25.01.2022 Just love our hub...huge thanks to my fill in packers. Blessed to always have helpers. #community #localfoodcoop #lendingahand
25.01.2022 I had some Daikon radish seed left over from my time at the community garden where they were grown in high number. The Japanese love the Daikon for its low calories and high nutrients. I've always dealt with my surplus veg by pickling or fermenting but this soup looks great! Looking forward to giving this prized radish a real red hot go! #localfood #pananiagrown #daikon #supportingsydneygrowers #lovemysoups #playingwithpickles #Panania #picnicpoint #revesby
25.01.2022 What’s going to be good this week? Simon Chong, our Asian Greens and Herb grower, is excited! Most of his crop from Gai Lan to coriander and shallots have come through the wet couple of days in good shape. The mild weather is pushing them along nicely, and he is expecting excellent numbers of English spinach, Chinese broccoli and coriander. Yes or no to Coriander??? Some love, some hate! I'm in the love camp! English Spinach so delicate and delish... nice for a change...! I couldn't do the stalks on silverbeet as a kid and would have preferred the small, green subtle stalks of the English Spinach. Split??? #localfoodmovement #supportingsydneygrowers #panania #padstow #milperra #revesby
25.01.2022 Fruit options galore but mangoes still tight The fruit department is coming to life....BUT MANGOES STILL TIGHT SUPPLY.
24.01.2022 For 1 week only, Shepherds is bringing back their Halloween Pumpkin Cob. This 400g cob is fun to eat as is, but even better fun when hollowed out and filled with a pumpkin dip. Woohoo....Recipe to follow..... #halloween #pumpkincobloaf #partyfood #panania #picnicpoint #milperra #revesby #padstow

24.01.2022 Love me a cob loaf!!! Here's the recipe....kids love it! Halloween Food: Dip in Pumpkin Cob Recipe... Shepherd's Pumpkin Cob Loaf 500g diced pumpkin (1cm cubes) 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 teaspoons ground cumin 2 tablespoons Greek or Natural (unsweetened yogurt) 2 tablespoons raw cashews Fresh coriander (2 tablespoons finely chopped & extra to serve) Salt and Pepper, Olive Oil Microwave pumpkin with a teaspoon of water for a few minutes, until par-cooked. In a large frypan over medium heat, fry garlic and cumin in olive oil for 1 minute, then add pumpkin. Fry until soft, then remove. Add pumpkin, cashews and the yogurt into a blender and whiz until it forms a thick dip consistency - not too pureed, a few chunks are nice! Add chopped coriander, salt and pepper to taste, and stir through with a spoon. Hollow out the Pumpkin Cob carefully (retaining the bread from inside for dipping) and bake lightly until crispy. Remove the cob from the oven, leave to cool until it's just warm and then gently pour and spoon in the dip. Decorate with a big sprig of coriander and serve on a platter with the lightly toasted bread chunks, plus vegetable sticks for dipping.
23.01.2022 The importance of local Having worked with over 15 local growers from Wilberforce to Horsley Park and Leppington has made us appreciate the hard work they do, in sometimes challenging conditions. But they are important in other ways, especially for their local communities. Over the past 12 months, we or rather: you! have injected almost $1.3m into these local communities on Sydney’s fringe. And much of that money is spent again with other local businesses bakeries, flower shops, car mechanics. According to some research, the multiplier effect of spending local can be as high as $3.50 for every dollar that goes into these communities. #localfood #localeconomy #supportingsydneygrowers #backyardgrowers #lowfoodmiles
22.01.2022 Milperra Public carrots are back...only a few bunches so be quick!!! Panania Free Rangers have mixed peas (snow, yellow, greenfeast and sugarsnap) and mesclun lettuce! I'm on the hunt for the crispiest (soil grown, non iceberg lettuce) I can find...I'll keep you posted. Bron & I pick, wash and pack the day before hub day....can't get fresher!!! We're in the transition period now where Summer fruit still a few weeks away and apples done. We've put pears in for a change! #eatingseasonally #localfood #milperapublic #pananiafreerangers #cantgetmorelocal #chemfree #schoolfoodgrowers #localgrowers
22.01.2022 WHAT'S HOT IN FRUIT THIS WEEK.... How about quality Pink Lady apples for under $3 a kg? Growers know that during the peak berry season, demand for apples drops so for the next week or two, we can offer great Pink Lady’s at pretty well the lowest price this season. You know we love our pink ladies....... #shopsmall #shoplocal #locavore See more
21.01.2022 Jumbo Blueberries More and more growers are offering Jumbo blueberries, and the supply is becoming quite consistent. We have to say they are consistently sweeter and crunchier than regular blueberries. There is a risk of ‘splitting the splits’ between the 2 varieties, but we’ll have a go at offering both. #variety #jumboblueberries #panania #picnicpoint
