24.01.2022 To help with choosing Wish List here is some up to market details: Asparagus are ON for this week, and they’re going to be better than some of the ones we had last week. Still under $3 a bunch Steve and Sam Grima in Horsley Park will be picking loads of celeriac this week. This is one of the slowest-growing vegetable around, taking about 5 months to reach maturity. For the next few weeks, they’re the cheapest ($5.44 each compared with $9 in Harris Farm) you’ll see the...m at this season. Celeriac has the characteristic celery flavour, but in a creamy format. Mashed with potato (50/50), it’s both refreshing and creamy. Rockmelons are back: they eat well and will be around $2.50 each for small to medium-sized fruit Red capsicums are expected to spike a little for the next few weeks: work on $4.50/kg (still half price compared with Woolies) Mushroom supply has improved, and prices should ease to around $13/kg Lebanese cucumbers have eased back further: expect to pay no more than $4.30/Kg and they will be glamour Finally, leeks have been creeping up in price but we’ve managed to source some local supply from Sam and Steve Grima in Horsley Park. They will have less white stalk than the ones we usually get, but they end up being way better value at around $1.40 each Great value Queensland berries are continuing their run for much longer than usual: by September, Caboolture and Bundaberg can get too hot for strawberries, but daytime temperatures in the mid-20’s forecast for at least the next week - are perfect for producing sweet strawberries with a good shelf-life. Expect to pay under $2 a punnet for strawberries and under $3 for blueberries Charlie Vella in Freemans Reach still has plenty of large cauliflowers ($2.72), celery ($2.49), iceberg lettuce ($1.42). 22.01.2022 Papaya and lime are both in this week's starting order. A sprinkling of lime juice over fresh cut papaya adds a delicious zest to the mild flavour of the payaya (and gets rid of the slightly odd smell .....). Papaya is a great source of fibre and limes are also rich in antioxidants. Enjoy!

22.01.2022 Hey Pittwater. All herbs are super-cheap right now: $2.95 for basil, whilst coriander, mint and parsley are just $1.36 a bunch. Scatter different herbs basil, coriander, parsley or mint over your salad. This week lebanese cucumbers are only $2.43 a kilo, avocados are $1.78 and lemons are also still super cheap. Here ya go! https://www.taste.com.au//80459823-e744-4654-87cf-96be053e

21.01.2022 Here's such a cute story....and true. Charlie Vella’s son Jason grows zucchini flowers in Freemans Reach just outside of Sydney to the North. There's currently a labour shortage (no backpackers), he has asked his daughter Charlie to help pick(seen here)... Ok, she’s only 3 years old, but very deft when it comes to picking these delicate flowers. In fact, she’s picking in such quantities that Grandpa Charlie has decided to take the tray price down to $3.74. Family farms A recipe below. #zuzcchiniflowers #freemansreach #familyfarms

20.01.2022 Hey Pittwater. Raspberries have come down in a hurry. They should be $4.76 a punnet and they’re very good eating, so let's get some in this weekend! Are you noticing a bit of a trend here.... I freaking love berries! I like to keep things simple and just chuck them on my breakfast but here are some suggestions to tempt you....... #summerberries #boxdivvy #pittwaterhub #scotlandisland #raspberries #buylocal #boxsharing... https://www.bbcgoodfood.com///top-10-things-do-raspberries See more

