25.01.2022 Everyone Wants Respect... ok not everyone but most... My observation is that, while respect is often asked for or even expected, the sheer fact that work is done in anticipation of the achievement of the success, is why often it isnt rewarded or offered. This work is done without engagement, without intuitive questioning or inquisitive anticipation. ... Respect must be must be given before it can be received... not blindly, not without questioning... it is part of a conversation. Another feature of respect is that it can be fleeting. Its not something that you hand on to your children or your workers, it is something others give you gradually and can take it away instantly should you disappoint, behave inconsistently, criticise without solution in any of, probably, sixty or seventy ways.

25.01.2022 Business planning is all about knowing where you are Are your solutions (products or services) in the start-up, mid-life, mature or the end of their lifecycle. All our cycles are getting shorter, the environment is evolving faster, we need to be listening more intently to our teams, clients and prospects. The only thing staying constant is that great plans are based on a platform of TRUTH. ... http://bigpaddleco.com.au/

25.01.2022 Every leaders challenge... Is to create change with the real opportunity being to build focus through metrics and delegation. Business and science have massive correlations across questioning, hypothesising, testing restructuring, retesting and the loop continues... be prepared for it not ... Improvement can be accelerated with the strength and incisiveness of setting and testing your hypothesis every result will create a fresh perspective. Each result creates a potential pathway that will have its own set of metrics and challenges. Just recognise it is a pathway, not a roadway, not a highway, but, at best, a blueprint to be challenged. A good plan starts with where you are right now... it is about testing, challenging, defining and then ensuring there is someone responsible for owning and pushing through the pathway.

24.01.2022 Protect your sources, that's S.O.U.R.C.E.S not S.A.U.C.E.S! In spite of what a son-in-law may believe should be refrigerated...... but that’s another story. Can we encourage contradiction, questioning and, my favourite, rigorous candour? Whoever is questioning you now, is probably your most valued advisor.... Those who challenge and offer solutions, will add significant value to yourself and your business. Crazy Ideas, generally are only crazy to you, the originator believes and sees a solution, and it takes time, courage and thought to argue and become stronger through those discussions. And test the response; Yes, and....... rather than yes, but.....

23.01.2022 Growth is about Profiling current and prospective customers better who is buying, why theyre buying.... no really why, who will they buy it from if they dont buy from you, and most importantly Why will they move to another source?... http://bigpaddleco.com.au/

22.01.2022 So, theres an opportunity to become engaged... Then it is about you creating a picture a positive picture of what the future could look like with your product or your service in their needs mix. You are always starting from a position of discomfort or friction in the mind of this potential partner. Recognise that change, for them, is risky. This means the most critical thing you can show them is the value or reduced risk of changing. ... You do this by understanding their challenges, their environment, their superiors and their corporate expectations.

21.01.2022 The joy in what we do We get to choose to work with passionate people and deliver real, future facing services and products. Real people who make timemay force themselves to contemplate what happens next, and most importantly, have a passion for life within and without work. ... Consider that if youre not doing it for these reasons right now, then you need to move on. The reality is that life is way too short to be unhappy in your work. http://bigpaddleco.com.au/

20.01.2022 Success is about Trends... The enduring trends evolve constantly, but not as quickly as the flashes so avoid the flashes! And you do all of this by listening to the decision makers. ... http://bigpaddleco.com.au/

20.01.2022 When did you last drop your business into a fish tank Great story about Steve Jobs and one of his iPods development tools. His engineers emphatically denied that there was anything more they could do to reduce the size of the prototypeSteve then, with the appropriate amount of respect, picked it up, walked over to a fish tank, dropped it in and watched the bubbles rise out of the proto-type. ... We all need to know where the air is? We often get blinded by really good products and services, and fail to notice that the market continues to move. http://bigpaddleco.com.au/

20.01.2022 Leaders draw pictures and tell stories And invariably, these pictures and stories develop and inspire, grow and create solutions within their teams. Managers do much less. Their jobs are to focus on the day to day, the practical delivery of current expectations. ... Restless managers (pre-leaders) are delivering in the day to day but invariably creating time to think about the broader solutions that are going to be required the day after tomorrow. The first and most critical attribute of a leader is that they create/allocate time to think about whats coming rather than just respond about what theyve got at the moment. http://bigpaddleco.com.au/

19.01.2022 Stuff has changed ...everything has changed, the accuracy of the information theyre getting from third and fourth parties, the reality of our definition of our clients issues, and where are they getting their fake news from.

