20.01.2022 Science time! It’s called sourcing. K9s might be excellent at locating various scents like explosives, narcotics, electronics, accelerants, etc, but they were...n’t born knowing how to do it. Scent expands out from the object producing the smell. Like a fresh apple pie in the oven an entire house may smell like the pie, but the scent is originating from the oven itself. Through training, the dog is taught to get as close as possible to the source of a scent. This allows their human counterpart to identify where something may be hidden, like under particular seat in a car or in a specific drawer in a desk in an office. The process all starts with the scent the K9 is trained to identify in this case, placed in a tube in a specific corner of a box with 2 holes cut in it. The K9 is shown the box so they can explore it. Once they identify that the scent is coming from the box, they need to get as close to the source as possible in order to get their reward. The K9 can’t reach it, but they can determine which hole is closest to the tube. When they stick their nose in the hole on the correct side of the box, the handler passes their toy through the other hole teaching the K9 to get their nose as close to the source as possible, in order to get their reward. When watching a K9 source, keep an eye on their body language. After identifying where the odor is coming from, they will give a final response. This might be sitting or laying down. This action tells their handler they have located the source of the scent. The handler might say show me. This is the cue for the dog to put their nose as close as possible to the source (kind of like pointing but dogs don’t have index fingers). Once the exact location is identified and conveyed to the K9’s handler, it’s reward time! In the real world the same principal applies, just on a larger scale like a room with furniture, a van, a wall of lockers, or any number of environments. ----- We’re currently working on updating our project website.
