25.01.2022 Thought I'd try this recipe for Christmas - a camlamken instead of turducken. But I am not sure where to find a camel. Can anyone help?

23.01.2022 Monday price update - A few price changes today, with transport out of Qld and northern NSW hampered by heavy rain. Some areas received more than 300ml on Sunday, causing flash-flooding and road closures. This won’t improve until later in the week, and it’s possible that bananas and other semi-tropical fruit will tighten up over coming weeks . For now, the impact is confined to:... Lychees: back up over $19/Kg Figs: have taken a big hike to $33/Kg Broccoli is up to $4.85/Kg Roma tomatoes are now around $3.50/Kg JAP Pumpkin is up to $1.67/Kg. Pumpkin usually tightens up in the lead-up to Christmas and for once, the weather over Christmas may be suitably cool to put on a roast! A few price drops: Grapes have continued to drop: whites to $6.92/Kg and reds to $6.22/Kg The 2Kg cherry box has come down a little to under $31 (or $15.40/Kg). We are unsure if this will last, as cherry prices usually go up as we get closer to Christmas but you may as well take advantage! Eggplant prices have fallen below the $3/Kg mark and is now seriously cheap.
22.01.2022 It's no surprise that bananas are very popular in our hub! For this reason, I generally leave them to our splits, because we usually have no trouble getting a box or two over the line. After selling around $2.50 for most of winter and spring, they have now dropped to under $2. Yay! Here are a few other considerations:... 95% of Box Divvy bananas are sourced mainly from the Coffs region from Scotts Head to Woolgoolga and some from northern NSW around Murwillumbah. Transport from Coffs (530kms from Sydney) uses about 80% fewer food miles compared with Queensland bananas, most of which are grown in Innisfail, south of Cairns. Because of the more humid climate in North Qld, the crop requires a fair amount of ag chemicals fungicides and pesticides mainly to maintain their good looks. That is important, as the major supermarkets only buy Qld bananas and cosmetics are considered more important than flavour and nutrition. By contrast, Coffs bananas use little or no chemicals at all. What’s more: because it’s a little cooler than Qld, it takes an extra 1-2 months to bring the fruit to maturity. That makes the Coffs bananas noticeably sweeter. That said, they may not always win a beauty contest! Lower input and transport cost plus Box Divvy’s low-cost model mean they are consistently 30-40% cheaper than supermarket bananas What’s more: bananas are remarkably healthy. They provide lots of energy, but still have a lower GI (Glycaemic Index) than sweet potatoes and pumpkin. That means blood sugar rises only gradually after eating a banana. They’re also full of vitamin B6 important for the manufacture of red blood cells as well as potassium (good for brain development and maintaining healthy blood pressure) and fibre (including pectin, which can help prevent colon cancer). How many boxes of bananas will we get through this week?