19.01.2022 Our little hub is almost full. Better jump to it!
19.01.2022 WHAT'S NEW THIS WEEK AT BOX DIVVY.... So after a long search for genuine free-range egg supplier, we’ve ended up at the Jones Brothers Family Farm near Forbes, about an hour west of Orange. They run their farm with fewer than 1500 hens per HA about 6 times more spacious than the ‘standard’ free-range farm (the major brands as well as supermarket own brands run at 10,000 hens/HA: that’s about 1sqm per hen!). The Hunter Valley brand runs at 950 hens/HA even more spacious W...e’ll continue to get supply of 600g packs from Hunter Valley brand and they’ve agreed to drop the price a little to pre-Covid levels. So the new range is: Hunter Valley 600g : $4.98 per doz (was $5.53) Jones Bros 700g : $5.62 per doz Delucas Organic 600g : $8.67 #supportingethicalfarmers #freerangechooks #localfoodcoop #supportingaussiefarmers #panania #picnicpoint #revesby #padstow #milperra

18.01.2022 I'M EXCITED :) :) Some of you may know that I'm passionate about local food growing and so is Box Divvy! One of the Box Divvy aims this year is to start neighbours growing and selling into their local Box Divvy Food Hub. We hope that backyard growers will eventually contribute 10-20% of our food supply, which will bolster food security at a time of rapid climate change and possible future pandemics. ... The way to change things is to let communities run it. Backyard growers can apply to supply their produce to one or more hubs in a region by emailing us. Part of the requirements is to have their soil tested for the presence of heavy metals by the VegeSafe program. https://research.science.mq.edu.au/vegesafe/ #localfoodgrownbylocalpeople #communitygrowers #panania #picnicpoint #padstow #milperra
17.01.2022 So I used this recipe as a guide....didn't have sake, used rice wine vinegar. Added extra ginger, chilli and hokkien noodles and brussels for the greens.. Almost added mushrooms too. Now I reckon the daikon (largely flavourless) could be snuck into kids' meals without too much protest. Reminds me a bit of choko. Going to try it with the Sunday roast vegies tonight too. #usewhatyouhave #experimentalcook #localfood #panania #picnicpoint ... https://pickledplum.com/daikon-chicken-soup-recipe/
16.01.2022 For the newbies...
15.01.2022 Aussie Garlic.... I started eating my garlic straight away and was disappointed with the flavour...a few weeks on, it's blowing our heads off! Note to self, the curing thing...it's a thing!!!!! Box Divvy have it now, but it's pricey... Picked fresh from late September, it takes about 6 weeks to cure: flavours intensify and the skin becomes papery. The quality of the early release is excellent, but expect to pay a bit of a premium for a few weeks... #growyourown #backyardgrowers #panania #picnicpoint #bepatient #garlicgrowing
14.01.2022 Passionfruit is back from a long absence, and they’re sweet with plenty of pulp. Expect to pay around 75c each. Drinking coconut (imported) has had its supply lines restored about $3 each Pineapples are still plentiful, whilst mango supply is slowly picking up... In other veg news, broccoli, zucchini, beans, peas and snaps, eggplant, cabbages, lettuces and salad material from cucumbers to tomatoes remain good value, but steer clear of red capsicums for a few weeks: supply is scarce and prices are expected to rise to $10/Kg and possibly higher. #shoptheseasons #supportlocal #summerfruit #summerveggies #panania #picnicpoint #oatley #mortdale #Holsworthy

12.01.2022 Gerard Saad is picking tonnes of broccoli shoots: they are the side shoots that come up some 4-6 weeks after the main head is chopped off. They’re tender and sweet and usually reserved for upmarket restaurants but we’re greedy and take as many as he’s willing to pick. #broccoli #supportingsydneygrowers #greenisgood #localfoodhub #localfamilies #panania #picnicpoint #revesby #milperra #padstow
