10kg. Asparagus will be around $1.80 a bunch Green beans should be no more than $2.70 JAP pumpkins at less than $1kg Charlie Vella has; Cauliflowers at $2.55, Iceberg just $1.25, medium-sized Wombok for $1.87 (probably the last week before Charlie takes a break, the new patch won’t be ready until October), both silverbeet and green kale at $1.47 a bunch Charlie and his son still have more zucchini flowers than they know what to sensibly do with. Feedback from some members who have bought them a few times suggests that they don’t travel well once they’re out of the tray. So, to alleviate this, Charlie will be packing 6-to-a-punnet. Whilst that means more plastic, it also means less food waste as the zucchini flowers will last much longer. He is offering at $3.40 a punnet, great value pricing Steve and Sam Grima will have fennel-with-frond for the next few weeks. (They have a medium-sized bulb, and the long frond can be used for garnish or for pesto - flavour is similar to dill). Also celeriac adds flavour to your potato mash, use a 50/50 mix of potato / celeriac.

06.01.2022 These are BDs tips for storing greens; I haven't tried the ice refresh but I will! Anyone have other recommendations ? ____________________ Greens for Box Divvy are picked the morning or night before delivery in the cool.... Limp greens are dehydrated; re-hydrate just before use - pop into a sink with water and ice, let sit 3 minutes then take out and softly shake dry. Watch limp rocket, silverbeet, lettuce pop back this way. Storage tips for greens; Delicate greens like lettuce and rocket; put into a container with a paper towel on the bottom and on the top to absorb moisture from the lid. Dont fully close, lift one edge of the lid as they like to breathe. Do the same with baby spinach but close the lid completely. Dont pack too tightly, that need to breathe ... Herbs divide into three main groups. 1. I hate water! Wet me and I’ll go mouldy" Dry soil herbs like rosemary and thyme. 2. I hate cold! Give me a glass of water and pop my roots into it . Mint/Basil 3. I like to be slightly damp! . . Get a slightly damp tea towel, wrap around produce and then put me into the fridge. OR into a glass of water in the fridge covered with an opaque (not clear) plastic bag but change the water daily. Oregano/ parsley /chives/ coriander Photo food52.com