17.01.2022 The Good... the Bad The good is the questioning of current expectations, starting with yourself then your clients, then your team. The bad is when you stop before creating a plan to address what those discussions have indicated need doing. And a plan is about metrics, it is about identifying when you should be celebrating and when you should be pushing harder.... The chances are you know where you want to be in five years time the challenge is putting substantive activities in place that immediate affects the trajectory of your business. To be really good, tell a colleague or the team leaders within your team what your plans are for the next three months and get them to live and execute them with you!

17.01.2022 Millennials are just like me WRONG! Nothing could be further from the truth. They are the biggest generation this world has ever supported, they are the largest consumers of data in the world and theyre searching your service, your product, your offer. When it comes to talking to them, Michael McQueen in How to Prepare Now for Whats Next gives the killer advice ... Market through them, not to them.

17.01.2022 How will you re-design your go to market strategy given All the stuff you know now, what your competitors are doing, the research and development you are undertaking, where your clients are getting their information, and have their values shifted since you initially defined your go to market question?

15.01.2022 Are you LEANING in? If youre not leaning in, everyone can see that youre not if you are, everyone can see it and is more likely to lean in with you. How do you LEAN in......you need to get inquisitive, build solutions, talk them through and adjust them.

14.01.2022 Have a hackathon... It doesnt matter whether you are in defence, finance, law, health, agriculture whatever. Get a bunch of curious challenging people in the room and ask them what they would do to do what you do better.

13.01.2022 Building Relationships The most critical part of this process is that it is one person at a time. Equally simply, it is about adding value to that person, providing relevance and opportunity, whether it be within your team or as a prospective customer.... The sad part is that no one is hanging out to meet you or review your product. Theyve got too many other things on their plate to worry about what you want! First step is engagement between you and them. Finding common ground, common opportunities, common interests, common values if theyre there, you can build on them. If theyre not, you probably cant. Be realistic with your analysis and judgement, and move on when appropriate... did we talk about testing?

13.01.2022 If you had made a list in June 2019... What would you have wanted to change by June 2019? Is it about your business development, plan, engagement and outcomes?... Internalised continuous improvement targeting best practice within the sales and manufacturing spaces? Heightened negotiations with key supplier partners in both development and commitment to long term relationships based on shared value? Clearer engagement and deliverables from key managers and therefore their teams, so that they are truly across whats expected of them and when its has got to be delivered by? If these are still on your plate, choose one of them and create a plan to address it by Friday week! Because everything we do today creates tomorrows history!

12.01.2022 Who chooses your growth path? Its usually done by one or two groups. The best is when your customers, consumers and advocates create your path. The worst is when you leave it for your competitors. ... http://bigpaddleco.com.au/

12.01.2022 Resilience and propulsion This is all we need in our workplace and both are relatively easy to embrace. It is about valuing and re-evaluating how you judge your successes and your objectives areif youre focusing on others and excluding yourself, then theres a major issue.... Balance is highly achievable provided realism is at the heart of the equation. This isnt about settling for what, at one time, you would have considered less than a full solution, it is about developing solutions that fit what, where and when you want to move too. Its never about what others think, it is about you and honesty. http://bigpaddleco.com.au/

12.01.2022 Are we politicians or leaders? Do we believe we have an entitlement to tenure? If we do, we are no better than, unfortunately, the vast of majority of politicians were trying to select from right now. The vast majority of current politicians, believe being in the house is all they need to be in reality, as it is for all effective leaders and managers and workers, it is about their presence.... In presence we are talking about leaning in, creating solutions, building plans, building accountability and being measured against the impact that we/they make, rather than the discussion that they think theyre having.

12.01.2022 Our Mantra for 2019 OK there is Three! 1. Identifying and smoothing out friction within our business and between us and our clients. 2. Being disruptive internally and externally... aggressively seeking out improvements in engagement.... 3. Self-cannibalisation what will you do in 2019 that will take the place of what youre doing now? http://bigpaddleco.com.au/

12.01.2022 Planning for ...Ooooooops If you want to have planning for 2019 drafted by the 15th of December, but not sure where youll find the time... call the Big Paddle Company now. http://bigpaddleco.com.au/

11.01.2022 The Big Paddle has changed its business model We are now seeking out friction, disruption and self-cannibalisation if you dont change your model then who will and why will clients and customers wait for you to catch up?