12.01.2022 Turmeric - has amazing properties. It looks a bit like ginger and it’s warm, peppery and earthy in taste. So what is so good about it? It has lots of iron and manganese. Turmeric’s active ingredient, Curcumin, has shown to lower cholesterol by working in tandem with the liver to remove harmful cholesterol from the body. It has antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. You can also use as a natural liver detoxifier and let keeping weight off by helping speed ...up the metabolism. WHAT TO DO WITH IT? Steps to prepare them: first clean the rhizomes then in a saucepan of hot water boil for 45 minutes. Let cool then peel skin off. Dry one week or use oven method below. When dry grind either using mortar and pestle or a food processor. Oven dry: If you peel the turmeric and very thinly slice it, lay out on oven paper. Then put it in a very low heat oven (50C) let it roast for a few hours until it is crisp dry. Grind it up in a spice grinder. As a tea - Grate a little turmeric into a small sieve, put boiling water over it, let it sit for a few minutes and drink it as a tea. #tumeric #localfoodcoop #panania #picnicpoint https://turmericaustralia.com.au/recipes/ Turmeric Roasted Potatoes Broccoli and Turmeric Soup Turmeric lemon pancakes for the kids Turmeric, coconut and Salmon curry
12.01.2022 Back to school this week! Time to get the fruit and veg back into the tin lids! They are going to love that Raymond Camilleri has kale that needs a pickin! 10.01.2022 Box Divvy Bananas are from Coffs - Guilt-free eatin.... 95% of Box Divvy bananas are sourced mainly from the Coffs region from Scotts Head to Woolgoolga and some from northern NSW around Murwillumbah. Transport from Coffs (530kms from Sydney) uses about 80% fewer food miles compared with Queensland bananas, most of which are grown in Innesfail, south of Cairns Because of the more humid climate in North Qld, the crop requires a fair amount of ag chemicals fungicides and ...pesticides mainly to maintain their good looks. That is important, as the major supermarkets only buy Qld bananas and cosmetics are considered more important than flavour and nutrition. By contrast, Coffs bananas use little or no chemicals at all. What’s more: because it’s a little cooler than Qld, it takes an extra 1-2 months to bring the fruit to maturity. That makes the Coffs bananas noticeably sweeter. That said, they may not always win a beauty contest! Lower input and transport cost plus Box Divvy’s low-cost model mean they are consistently 30-40% cheaper than supermarket bananas What’s more: bananas are remarkably healthy. They provide lots of energy, but still have a lower GI (Glycaemic Index) than sweet potatoes and pumpkin. That means blood sugar rises only gradually after eating a banana. They’re also full of vitamin B6 important for the manufacture of red blood cells as well as potassium (good for brain development and maintaining healthy blood pressure) and fibre (including pectin, which can help prevent colon cancer). Did we mention they’re fat-free and cholesterol-free? Little wonder that bananas are Australia’s number one selling fruit! #lowfoodmiles #banana #bestyoucanget #panania #picnicpoint
10.01.2022 Stone fruit is here, folks....wooohooo!!!! MANGOES UPDATE.... The mango season is in transition between Darwin and Katherine in the NT, causing a drop in supply for the next week or so. To cushion the impact, we’re buying good fruit in bulk there may be some skin blemish, but nothing that affects the eating quality. They’re sold by the dozen, which will make it easier to get splits over the line. In about a month from now, we’ll see plenty of mangoes from Bowen and Mareeba and prices will come down to under $1.50.
