24.01.2022 We will remember them

24.01.2022 Be prepared if you are going to be burning off.

24.01.2022 Heaters and fire places need their space. Always keep anything flammable at least two metres away from your winter warmer to avoid them catching on fire. Be fire safe this winter.

20.01.2022 Ahead of warming conditions forecast over the weekend and with an expected peak on Monday, the TFS is enacting a permit embargo for southern Tasmania from 2am t...omorrow. The developing hot, dry conditions with strengthening winds forecast across the south of the state will increase the potential fire risk for many areas particularly the Upper Derwent, Midlands, Coal Valley, and southern parts of the East Coast which continue to experience below average rainfall and curing of vegetation, particularly grassland. The permit embargo will remain in place until midnight Monday 11 January at this stage. No permits will be issued through this period. Existing permits, or permit fires conducted over the last week are to be checked and fully extinguished where possible. Registration of burning of vegetation under 1 cubic metre will also be discouraged and TFS urges the public to take additional care with fires in the open, or operation of equipment that may cause accidental ignition of vegetation during this period. There are also campfire restrictions in place. For further information on these areas check https://parks.tas.gov.au/explore-/know-before-you-go/alerts TFS is continuing to monitor the daily update reports from the Bureau of Meteorology and we ask people to stay aware and up to date of the situation as there may be other restrictions and notifications over the next two days as the forecast develops. To report a fire, call Triple Zero (000) immediately. Check with your local council for additional burning restrictions. For information visit www.fire.tas.gov.au

19.01.2022 **Update 8 October 2020, 9.17am: This warning is no longer current. For a list of current warnings, visit https://bit.ly/3gE8W9M** The Bureau of Meteorology has... issued a Severe Weather Warning for Damaging Winds for people in King Island, Furneaux Islands, Western, North East, East Coast, North West Coast, Central Plateau and parts of Upper Derwent Valley, South East, Central North and Midlands Forecast Districts. Damaging East to Northeasterly Winds, averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h, are possible across much of Tasmania during Thursday. The strongest winds are expected during the morning and afternoon, with winds expected to ease by Thursday evening. Soils are very wet across much of Tasmania, and strong east to northeasterly winds are not common, so trees and infrastructure may be more susceptible than usual. A deep low pressure centre develops near King Island on Thursday and directs and strong, moisture-rich northeasterly airstream over Tasmanian throughout the day. The low moves over the state and away to the southeast during Friday. NOTE: A separate Severe Weather Warning for Heavy Rainfall has also been issued. Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Burnie, St Helens, Swansea, Strahan and Queenstown. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Supervise children closely. * Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings. * Manage pets and livestock. * Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment. * Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004. * Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving. * Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice. * For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500. For more information on this warning, visit https://bit.ly/3iw80Fi

18.01.2022 Always keep anything flammable at least two metres away from heaters or fireplaces to avoid them catching on fire.

18.01.2022 Here is a photo which shows it’s important to crawl down low and go go go if there was a fire in your home. The smoke layers are thicker and substantially hotter higher up. You have a much better chance of escaping a fire by crawling along the floor to an exit.

13.01.2022 This is worth a read coming in to the summer period!

12.01.2022 A reminder that as of today we have entered the fire permit period. If you wish to burn on your property, you can seek advice on how to get a free fire permit by calling TFS on 1800 000 699, or contact the permit officer in your local brigade.

11.01.2022 Working smoke alarms have alerted a family of six to a fire in their house in the early hours of this morning. Crews from Huonville, Grove and Franklin were cal...led to the family’s home at Agnes Street Ranelagh just before 4am to find a fire behind a wood heater which had been burning for some time in the wall cavity. The fire was caused by an incorrectly installed inbuilt wood heater, which over time had dried out the timber behind it causing it to eventually catch fire. The six occupants of the house, including two adults and four young children and teenagers, were woken by the smoke alarm, evacuated and alerted Tasmania Fire Service by calling Triple Zero. This is yet another example that working smoke alarms save lives by giving early warning when a fire starts in the home. A fire that starts in a wall cavity can burn undetected for some time. The family was woken by the smoke alarms after the fire eventually burnt through the internal wall and smoke entered the room. If they hadn’t been woken up the consequences could have been much worse, said Senior Station Officer Kier Wilson. Due to the early warning of the smoke alarm and the swift response from local crews, firefighters were able to contain the fire to the wall in the loungeroom, he said. The estimate of damage is $40,000. Tasmania Fire Service recommends smoke alarms are installed in every sleeping area, hallways and at the top of stairs, and that woodheaters are installed correctly.

11.01.2022 The weather at this time of the year is fickle. One day the weather can be perfect for burning and a couple of days later it's warmer and the wind picks up, ca...using those burns to escape. TFS has seen an increase in escaped burns on private property over the last couple of weeks. We encourage property owners to use favourable weather conditions to burn and reduce fuels to mitigate their bushfire risk, but this must be done safely . If you're planning to burn on your property you must be adequately prepared for the size of the burn and for the weather conditions you are burning in. You should also keep checking it in the days after it's been extinguished.

09.01.2022 If you're driving and see a stationary or slow moving emergency vehicle with lights flashing, you must slow to 40km/h when passing. Emergency service first res...ponders are there to help keep the community safe, do your part and slow down to keep them safe! For further info see: https://www.rsac.tas.gov.au/slow-down-for-emergency-vehicles

07.01.2022 Weather permitting the PWS will be undertaking planned burns across three burn units at Bridport commencing this Sunday 1 November 2020 and continuing through t...o and including Wednesday 4 November 2020. The total area of the burn will be approximately 23 hectares, and is likely to take three to four days to complete. Smoke may persist some days afterwards depending on wind conditions. During burning operations public access to this area will be restricted. Residents and visitors are advised that all access tracks to the Wild Flower Reserve and all walking tracks will be closed during and after the burn until it is safe for public access. The public is asked to remain well out of the burn site while the burn is taking place and for the following days until safety checks have been made along tracks and trails. Please comply with directions from staff or any signs if you are in the area. While the fire intensity will be low, it will generate flames, smoke and ash. People with medical conditions are advised to have a personal plan for avoiding smoke from the burn. Advice is available from the Department of Health and Human Services website or Asthma Australia. For further information contact the PWS Northern Region on phone 6777 2179. A map of planned burns is available on the Tasmania Fire Service website.