11.01.2022 Good intentions (how to be on time)... this is worth it! You probably know people who are late. Often. They dont want to be late. In fact, their good intentions are probably the reason that they are late. They might try one technique or another, and even apologise for being late, and yet it happens again.... There is one reason and one amplifying factor. The amplifying factor is that when theyre late, people wait for them. You might notice that things that leave on time (commuter trains, airplanes, live TV shows etc) almost never have a crowd of people showing up five or ten minutes late cursing out the system. For those things, the things that are known to leave on time, they manage to show up. Thats because their good intentions are not welcome here. And the reason? The reason is that in every interaction, they want to connect a bit more, respect the other persons ideas and contribute in that moment. They do that by spending their most precious resource on their behalf. Whats happening is that they are looking for a magical way to get more minutes in the day. Of course, the person theyre meeting with doesnt need five more minutes of their time. They need five more hours of their time. But it feels like giving them five minutes one doesnt have is a way of showing them that they care. The alternative is a simple as it is difficult: Say no. Say it without rushing and without stress. Im sorry, our time is up. An overloaded truck isnt a more efficient way to move gravel (or anything else). And when you overload your day by treating time as squishy based on how much you care, youve just become inefficient and thus disrespectful. Lots of other things in our life arent squishy. Gravity, for example, or the solidity of dry wall. They are what they are. So is time if you let it. The hard part about being on time is standing up and moving on. But the cost of being squishy is that youre not only disrespecting the next person, youre stressed all the time. Stand up and walk out. People will learn, and theyll end up respecting you for it, because its not personal. Just as its not personal when the train leaves on time. The alternative, which is squishiness, is personal. Because if you like someone, youre willing to be even more late than usual. Times up. http://bigpaddleco.com.au/ Also published on Seths Blog: https://seths.blog/2019//good-intentions-how-to-be-on-time/

10.01.2022 How are you going with sorting this out? Its simple, have you got your sorting process sorted? What do you really want from whom, by when and do you have some ideas on how.... or not?... Focus on what you need, and not what you want to build the solution around. Verification, capability, capacity all come after youve decided what you want. So, dont be constricted by current resources, rather build a solution thats going to provide longevity and growth potential for not only yourself but also your business. http://bigpaddleco.com.au/

10.01.2022 Anagrams I Love Them... NOT! One struck me recently GROW G is for goals, as big as you want them but with appropriate lead times so they can be measured ... R is for reality you can fall into; Seemed like a good idea at the time this is where you go without a thoughtful examination of your offer, your market and your completion. Or a good plan will start with where you are right now and why.....then it is about testing, challenging, defining and then ensuring there is someone responsible for owning and pushing through the pathway. O is for outcomes that were planned for, and wrapped into the plans that youve been working to. W is for Wrap up, which is (sorry, I was going to say, the most important stage but obviously its not) the opportunity to learn from the activities youve consciously undertaken and build that learning into your next round of plans. Thanks to the Institute of Leaders and Managers, and specifically Peter Cohen for his Career Doctor article in the February Issue.

09.01.2022 What is engagement for... It’s no different than engagement for Baby Boomers, Gen X and Ys because in business, family and community, it is about being valued. Being valued leads to respect filled relationships which leads to personal growth, involvement, participation and the opportunity to guide. ... There’s no question that the way you value the generations, changes, and that is the art. 07.01.2022 Do you manage by fault or fact? With the amount of pressure thats on us these days, often its easiest to manage by looking for fault. Step back, talk to people and get the factsusually the reason we dont is because weve actually not supplied the resources that are required for the outcome that we expect. 05.01.2022 Failing slowly hurts a lot!! It is all about failing fast, frequently and, as Michael McQueen says, frugally. Its sad that a lot of established businesses are convinced that they are beyond needing to fail. Their focus is on unabridged success which cant abide failure. ... Businesses, whether they are big or small, need to reintroduce the capacity to fail and learn, and I think it was Edison who talked about if youre not failing, youre not learning. It happens from the head down or the bottom up, which ever way it goes, its up to you to make it happen.

03.01.2022 When you think about AI Artificial intelligence is ubiquitous it worries me because now I actually know something that is ubiquitous.
