24.01.2022 Rockmelons from Hay and Griffith: sweet as, just $1.79 Australia is lucky enough to have several growing areas for rockmelons so that we have good supply almost year-round. (And that applies to most produce, by-the-way). In the middle of Sydney’s winter, we get rockmelons from Ord River in north-west of WA followed by the NT and far-north QLD in Sydney’s Spring. But the best melons-bar-none come from Hay and Griffith in western NSW: by the time they start picking in December/January, they’ve had months of sun, and not too much rain to keep the flavours intense. The Hay season lasts about 6-8 weeks we hope so don’t waste any time #fruit #vegetables #boxfruitveg #morisset #foodcoops #localproduce #farmers #boxsharing #cutyourfoodbill

24.01.2022 And at such great value this week too! #fruit #vegetables #boxfruitveg #morisset #foodcoops #localproduce #farmers #boxsharing #cutyourfoodbill

23.01.2022 Moussa’s Market Update, featuring white seedless grapes, Packham pears and locally-grown Pomegranates (both new season), Field tomatoes (lowest price on record) and basil. #fruit #vegetables #boxfruitveg #morisset #foodcoops #localproduce #farmers #boxsharing #cutyourfoodbill

21.01.2022 Panania Free Rangers was a team of two mothers that were looking for more work and wanted change in the way food and community services were delivered...so we i...nvented Panania Free Rangers. We free range across the area doing everything from meditation and producing seedlings to teaching kids to grow food in schools. Our initial aim was to grow food in the yards of elderly folks who needed a cup of tea and a chat and provide them with vegies and sell the rest into community. Here is another set up at a rental property that was part of our 5 gardens that we were growing in at the time....I do not recommend taking on this much at once if you have other commitments such as kids or a full time job ;) To start small...just save up some box divvy cardboard boxes and lay out a square on your grass. Add compost and manure and let it settle for a bit and then plant straight into it. We taught ourselves how to set up irrigation (heaps of videos on it) but you can just use an ordinary garden springkler to start....and away we went. Happy to help any backyard growers out there that are looking to get rid of the lawn and grow some food for their hub. Have a great weekend. 20.01.2022 Purple (Thai) eggplant grown by Charlie Vella in Freemans Reach These hardy little eggplants are popular in curries and casseroles as they stay firm when cooked, rather than morph into a mushroom as most regular eggplants are wont to do. And here is the recipe for this delicious Thai Yellow Curry with Chicken and Eggplant: https://www.delicious.com.au//thai-chicken-eggpla/4aq5HSco =========================... Tomato and basil pasta has never been cheaper With generous bunches of basil at $2.53, and bunches of sweet Baby Roma tomatoes just $2 each, you could do a lot worse than a simple and quick tomato and basil pasta and you won’t need a recipe beyond ‘chop it up and throw it in a pan with some olive oil for 2 minutes’. #fruit #vegetables #boxfruitveg #morisset #foodcoops #localproduce #farmers #boxsharing #cutyourfoodbill

14.01.2022 Wow check out this saving! Box Divvy Beetroot price is 1/3 of the price of the supermarket this week! Stock up the freezer! Make a roast. Homemade beetroot ...hummus? What else do you make with beetroot? #veggiebox #savings #produce

12.01.2022 Sweet potatoes from Bundaberg are cheap as chips Everything is relative, so when we say cheap ($1.95/Kg), we’re just mindful that we had them for close to $1/kg for most of last year despite the fact that sweet potatoes were ‘thrown out of helicopters’ to help fire-affected wildlife. But cheap relative to Coles ($4.90/Kg) and Woolworths ($5/Kg). And by all means: turn them into chips. But it’s only January and our NY resolutions are still fresh so why not do something Me...diterraneanhttps://minimalistbaker.com/mediterranean-baked-sweet-pota/ Speaking of New Year’s resolutions: if you’re thinking of reducing your Carb intake, get yourself a Spaghetti Squash or 2 especially now that they’re only around the $3 mark. They’re also healthier than Pub Squash and Lemon Squash, which are the dominant options that present themselves when you search for Squash on Coles or Woolies online #fruit #vegetables #boxfruitveg #morisset #foodcoops #localproduce #farmers #boxsharing #cutyourfoodbill

