25.01.2022 My latest box. This one is a large jewellery box 300 x 250 x 140mm with a drawer and movable tray. Made from Queensland Maple with a veneered top of American Beech and Silver Ash and a decorative inlay.

25.01.2022 After a long break, largely related to moving house, it is back to box making.

24.01.2022 This is one of my recent boxes. It is made from Jarrah and Huon Pine size 190 x 130 x 70 and has an interesting corner post dovetail design. It is for sale at Maroondah Handicrafts, East Ringwood. www.facebook/Maroondah handicrafts Inc.

20.01.2022 This is the box I started last week. It is made from Jarrah with a Banksia insert and an inlay of Mountain Ash and constructed using finger joints

19.01.2022 A Tasmanian box. Huon Pine with Blackheart Sassafras top

18.01.2022 This is made from Huon Pine with an interesting top. The bit in the middle came from the same plank. I could have thrown it out, but decided to make a feature of it!

15.01.2022 Having returned from our holiday in Europe, it is back to the shed to make some more boxes. The three below are nearing completion. The first is made from Victoria Ash with a veneered top of Queensland Walnut and an inlay border. The second is Fijian Mahogany with an American Cherry insert and the last one is a square box of Victorian Ash and silky Oak.

14.01.2022 This box is smaller than the last one, 200 x 130 x 70mm. Made from Queensland Maple with the top Silky oak; the knot in the centre makes an interesting feature. The joinery is dovetail made with the Gifkins jig.

13.01.2022 This one is made from Fijian Kauri, Red Gum and American Beech, using the Incra dovetailing jig.

13.01.2022 This is a series of photographs showing how I make a top for a box. The first one shows the components - Jarrah and Mountain Ash with a Banksia insert. Next is the framing jig designed by Roger Gifkin, inventor of the famous Gifkins Dovetail Jig. The fame is placed in the jig and a dry run to make sure everything fits, next the glue up, and the finished top after sanding off. And finally the box that will have the top. Next week, I will put up a picture of the finished box.

13.01.2022 These are some of my boxes, including the ones that won prizes at the Royal Melbourne Show.

12.01.2022 These are my last boxes for 2015. Both have been made using the Incra fence. Note the interesting joint - it is probably the most diffucult I have done, but once finished, it is quite effective. The first one is a meduim sized box made from jarrah, silver ash and American white maple, and the second is an A4 size document box made from afromosia, American white maple and jarrah. Afromosia is similar to teak and comes from Western Africa.

12.01.2022 IN THE SHED. These are two boxes I am currently making. One near completion is a large box, 300 x 250 x 125 with a draw. It is made from Queensland Maple and the top is a veneer of American Beech with a decorative inlay. The other side of the veneer is Silver Ash. The other box I have just started, much smaller 200 x 130 x 65, also Queensland Maple. Both are made using the Gifkins Jig, which you can see in the background.

11.01.2022 Having a bit of a rest from box making this weekend - doing a bed for the annex in our caravan. However, this is a six sided box nearing completion, made from Victorian Ash with the top of Silky Oak. When you make a box, first the sides are constructed, then the top, and the bottom is added last, usually 3mm plywood. The three photographs show the box viewed from an angle, then upside down with the bottom ready to be inserted, and finally the bottom inserted and glued. The next stage is to sand off the bottom, and cut out the lid.

06.01.2022 This is a medium sized box, 280mm x 175mm x 105mm high made from old red gum with the top with various recycled timbers. It also has a removable tray with storage for rings.

05.01.2022 Write something... Not much to do with box making, but this is my new boat purchased a couple of weeks ago. Long lazy days of summer fishing.......

04.01.2022 These are a pair of boxes I made for a friend. One is Red Gum and Victorian Ash and the other is the same two species reversed; the lighter one has a silver clasp and the darker one gold.