22.01.2022 Monday market update - Lots coming down in price! * Passionfruit is arriving in big numbers don’t pay more than 50c each... * Cherries are getting better and cheaper each day: down to $13.60/Kg, and the quality is excellent * Cauliflowers are down to $2.18 each * Corn is starting to come back to earth: $1.46 a cob * Ditto for green beans: $6.80/Kg * Eggplant is loving the warmer weather: expect to pay around $3.90/Kg * Last but not least, zucchini is now at glut levels, and farmers are begging us to take them. So let's go big on zucs at just $1.72/Kg. The quality is great, and here are some ideas to use them up: https://damndelicious.net/2014//21/baked-parmesan-zucchini/ https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/food-r//zucchini-recipes/ https://www.loveandlemons.com/zucchini-recipes/ See more
21.01.2022 We are all excited to try these fruit mince pies this year! Only available for the next 3 weeks :)
21.01.2022 Fruity features - We are still waiting for the price of mangoes and cherries to come down, and blueberries have temporarily tightened up. * But in the meantime, you could try some blackberries :) * Meanwhile, our regular strawberry grower near Monbulk in Vic is taking a break in between patches which gives us a chance to try out some of the more premium berries. They’re extra large, super-sweet and should be around $3.40 per punnet. Depending on the feedback, we may co...ntinue with this more premium fruit even after the regular berries have returned. Let us know what you think * And what about some lychees?! They’re only just starting, but they pack a punch. Still $23/Kg, but they will drop in the lead-up to Christmas. See more
20.01.2022 Fruity features - * Valencia oranges are generally thought of as juicing oranges, because their juice keeps a bit better than Navels. But that doesn't mean they are no good as eating oranges! They are the only citrus that grows over summer, and have their own natural sun protection system. When they get a lot of sun, their skin develops a green hue that makes them appear unripe but in fact, the greener they are, the more sun they’ve had and the sweeter they’ll be. And they...'ve just come down to $1.53/kg. Sweet! * Mangoes will still be around $2.40 each next week. The Mango Growers Association of Australia expect there to be a bumper crop due just before Christmas, so we won't see them drop to under $2 until well into December. * Recent bad weather in Queensland smashed up the peaches, and other growing regions like Maroota, Canoelands and southern NSW won’t start in earnest for another few weeks so we'll make do with nectarines at under $4/Kg. Life's tough lol * Or we might try new season plums, aptly named Earliqueens. They’re early indeed, and whilst as a rule we don’t touch plums until close to Christmas, we do make exceptions from time to time let's see how they go. * Menindee large white seedless grapes used to be grown mainly in Menindee, but lack of water security means that they’ve been diversified into other regions, especially Emerald and St George in North Queensland. They are still a little pricey around $12-$13 per kg but give it a few weeks and they’ll be below $10. * See more
19.01.2022 Fruity features - * Passionfruit is back from a long absence, and they’re sweet with plenty of pulp. Expect to pay around 75c each. * Drinking coconut (imported) has had its supply lines restored about $3 each * Pineapples are still plentiful... * Mango supply is slowly picking up * Cherries have been a little tricky these past 2 weeks, with some soft fruit hitting the market. We’re navigating the supply with appropriate care and have temporarily halted the 2kg box from Boosey until the quality improves. * Almost any fruit is good and cheap from berries to melons to Valencias but the exception is lemons: between now and the start of the new season in March/April next year, expect to pay up to $10/Kg for good lemons. Perhaps switch to limes instead? They’re now under $5/kg and on the way down.

19.01.2022 We love price drops! There are some dramatic price falls for some produce lines this week: corn and beans fell by 60%-70% (and corn is now about 85-90c a cob), whilst there were smaller falls for truss tomatoes, rainbow carrots, passionfruit, cauliflowers and others. Many of these are now looking very cheap