11.01.2022 Half a kilo of strawberries for $2.50 This week, we are selling the most amazing strawberries from DM Jennings in Cygnet, Tasmania. Like many farmers, they... are desperately short of farm labour and as conditions have been perfect for strawberries, there’s tonnes of them. So all hands have been sent into the fields to pick, and no-one is left at the packing shed to sort and grade by size. No worries, we said: We’ll have ANY size and shape, so long as they taste great. To make the packing easier, they put them in 500g jumbo punnets. And get this: we can sell these beauties for $2.50 per punnet. Yes you heard that right, a half kilo pack for $2.50. As they’re grown in a relatively cool climate, they’re sweet and they’ll last. For that price, you can buy 2 punnets: 1 to eat and 1 for jam! #boxdivvy #boxdivvyrathmines #foodhub #foodcoop #savemoney #supportsmallbusinesses #supportfarmers #health #heslthylifestyle #healthyliving #strawberries

08.01.2022 Off with their heads! Gerard Saad in Wilberforce grows broccoli and spuds in winter, and corn in summer. Like most of our growers, he uses little, if any, chemicals but since the corn is so sweet, there’s a chance that the odd caterpillar may have started munching before you do. It’s usually the very tip of the cob that’s affected, and we suggest you chop it off and enjoy the rest of the sweet and juicy corn. At 69c a cob, they beat even the supermarket specials!

08.01.2022 Moussa’s Market Update, featuring incredible strawberries from Tasmania (not Victoria) at less than half price. And delicious. He also shows off the new season Granny Smith apples, Tasmanian carrots on special (first time ever), red cabbages, local zucchini from Charlie Vella in Freemans Reach, and new season chestnuts . #fruit #vegetables #boxfruitveg #morisset #foodcoops #localproduce #farmers #boxsharing #cutyourfoodbill

05.01.2022 White seedless grapes have crashed below the $4/Kg mark We suspect exports to Asia are at a low ebb, so grape supply for the domestic market has improved dramatically over the past few weeks. It’s early in the season so we’re sure you can’t get enough of them yet. But if and when you do, here are a few other ideas #fruit #vegetables #boxfruitveg #morisset #foodcoops #localproduce #farmers #boxsharing #cutyourfoodbill

05.01.2022 Farming is not easy. With climate definitely changing it has become more unpredictable when to sow, when to harvest. Even when you are ready to harvest then thi...ngs like weather can destroy the whole journey in growing. Those early morning risings, the fence fixing, the tending to your crop blows up in your face. It doesn't just affect this farming family it also affects you the end consumer. Time to hear their stories, share their stories and buy their produce. They feed us. Last week, we told you how tropical cyclone Niran flattened Far North Queensland banana farms. A week on, and the damage is starting to become clearer: about $180m worth of bananas were lost, and roughly half of the North Queensland banana farms suffered damage. Not all farms are insured, or insurance covers it. Those farmer on contract to deliver are mostly in a state of shock - 'What do we do now?' So it's inevitable - banana prices will stay elevated for some time. Expect to pay around $3.50/kg this week. We don't price gouge at Box Divvy so we pay the farmers fairly, and provide a fair price to members. #shopsmall #boxdivvy #supportlocal #payfarmersfairly

03.01.2022 The apple & pear season is gathering pace: we have new season Granny Smith, Royal Gala apples from Orange at just $2.53/Kg, and new season Packham pears are improving our fruit choices Another new season offering: local Pomegranates still small, but full of juice and super-sweet. Just $1.47 each. Of course, you can always get them from Harris Farm at $8 a pop #fruit #vegetables #boxfruitveg #morisset #foodcoops #localproduce #farmers #boxsharing #cutyourfoodbill