19.01.2022 Market update Quick update with some price changes and new produce listings: NEW (or back): Blueberries and raspberries have improved in quality they’re still a little pricey ($5.32 per punnet) but worth it (and BTW: $7.99 in Harris Farm)... Asparagus: some Victorian growers always have a late-summer flush this time of year, just for a few weeks. Great quality at $2.66 a bunch Steve Grima will have yellow zucchini next week small 5kg box with about 25 pieces, so should be easy to get across the line. Around $6/kg Roma tomatoes are back still over $5/kg, but we suspect they’ll come back soon GONE Figs have had some rain in the growing regions and won’t last the distance so we’re taking a break for now Price DOWN: Bananas, cabbages, cherry and grape tomatoes, snowpeas and sugarsnap have all come down by 10-20% Kim and Laks from Golden Fields have a glut of chillies, so we’re helping them out: long green chillies will be around $5-6/kg and long red chillies around $8/kg. Jayne will be doing a post over the next day or so (and no, chillies do not protect you from Covid-19, but they ARE a great source of vitamin C. Did you know they freeze well? We’ll show you some other ways to preserve chillies for a rainy day). Price UP: There is still a shortage of celery and leek, so they’re best avoided for now especially with so much great produce at low prices around In our Starting Order this week: Apples - Pink Lady Avocadoes - Hass Bananas - Cavendish Beans - Green Blueberries Broccoli - Regular Mushrooms - Buttons Onion - Red Pears - Packham Potatoes (washed) - Red Desiree

18.01.2022 Cheap zucchini, eggplant and Roma tomatoes can mean only 1 thing: ratatouille! I've made it easy for you as these are all in this weeks start order. Zucchini from Charlie Vella and Raymond Camilleri both in Freemans Reach will be $2.50/Kg Eggplant from SA locals won’t start until next month - will be $3.60/Kg Roma tomatoes are still $2.43/Kg, the cheapest they’ve been all year... https://www.taste.com.au//18a4a44d-b2d3-44e7-8b40-224277aa

17.01.2022 Ok Starting Order published. Groceries are there See PANTRY Remember we need to hit $75 as a group to get them. Order pay this week get Wednesday 16th September.. Many thanks for your Wish Lists. We are now up to 7 voting Woo! Keep it up. Did you know that when I publish the order you can go in and do the following week Wish List. It will be empty. So vote now if you want.... What's in the Starting Order? (* some small households will have a zero on some but will likely get something once other members adjust their orders). Apples - Pink Lady Avocadoes - Hass Bananas - Cavendish Carrots - Loose (Orange) Cucumber - Lebanese Potatoes (sweet) - Kumera Silverbeet Snowpeas Strawberries Tomatoes - Baby Truss (Red) Cheers

15.01.2022 NEWS that is important. Next week out Start Order will be on Saturday. This is a permanent change. Nothing else changes. The reason for the change:... It gives you, the member, an extra day to decide what you might want in your order. It gives Box Divvy more time to work with growers on what they have available for the coming week. So attached is a new order cycle process. You NEW time Friday 9pm you must have * suspend orders * increase household size if want more in Start Order OR * Do Wish List Vote. After Friday 9pm we cannot remove or add orders. This means I will publish on a Saturday, then you have until Sunday 9pm to do order. Cheers Jayne

14.01.2022 So local. Cabbage grown in Wilberforce. The celery in Freeman’s Reach. Doing great things as a community changing how we shop. Thanks Box Divvy Woy Woy for showing these.... #scotlandisland See more

13.01.2022 Local is important. Let’s support our growers. Thanks sister Hub in Emu Plains for this information. #scotlandisland #pittwater #bayview #churchpoint #monavale

13.01.2022 It's all about the berries this week with strawberries enjoying one of the longest Qld seasons on record because of the continued mild weather in Caboolture and Bundaberg. Strawberries are expected to stay under $2 a punnet, and blueberries under $3 a punnet. This season will come to an end soon so get them while you can at these amazing prices.

10.01.2022 Oh my, this market is just filled with incredible value driven by benign weather across the eastern seaboard. These conditions never last, so we may as well take full advantage and by eating loads of fresh fruits and veg, you are actually helping farmers shift a mountain of great food. So get tucked into the snow peas and Roma tomatoes!

