25.01.2022 GO A LITTLE TROPPO THIS WEEK Whilst we like our bananas from Coffs, there’s plenty of fruit which we have to travel to Queensland for, for now. They’re still pretty good value. Passionfruit is back from a long absence, and they’re sweet with plenty of pulp. Expect to pay around 75c each.... Drinking coconut (imported) has had its supply lines restored & will be about $3 each. Pineapples are still plentiful, whilst mango supply is slowly picking up. #Boxdivvy #foodhub #foodcoop #savemoney #healthyfood #healthylifestyle #healthyliving #supportsmallbusinesses #supportfarmers

24.01.2022 I remember watching a documentary on battery hens years ago & was so horrified that I vowed never to eat a caged egg again! I made the switch to free range eggs! I've recently learned not all free range eggs are created equally. At Box Divvy we have a range of free range & Organic eggs. ... The Jones Bros brand we sell run their farm with fewer than 1500 hens per HA about 6 times more spacious than the ‘standard’ free-range farm (the major brands as well as supermarket own brands run at 10,000 hens/HA: that’s about 1sqm per hen!). The Hunter Valley brand we sell runs at 950 hens/HA even more spacious Happy hens #freerangeeggs #fruit #vegetables #supportlocal #foodhub #foodcoop #farmfresh #savemoney #supportlocalfarmers #boxdivvy #freshfood #lowfoodmiles #reduceyourcarbonfootprint #noplasticpackaging #nutrition #healthy #healthyeating #biodynamicfarming #permaculture #vegetarian #vegan #earnanincome #workfromhome #parttimeincome #farmtoplate #eattherainbow

23.01.2022 Mangoes looking cheap for December Really? Can we wait this long? The Mango Growers Association of Australia is now predicting a bumper crop just before Christmas. Great everyone will be absolutely loaded with prawns, turkey and Christmas pudding and they expect us to squeeze in a tray of mangoes.... If the forecast is correct, we expect mangoes to be around $2.40 by next week. They won’t fall below the $2 mark until well into December Ah well, just as well there’s loads of other fruit! #boxdivvy #foodhub #foodcoop #savemoney #healthyfood #healthylifestyle #supportfarmers #supportsmallbusinesses

21.01.2022 B A N A N A S SUPERMARKET vs BOX DIVVY ... Great fruit choices galore this week, starting with bananas: the warmer weather is bringing on bigger crops and lower prices. After selling around $2.50 for most of winter and spring, they have now dropped to under $2. That alone is a good reason for going big this week. But here are a few other considerations: 95% of Box Divvy bananas are sourced mainly from the Coffs region from Scotts Head to Woolgoolga and some from northern NSW around Murwillumbah. Transport from Coffs (530kms from Sydney) uses about 80% fewer food miles compared with Queensland bananas, most of which are grown in Innesfail, south of Cairns. Because of the more humid climate in North Qld, the crop requires a fair amount of chemicals (fungicides and pesticides mainly) to maintain their good looks. That is important, as the major supermarkets only buy Qld bananas and cosmetics are considered more important than flavour and nutrition. By contrast, Coffs bananas use little or no chemicals at all. With Coffs being a little cooler than Qld, it takes an extra 1-2 months to bring the fruit to maturity. That makes the Coffs bananas noticeably sweeter. That said, they may not always win a beauty contest! Lower input and transport cost plus Box Divvy’s low-cost model means they are consistently 30- 40% cheaper than supermarket bananas. What’s more bananas are remarkably healthy. They provide lots of energy, but still have a lower GI (Glycaemic Index) than sweet potatoes and pumpkin. That means blood sugar rises only gradually after eating a banana. They’re also full of vitamin B6 important for the manufacture of red blood cells as well as potassium (good for brain development and maintaining healthy blood pressure) and fibre (including pectin, which can help prevent colon cancer). Did we mention they’re fat-free and cholesterol-free? It's no wonder bananas are Australia’s number one selling fruit! #boxdivvy #savemoney #foodhub #healthyliving #healthylifestyle #supportfarmers

21.01.2022 Here are some interesting facts about sourdough bread! Now I have even more reasons to love this bread In the long slow fermentation process that produces sourdough bread, important nutrients like iron, zinc, magnesium, antioxidants, folic acid & other B vitamins are produced. This process enables these nutrients to be absorbed more easily by our digestive system when we eat the sourdough bread. #shepherds_artisan_bakehouse #bread #glutenfree #sourdough #nopremixers #gourmet #gutfriendly