10.01.2022 This from another hub... I don't know how to explain Rona to Ralphie so lingering for a 30 second pat for the dog before sprinting to the car with your veg box is fine by me
09.01.2022 Some food for thought!
09.01.2022 Wise words from a sister hub...
09.01.2022 All about berries! My daughter is studying nutrition at Sydney and she is smashing our supply of berries every few days...the "smoothie"! Thankfully she's picked up some of the homesteader vibe from me and has been freezing them. We make our own beef, chicken, veggie & seafood stock and can and store tomatoes for the winter...long before covid became a thing. ... I love having access to the freshest fruit and veg and snacking on all the colours! #localfood #communityhub #blueberriesfordays #strawberrysmoothie #summerfruitsarecoming #panania #picnicpoint #easthills #milperra #oatley #peakhurst
09.01.2022 We are 1 year old this month. Yay for us.We are 1 year old this month. Yay for us.
08.01.2022 THEY ARE BACK BABY!!! Blood oranges- are wonderfully sweet and slightly spicy, with hints of Cassis and berries. Imagine an orange that tastes of raspberry. They've had plenty of frost so they taste fantastic. It’s still early in the season, so they’re not yet fully red but have plenty of flavour. Blood oranges are the best winter antidote with vitamin C and a powerful antioxidant. The jewel-like colour of blood oranges segments in a salad looks amazing. Try combinng them with beetroot and cucumber into a lively winter/spring salad. #bloodorange #seasonalfood #LocalFamilies #unsupermarket #panania #picnicpoint
07.01.2022 What's hot in vegetables: Charlie Vella in Freemans Reach has enough ZUCCHINI FLOWERS to supply every restaurant in Sydney (if only they were buying), so he’s dropped the price to $3.91 per half dozen. He is continuing to pick the DAIKON. Would you believe he supplied us with more than 300 radishes last week? In a normal week, we might sell maybe 20... Steve and Sam Grima have finished their colourful mixed beetroot bunches, but instead they’re picking rainbow carrots. They will have good numbers of ROMANESCO this week, and with regular white cauliflowers tightening, you might want to get some interesting spirals. Lastly, RED KALE is back: it tastes about the same as green kale, but it contains a lot of an antioxidant called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins protect purple vegetables from sunlight damage, cold temperatures, and other stressors. And they attract pollinators, like bees and butterflies. They also can help protect and heal your cells from damage and protect you from many lifestyle diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular and neurological diseases. OK ONIONS...did we mention the glut of onions that is hitting the market? Both brown onions ($1/Kg) and red onions ($1.66/kg) are at their lowest prices in several years. Why not make some French onion soup? Gerard Saad has started his new SEBAGO crop. These brushed potatoes retain more flavour because they haven’t been washed: the dirt actually protects the potato. Gerard Saad is also picking loads of GREEN CABBAGES. You can pay $5.90 in the supermarket, or pay him just $1.81 and it’s yours. So long as you have 5 other members supporting the split They’re not big but very dense and compact: one cabbage will see you eating coleslaw for several days or sauerkraut well into the summer! #supportingaussiefarmers #seasonaleating #growitlocal #panania #picnicpoint #revesby #milperra
06.01.2022 We're helping out the farmers this week.... We have a glut of zucchinis from Grima's and Raymond Camilleri so they're in the starting order and a late flush of purple and green cauli's so look out for them in the splits. **SCHOOL & PFR PRODUCE** Back on the list... *Mesclun, buttercrunch lettuce, radishes & kale #schoolgrowers #milperra #pananiafreerangers #easthillsgirls #zucchinifordays
06.01.2022 Waz hot and Waz Not.... In vegetables: Gerard Saad’s broccoli has dropped below the $3 mark. The supply is mixed between Small Heads and Shoots: we cannot guarantee you’ll get shoots, simply because there’s not enough going around. Luck of the draw!... Steve and Sam Grima should have plenty of good-sized Romanesco cauliflowers but if you’re after regular white caulis: they’re around $2.18 each Jaq Free Ranger in Panania has cleared her Daikon patch, but Charlie Vella in Freemans Reach is making up the slack: in fact, he says he can do the ‘smaller’ white radish (under 1kg) for just $2 each. Even if you don’t like regular red radish, you’ll like the white ones - promise. :) After a long absence, grey or Lebanese zucchini is back. Now available in 5kg boxes, they sell around $6.38/kg. Hothouse-grown near Maroota, north of Sydney. Onions are excellent value at the moment: $1.15/kg for brown and $1.66 for red onions (selling for $3 and $3.50 respectively in the supermarkets). We’re thinking caramelised onions over mashed potatoes, or French onion soup recipes following After dropping in price earlier in the week, Field and Roma tomatoes have tightened again. Baby truss tomatoes are defying the trend, and aside from being incredibly sweet they’re now under $2 a bunch A few products are gone: the chestnut season has finished; Kipfler potatoes are not the best; and summer squash is advised to wait untileh well, summer Still very expensive: cucumbers and eggplant both over $9/kg. #localfood #picnicpoint #supportingaussiefarmers #seasonaleating
06.01.2022 What's hot in fruit this week..... **Strawberries have been as cheap as they’ll get this season. **Kensington Pride mangoes will be the next to watch. The word from Darwin: the crop is looking good. This week, expect to pay a touch over $3 each ... **Pink Lady apples will be under $3/kg for another week so stock up whilst you can ** Blood orange exports are suffering from the global Covid-19 crisis, and we’re starting to see glut conditions: prices even for the bigger fruit have dropped under $2/kg. If you haven’t tried them yet, they are amazingly aromatic and even though Spring is in the air have a complex flavour of mint and autumn leaves. It’s kinda hard to describe by mere mortals **Packham pears are a worthy substitute for Josephine and to make it easier for Splits to go across, we’re repacking them into 9kg boxes. #localfood #communitygrowers #supportingaussiefarmers #panania #picnicpoint #oatley #mortdale #milperra
06.01.2022 Waz’good-n-waz’not In fruit: Berries are just over $3 a punnet excellent value and great eating Honey Murcott mandarins have started, and the early season fruit is low on seed but high on juice and sweetness. And incredibly cheap at under $2/Kg. Worth a try... After a patchy pineapple picking period, supply is improving: we’re expecting good fruit from far North Qld this week (tops-on) for around $2.72 each Blood oranges are getting better and better: this week’s supply is a little smaller, but incredibly purple-red. And just $2.43/Kg In pears, it’s Josephines ($2.30/kg) and Nashi pears (59c each) that are worth giving a go #seasonaleating #localfood #supportingaussiefarmers #panania #picnicpoint #revesby #padstow
05.01.2022 WHAT'S HOT....in the Fruit department: Strawberries (around $3.40) and blueberries (under $4) will be good value this week In Citrus, we’ll have new season Tangelos combining the juiciness of Ruby grapefruit with the sweetness of a Tangerine for under $2/Kg ($4.90 in the supermarkets)... Blood oranges are now deep-purple/red and under $3/kg. See below for recipe ideas Passionfruit ($0.54), bananas ($2.14/Kg) and rockmelons ($1.85 ea) are still great value at Little change in apples and pears (Josephines are still the best eating and the best value), but pineapples are scarce and expensive WHAT'S HOT:...In Vegetables: Steve Grima will have ROMANESCO CAULIFLOWERS, as well as rainbow beetroot and rainbow carrots. His BROCCOLINI will be good value this week at $2 a bunch especially with broccoli prices heading north Charlie Vella will still have lots of ZUCCHINI FLOWERS this week...OMG WHERE ELSE LOCALLY CAN YOU GET ZUKE FLOWERS??, and continues to offer them at 80c each. He’s also dropping the price of Wombok to $1.70 each, celery to just a little over $2 a bunch and ditto for iceberg lettuce ($2.08 each) Fennel and beetroot have both had a price drop. By coincidence, both go well with citrus and rocket. #unsupermarket #supportingsydneygrowers #panania #picnicpoint #revesby
05.01.2022 HOT or NOT for this week: UP: Cucumbers are going from bad to worse with the per Kg price now over $10 Supply out of WA has been routed by a tropical cyclone last month, and until supply out of Darwin and North Qld picks up, high prices are here to stay. Reports suggest there’s little to no availability in the major supermarkets... Tomatoes are expected to tighten a little, so prices for both Field and Truss tomatoes are now around $4 kg. Cauliflowers have hiked in price to around $3.26 still good value Also green beans will be a little dearer: around $5.50/Kg DOWN: Loose beetroot has dropped to $2.30/kg, but red capsicums have tightened a bit expect to pay around $3.25/kg next week. Still very cheap. Sugarsnap peas from Kim and Laks around $10/kg. That’s only a couple of dollars dearer than snowpeas. Mushroom Flats are scarce and have been temporarily removed but turmeric from northern NSW is back on after a long break. Around $20/Kg Last but not least, we’re expecting a big price drop for truss tomatoes: expect to pay no more than $3.75/Kg only just above field tomatoes. #supportlocalsuppliers #shopandeatseasonally #seasonalproduce #panania #picnicpoint #revesby #padstow #milperra