11.01.2022 Fruity flash - * Box Divvy melons are great value! Whole watermelon is $7.28 each, or $1.94/kg. At Coles, they are $3.50/kg. At Woolworths you'll pay $7.44 for just a quarter of a melon. Or you could pay $29.75 for a whole one Rockmelons are just $1.89 at BD. A whole rockmelon at Coles will set you back $5.90, or you could try Woolworths, where they are $6.90 each. Delicious Orange Candy Melons are $2.56 at BD. ... * We all love mangoes! This week Kensington Prides are $2.21 each, and Honeygolds are $1.89 * Large cherries - around 28 to 30mm - available at $15.60/kg. Either loose, in 500g lots, or in 2kg boxes. * Peach and nectarine supply is down around 30% due to weather events. Much of the Qld crop was lost to hail in October, while some other growing areas had a cool spring and have not started picking yet. Expect to pay around $4.80/kg * Lemons may be at the end of their season, but limes are going strong! Prices have dropped by almost half since November to around 40c each, or $4.35/kg. See more
11.01.2022 More market news! * As well as Menindee grapes, we will also have Red Crimson grapes available! Menindees $11.33/kg, Red Crimsons $9.07/kg * KP mangoes will be more expensive than expected, nearly $3 each. But we've sourced some R2E2 mangoes as well, and they'll be around $2.25 each. R2E2 mangoes need to be fully ripe before eating. Colour is not always a good guide (they often have a slight green tinge), touch is better: they must have some ‘give’ before eating. If they’re s...till firm, leave them in a warm spot for a few days. * As supply of local garlic picks up, prices are dropping. We’re expecting white garlic from Tooleybuc in the Murray region next week. It is expected to sell for around $19/Kg. * Simon Chong in Leppington managed to clean up after the recent hailstorm and salvaged several paddocks of baby buk choi. Great weather since the storm has meant they've matured well, and are ready for picking! They will be around $1.16/bunch * The Ung family in Wallacia will have heirloom tomato mix, at $8.46/kg. There are Green Zebra, Red and Pink Oxheart, Golden Jubilee, and Black Russians * Corn and green beans are back - but not that cheap at the moment. See more

06.01.2022 Looks good! Thanks for sharing, BD Berowra Heights :)
02.01.2022 Vegie views - Paddocks from Horsley Park to Freemans Reach have dried out a little, but some crops have been lost along the way: Charlie Vella lost the remainder of his cauliflowers, whilst several herb and Asian greens farms are rebuilding after having been hit by hail. * Charlie is still picking cabbages and rhubarb, whilst Steve Grima in Horsley Park still has a good supply of fennel-with-frond, Dutch carrots and radish. * By and large, supply and quality are recovering ... and the predicted price rises have only been moderate. The biggest impact has been on English spinach and rocket bunches, but baby buk choi is almost back to normal and especially shallots are now quite plentiful, according to Simon Chong from Leppington selling for just $1.19 a bunch. In other veg news, broccoli, zucchini, beans, peas and snaps, eggplant, cabbages, lettuces and salad material from cucumbers to tomatoes remain good value, but steer clear of red capsicums for a few weeks: supply is scarce and prices are expected to rise to $10/Kg and possibly higher.
01.01.2022 Vegie views - Something new! Baby roma truss tomatoes! Grown in Clybucca, north of Port Macquarie, we hear they are even sweeter than regular truss tomatoes! But any tomato is good value at the moment...
01.01.2022 Hope everyone has weathered this (apparently) stormy weekend safely. We mostly missed it, being away on the beautiful mid north coast! Time for our splits update, orders close 9pm tomorrow, Monday.... Belicious is through, so you can continue to add any Belicious products you like. Remember order and pay this week, receive next week. We are $9.40 short of Shepherd's bakery minimum order amount. Asparagus- 5 more Avos - 7 more Blueberries - 2 more Buk choi- 3 more Dutch carrots - 3 more Basil - 1 more Coriander- 3 more Mangoes - 2 more Plums - 12 more Heirloom tomatoes - 2 more
01.01.2022 Vegie views - * Charlie Vella in Freemans Reach is picking cabbages. Great for coleslaw in this hot weather! And they’re full of antioxidants, help prevent cancer, reduce blood pressure, control blood sugar, lower cholesterol, and can help with weight loss because of its high fibre content. Add some carrots, shallots, and parsley, make a simple coleslaw dressing, and you've got a bowl full of goodness! * Antioxidants are also found in broccoli and cauliflower. How healthy ca...n we be?! Broccoli now $2.90/kg, and caulis $2.58 each. Broccoli is $5.69/kg in Harris Farm, or $3/kg on special at Coles. * Kim and Laks Ung, from Golden Fields in Wallacia, can't stop growing Lebanese cucumbers! Well, the weather might have something to do with it...lol. Box Divvy has reduced the price to $1.86/kg to encourage us to eat even more! There's a great range of ideas here https://www.taste.com.au/search-recipes/?q=cucumber. The cucumber, lime and basil spritz sounds very refreshing, and good for the kids. Cucumber and gin fizz best left for the adults! See more