18.01.2022 Asparagus is here so it must be spring! Asparagus announces the start of spring, and they’re a tad early although, spring officially starts September 1. The initial asparagus supply comes from Victoria, and it’s not until late September that the locals start picking. Did you know that at the height of the growing season, it can take just 24 hours for an asparagus spear to appear seemingly out of nowhere? What you don’t see is the activity underground, with asparagus ...plants sending runners throughout the soil which almost at random will send asparagus spears to the surface. How cool is that The early supply is a bit unruly: they’re not always straight, the heads can be a little loose, but they’re crisp and tender. And at around $2.75 for a bigger-than-normal bunch, they’re good value already and the season has barely started. #Boxdivvy #foodcoop #foodhub #supportlocal #supportsmallbusiness #supportfarmers #Savemoney #vegetables #fruit #health #healthylifestyle

18.01.2022 The packing list is ready for tomorrow's delivery. This is how our hub members save 30 - 40% off their produce. The farmer sells by the box. Our hub members jump online and select the qty they would like and when that adds up to the total qty in the box. The split is successful & the box is sold! It gets delivered, divvy'd up & collected by our happy members.

17.01.2022 Some BIG price drops this week Although we’d love to see mangoes and cherries come down in price , there are some dramatic price falls for other produce lines this week. Corn and beans fell by 60%-70% (and corn is now about 85-90c a cob). ... There were smaller falls for truss tomatoes , rainbow carrots , passionfruit, cauliflowers and others. Many of these are now looking very cheap #boxdivvy #foodhub #foodcoop #savemoney #supportlocal #supportfarmers #supportsmallbusinesses #healthyfood #healthylifestyle #healthyeating

15.01.2022 One of local farmers Steve and Sam Grima from Horsley Park will be picking loads of celeriac this week! This is one of the slowest-growing vegetables around, taking about 5 months to reach maturity. For the next few weeks, they’re the cheapest you’ll see them this season. ($5.44 each compared with $9 in Harris Farm). ... Celeriac has the characteristic celery flavour, but in a creamy format. 13.01.2022 Did you know Valencia oranges were created in California, US back in the 1800’s. Not in Valencia, Spain. The original grower called them Valencias in honour of the fact that Spain was the centre of the citrus world at that time. Nowadays most Valencias are grown in Florida and Australia! Most citrus matures over autumn and winter, but Valencias are the only citrus variety grown over summer. When they get a lot of sun, their skin develops a green hue by ...way of sunscreen protection. It makes them appear unripe but in fact the greener they are, the more sun they’ve had and the sweeter they’ll be. Valencias have an unfair reputation as ‘juicing oranges’. The reason is that their juice keeps better than Navel juice which gets a little bitter over time. But the fact they produce better orange juice doesn’t mean they’re not great to eat as a hand orange! To give you one more reason they’ve just come down to $1.53/Kg. At that price, you can juice them and have ‘m too! #boxdivvy #foodhub #foodcoop #savemoney #supportsmallbusinesses #supportlocal #supportfarmers #healthylifestyle #healthyfood

12.01.2022 SPLITS My last post explained the process of how our hub members start order is created. This post will explain how our box sharing platform works which we call "splits". ... In this example brushed potatoes were not voted in our start order but there is a hub member who would like to order them this week. The hub member has suggested this split which will be displayed in the other hub members splits screen as per Picture 1. The farmer only sells brushed potatoes in bulk 10kg bags which has roughly 39 potatoes. As you can see from the photo some members have already joined in this split & there is only 18 potatoes left for our split to become successful. In the 2nd Picture I have decided to join in this split. I have committed to 8 potatoes of the 29 already sold which means we only need to sell 10 more. That's how we buy in bulk from the farmers & save money! Such a simple process. We have a huge array of fruit & vegetables to choose from. We even have bread, eggs, coffee & various pantry items. #boxdivvy #foodhub #foodcoop #supportlocal #supportlocalbusiness #supportfarmers #savemoney #healthyliving

09.01.2022 SPAGHETTI .... BUT WITHOUT THE CARBS !!! Our local farmer Steve Grima has started picking spaghetti squash. Why not give pasta a miss & give spaghetti squash a go. ... It's super easy to make. Simply cut in half, coat with olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. Place upside down on an oven tray and bake at 180 C for 30 - 40 minutes. 08.01.2022 C H E R R I E S The local cherry season has started, and with apples and pears on their last seasonal legs and mangoes suffering shortages, they’ve timed their entry pretty well! There was a time when most cherries came from Young, but to spread the risk of weather events orchards were established in Orange and Griffiths.... Cherries don’t like rain, and hail even less so! This week’s supply is coming from Big Red farm in Griffith. They’re still a tad expensive, but if they don’t get too much rain, they will halve in price by the middle of November. That could be a big IF though, with La Nina causing weather patterns to turn wetter and cooler but we at Box Divvy remain eternally optimistic! #Boxdivvy #foodhub #foodcoop #savemoney #supportlocal #supportsmallbusiness #supportfarmers #healthylifestyle #health