04.01.2022 WHAT'S HOT IN VEG.... **Paul Calleja from Warragamba has started picking his new season broad bean Charlie Vella has started picking cauliflowers. The medium-large sized caulis can only fit 8 to a box rather than the usual 10, and they are around $2.70 each **Charlie’s celery will now be packed in boxes of 6 bunches to make it easier to go over the line. This will continue so long as we get supply from Charlie.... AND.....ZUCCHINI FLOWERS...Now these would be a fancy father's day feast! Carlie’s zucchini flowers, now down to $3.57 per tray. Charlie says that even now, his restaurant sales are at best at half the normal level, and he can’t see a full recovery any time soon. So: if you haven’t tried them yet, they are delicious as Tempura, or stuffed with prosciutto and mozzarella or with ricotta and pine nuts. FINALLY Milperra Public School has their BABY BEETS and carrots in this week's hub. 03.01.2022 SPLIT OF THE WEEK: WT....Witlof??? Have you ever tried Witlof also known as Belgian Endive? ... They are starved of sunlight during the growth cycle and remain white to light yellow (similar to good leek which has soil heaped against the stem during the growth cycle; the bit that sees no sunlight stays white and is actually the edible part of the leek). As the name suggests, Belgian endive is common in Europe where it is baked in a little garlic and white wine, sprinkled with pancetta and cheese. After 20 minutes in the oven, finish them off under a hot grill. You can use bacon instead of pancetta, and try blue-vein cheese instead of regular cheese. You can also eat the leaves raw in a salad: they are slightly bitter and nutty, and go well with balsamic vinegar, pear and goats’ cheese or feta. #witlof #unusualveg #trysomethingnew #supportingaussiefarmers #growitlocal #panania #picnicpoint #revesby
03.01.2022 Food warrior Jaq The best thing about locally grown produce? The ability to pivot to fill your order. This week East Hills Girls went to pick the buttercrunc...h lettuce and the rain had them full of slugs. I ran out in the rain and mud this morning and filled the order with a loose leaf variety. I let my hub know and because they are gorgeous folks happy to support school growers there's no probs! Milperra Public thought they couldn't fill the radish order and they provided enough and huge bunches. We can feed ourselves organically grown produce on a small scale here in the city. Feel free to message me for tips on setting up the school kitchen garden for Box Divvy or just starting small in your own backyard...PS we're renters and we're supplying! #localfoodwarriors #boxdivvybackyardgrowers #foodsecurity #organicallygrown #sustainability

01.01.2022 From the farms this week.... What's hot in fruit.... Strawberries are a must-have this week, now that they’ve come down to $2.50 a punnet. The conditions in the main growing areas Caboolture, Bundaberg, Gympie and the Sunshine Coast are perfect: day-time temperatures in the mid-20’s, followed by cool nights to make sure they don’t ripen too quickly. That way, they maximise the amount of natural sugars they develop. By the way, the amount of land in Queensland dedicated... to strawberry growing would more than cover the Sydney CBD! This hubster picked strawberries in Caboolture may years ago and it was bloody hard work! Blood oranges have been amazing in colour, flavour and value: just $2.43/kg ($6.99 in Harris Farm), that’s cheaper even than regular navel oranges selling in Colesworth Afourer seedless mandarins are just over $2/Kg, and fantastic eating to boot Seedless watermelon has dropped to $1.43/Kg, and good-sized pineapples are still available for about $2.70 Lastly, we’re doing an experiment with Fuji apples: many Hubs struggle to get a 12Kg box across the line, so we are making it available as a 6Kg box for the next few weeks to test the difference. #supportingaussiefarmers #growitlocal #strawberrydays #panania #picnicpoint #revesby ##milperra
01.01.2022 Bye Bye apples..... In fruit, the apple season is starting to run out of steam and it’s at this tail-end of the season that last year’s drought and bushfires will be felt most acutely. Most growers have nothing left to pick, and only dribs and drabs left in the apple crates for packing. ... WAITING for stone fruit......not long now! #seasonaleating #supportingaussiefarmers #shopsmall #shoplocal #panania #picnicpoint #milperra #oatley #mortdale