10.01.2022 Asparagus are bountiful and cheap this week at around $1.80 a bunch. They look so pretty roasted on a plate and always feel a bit indulgent to me. Simply roast and drizzle with olive oil - or something a bit more fancy....... #boxdivvy #springgreens #scotlandisland #asparagus #pittwaterhub

08.01.2022 Market Update On the whole, the market looks fairly stable but there’s a few pockets of sharply rising prices you need to be aware of, and only a few moderate price falls to offset: UP... We’ve had an incredible run with Panama passionfruit over the past few months, but this is coming to an end: prices have risen by close to 50% to around $1.25 each Continental eggplant also had a dramatic rise, after easing back for most of last week: it’s back up to $6.80/Kg. Still, it’s $9-10/kg in the supermarket Hass avocado prices have been predicted to rise for a little while, and they’re starting to take off. Nothing dramatic yet ($1.36 each), but there are signs that local growers from Stuart Point to Comboyne are picking less than they were a month ago, so we’re anticipating further increases over the coming weeks. DOWN Afourer mandarins have come down a little to $2.12/Kg. There’s still plenty of supply left this season (famous last words) Kiwi fruit has eased back for now to just over $5/Kg, but the season hasn’t much left to run Garlic’s yo-yo prices are continuing down today to $13.60/Kg (but who knows what tomorrow might bring?) At least the Lebanese cucumbers are staying put

07.01.2022 Pittwater Hub, this is our scheduled week for Belicious spices. So far I've tried the Masala and Mexican and I love them both. Dukkah is the latest additional to their range. It's a mix of seeds, nuts and spices originating in the middle east Egypt in particular. Enjoy with your favourite bread, dipped in olive oil and balsamic. Or use to create a crispy coating on fish or chicken The 120g jar costs $10.

06.01.2022 For 1 week only, Shepherds is bringing back their Halloween Pumpkin Cob. This 400g cob is fun to eat as is, but even better fun when hollowed out and filled with a pumpkin dip (see recipe below). It’s available this week only for just $4.94 (Shepherds sell it online for $6). Halloween Food: Dip in Pumpkin Cob Recipe Shepherd's Pumpkin Cob Loaf 500g diced pumpkin (1cm cubes)... 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 teaspoons ground cumin 2 tablespoons Greek or Natural (unsweetened yogurt) 2 tablespoons raw cashews Fresh coriander (2 tablespoons finely chopped + extra to serve) Salt and Pepper, Olive Oil Microwave pumpkin with a teaspoon of water for a few minutes, until par-cooked. In a large frypan over medium heat, fry garlic and cumin in olive oil for 1 minute, then add pumpkin. Fry until soft, then remove. Add pumpkin, cashews and the yogurt into a blender and whiz until it forms a thick dip consistency - not too pureed, a few chunks are nice! Add chopped coriander, salt and pepper to taste, and stir through with a spoon. Hollow out the Pumpkin Cob carefully (retaining the bread from inside for dipping) and bake lightly until crispy. Remove the cob from the oven, leave to cool until it's just warm and then gently pour and spoon in the dip. Decorate with a big sprig of coriander and serve on a platter with the lightly toasted bread chunks, plus vegetable sticks for dipping.

05.01.2022 Reports from several growers both north of Sydney and in southern NSW suggest this is going to be a strong season in terms of stone fruit picking volumes. On top of that, exports are expected to decline because of Covid-19 and high airfreight cost, so the domestic supply should be ample. This is not good news for growers who are trying to recover from last year’s bad season, but you can do your bit by buying A LOT of peaches and nectarines once the season gets on its way.... Expect the first peaches and nectarines to appear by late October. I think it's time for a song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvAnQqVJ3XQ

04.01.2022 For those of you who love a serious leek, we’ve managed to source some local supply from Sam and Steve Grima in Horsley Park. They will have less white stalk than the ones we usually get, but they end up being way better value at around $1.40 each. Currently in splits - we just need 7 more onboard today to get these over the line

02.01.2022 Hi All, NEWS Please get your wish list in now. Nikki Gibson on the Island will take over running the communications for the Hub.... Welcome Nikki. Please direct all communications to her.