08.01.2022 The rising tide of obesity and diabetes Type-2 Several recent studies have highlighted how supermarkets are not part of the solution when it comes to solving the rising tide of obesity and diabetes Type-2. Unhealthy food and drinks are promoted twice as often, are twice as visible and with double the discount compared with healthy products.... If you walk to the end of big aisles & check what’s on promotion you're likely to find sugary drinks, chips, cookies & surgary cereals. To promote on the big aisle ends can cost manufacturers as much as $350,000 per week. These product categories represent less than 20% of sales but take up over 60% of promotional space. Why? Because junk foods , when promoted, will increase consumption. You might buy laundry powder or toilet paper when on special & even buy in bulk but you won’t be using any more than you normally would. Buy an extra pack of your favourite ‘chocolate biscuits’ & they'll disappear as quickly as the first pack. You will continue buying even after the promotion stops. This is why food manufacturers will pay more promoting junk foods they get a great return. Supermarkets are looking after their bottom line & not your waist line by promoting unhealthy options. At Box Divvy we are passionate & committed to creating healthy food communities. Where fresh produce is affordable for all & farmer's are paid a fair price. #boxdivvy #foodcoop #foodhub #supportfarmers #supportsmallbusiness #fruit #vegetables #savemoney #health #healthylifestyle

08.01.2022 Have you ever seen a purple carrot? How about white, yellow, red or black? Most people haven't, even though such carrots have existed for hundreds of years. They are available in our hub & are called Rainbow carrots. Carrots do not have to be orange. As a matter of fact, the orange carrot is a relative newcomer on the scene. 07.01.2022 Backyard Growers supplying Box Divvy! I'm so excited about this new initiative from Box Divvy.... One of the aims this year is to start neighbours growing and selling into their local Box Divvy Food Hub. We hope that backyard growers will eventually contribute 10-20% of our food supply, which will bolster food security at a time of rapid climate change and possible future pandemics. The way to change things is to let communities run it. Part of the requirements is to have your soil tested for the presence of heavy metals by the VegeSafe program. We ask that you pay $40 to cover the costs of the soil analysis, time involved, data privacy security and laboratory consumables. Once you receive the certificate, we will refund you $20. Backyard growers can apply to supply their produce to one or more hubs in a region by emailing [email protected] #fruit #vegetables #supportlocal #foodhub #foodcoop #farmfresh #savemoney #supportlocalfarmers #boxdivvy #freshfood #lowfoodmiles #reduceyourcarbonfootprint #noplasticpackaging #nutrition #healthy #healthyeating #biodynamicfarming #permaculture #vegetarian #vegan #earnanincome #workfromhome #parttimeincome #farmtoplate #eattherainbow

06.01.2022 FREE RANGERS TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE Climate change is making it tough for our growers, losing crops and suffering lower yields due to unpredictable and extreme weather conditions. To secure our food supply we must spread our risk and get a lot more people growing food, and selling any excess produce to local communities through Box Divvy. ... Panania Free Rangers is a not for profit, dedicated to helping people set up backyard growing operations. To help fund their activities Box Divvy and Hunter Valley eggs will donate $0.50 from every pack sold to Panania Free Rangers. Hunter Valley eggs is also committed to free range. Their hens roam free on farms that stock no more than 950 hens per hectare. That's 10 times more space than most free range supermarket brands. Send me a message if you want more information about becoming a backyard grower & selling into our food hub. 05.01.2022 Every Wednesday our 41 hub members vote for 10 items they would like to see in their basic start order. On Thursday morning I view the results & add the 8 - 10 items with the most votes. As a hub we buy boxes directly from the farmer which is how we save so much money on our orders. The Box Divvy system has some clever algorithms that divide the box up and our hub members receive quantities based on their household size. Our members are notified by email that their order i...s ready to customise & they can delete up to 3 items. Easy peasy & literally takes our hub members 5 minutes to complete. 01.01.2022 M A R K E T U P D A T E S T O N E F R U I T Reports from several growers north of Sydney and in southern NSW suggest this is going to be a strong season in terms of picking volumes ... On top of that, exports are expected to decline because of Covid-19 and high airfreight cost, so the domestic supply should be ample.
