25.01.2022 ***ACT Tournament - Saturday 26 September - Gold Creek High School*** Boxing ACT will hold its first tournament since the virus outbreak - "The Lock-down Knock-down"! The event will be open to athletes from other states/territories unless they are from locations designated by the ACT Government as a designated hotspot (currently includes all of Victoria and Greater Sydney area). All boxers and coaches must have a clearance from Boxing ACT or their relevant State/Territory Me...mber Association. Nominate online at https://www.boxingact.org.au/events/57198/ as soon as possible to allow matching. Nominations close Sunday 20 September. Due to the risk of further outbreaks, spectator numbers will be strictly controlled to meet social distancing restrictions. The tournament will be split into multiple sessions, with a capped numbers of spectators per session. Tickets for each session will be available online once the capacity for each session is confirmed. No tickets will be available at the door. 24.01.2022 Boxing ACT wishes to thank Sport and Recreation Canberra for its Community Sport and Recreation Development Program Grant. The grant funding has been used to purchase a new electronic scoring system to support judging of our events. We look forward to putting it to good use at our next tournament on the 5th of December at Gold Creek High School. Nominations are being accepted now via the website at www.boxingact.org.au/events

23.01.2022 This week Boxing ACT completed its introduction to boxing program conducted for the girls at Gold Creek High School throughout Term 4. It was great fun coaching such a great group of dedicated and enthusiastic students. The program teaches basic skills to help spark an interest in the sport and hopefully inspire some students to join a local gym and continue their boxing journey. We will be expanding the Gold Creek High School program next term at the request of the studen...ts, including more advanced classes to run alongside the introductory class where we will start to include contact-based drills. Boxing ACT will also commence delivering a free 8 - 10 week Introduction to Boxing program in 2021. The program will be open to all ACT women and girls that are keen to come and try the sport, led by Boxing ACT's team of accredited female coaches. Further details on the program, including how to apply, will be published on Facebook and the Boxing ACT webpage over the coming weeks.

In this skills ID video we mainly look at the Women’s 75kg Gold medallist from the 2019 World Championships and in particular how she nearly exclusively keeps her feet a fixed distance apart when engaging with her opponent by bouncing up and down and forwards and backwards. But first we take a look at the India 48kg Silver medallist at the same event using a very similar technique of attempting to maintain the integrity of her base as she moves forwards and backwards by shifting both feet at the same time.

Boxing ACT is running a free 8-week introduction to boxing program that will equip women and girls with the basic skills and knowledge to join a gym and continue their participation in the sport. Classes will cover basic movement, punching and defence, and provide information on training and competing in amateur events. Come along to experience the fitness, coordination, confidence and resilience benefits as...sociated with boxing, and make some great friends along the way. Classes will be held for 8 weeks on Sunday afternoons during ACT School Term 1, and locations will rotate through affiliated gyms to provide an introduction to the facilities available around Canberra. All classes will be run by women with official coaching qualifications, in a fun, friendly and inclusive environment. The program is open to girls over 10 years and women of all ages, and all equipment is provided. 17.01.2022 Judging Course - Tuesday 25 August The Judging Course is recommended both for individuals that wish to officiate at tournaments as a Referee/Judge, or for coaches and boxers that want to develop a better understanding of how bouts are scored. The course involves two hours of classroom-based theory, followed by a practical assessment at the next Inter-club Sparring Day.... Attendance at the course is free. Participants should not attend if they exhibit cold or flu-like symptoms, or if they have been in contact with a Covid-infected person or hotspot in the previous 14 days. 14.01.2022 Boxing ACT has received its new training gloves to support its introductory programs being delivered to ACT schools, and its new program being introduced in 2021 that will provide a free weekly class to introduce women and girls to the sport - more details to be released shortly! 13.01.2022 Big thanks to everyone that helped make our last tournament for the year such a success. We had a great range of bouts with boxers from throughout ACT and NSW, with some as young as 10 stepping into the ring for the first time. As always, we couldn't have done it without the efforts of volunteers to help setup, run and pack up the tournament. Looking forward to an even bigger and better program of events in 2021!

12.01.2022 Gym Victus is hosting the next Inter-Club Sparring on Saturday 31 October. Inter-club sparring provides an opportunity for boxers registered with Boxing ACT and the surrounding region to spar together. Bouts are refereed but no winner is announced, providing valuable experience for boxers to develop skills, tactics and fitness. Boxers registered with Boxing NSW may be able to participate subject to ACT Government restrictions in force on the day.... Light sparring options are also available for boxers that are currently lacking form or fitness, or if even matches cannot be found. All participants must have a current membership with Boxing ACT (or other member association for interstate guests), either as a Boxer, Coach or Non-competing Individual. Please note that online nomination for the event is essential to allow allocation to a session and ensure compliance with COVID restrictions. Unfortunately spectators are not permitted at this stage - boxers may only be accompanied by a coach (and parent/guardian for U18s). The most common punch to be thrown on its own is of course, the jab, in all it’s variations, that is in attack or defence, whilst moving in any direction, leading off or as a counter. More skilled boxers are entirely comfortable throwing a straight or bent-arm punch with either hand to the head or body depending on whichever is most appropriate at that time. In this skills ID video we have compiled a number of excellent examples of boxers demonstrating throwing single punches with either hand in a variety of situations.

09.01.2022 Looking for new female coaches! Boxing ACT is proud to announce Project Tigress - its new Female Participation Plan. Part 1 will increase female leadership of the sport by offering scholarships for up to 5 women to complete their Level 1 Coaching accreditation. The scholarship will cover the costs associated with obtaining the accreditation, including:... - completing the pre-requisite Basic First Aid Course, - the Level 1 Coaching Course, and - full competition membership. That's over $500 of support per participant! Applicants must be women over 18 years of age and able to obtain an ACT Government Working With Vulnerable People Card. It should be a great afternoon/evening of boxing, with almost 30 bouts on the card. Timings: - Weigh-in and Doctor: 10am - 12:30pm - Technical Brief to Coaches: 12:30pm - ringside in venue - Session 1: 2pm - 5pm - Session 2: 5:30pm - 8:30pm Boxers are to bring their Competition Book (with doctor's signature indicating fitness to box) and evidence of blood test results to the weigh-in. Male contestants must be cleanly shaven for the weigh-in with no beards or moustaches. Coaches accompanying boxers under 18 years of age are to bring their ACT Working With Vulnerable People card or NSW/VIC equivalent. 03.01.2022 Thanks to Gym Victus for hosting our Inter-club sparring today, and to Prestige Boxing and Northside Pure Boxing for making the trip down to Canberra.
