24.01.2022 One of the best parts of our BPW events is welcoming our new members and hearing about them. This year with everything that's been going on we have missed being able to do this. Last Tuesday at our December event in Port Fairy we finally got to give Emma Scarborough her membership kit and an official welcome. And in even better news Emma is also now on our committee!

19.01.2022 We need more young women engaged in ITC to solve some of the biggest problems of our time because when engaged they thrive, societies, business and economies th...rive, too. According to Australia’s 2021 Digital Pulse Report, women make up only 29% of employment in technology in Australia, compared to 47.5% in similar occupations in the professional, scientific, and technical services (PST) industry. With only 1 in 5 IT graduates, women’s increasing access to technology-based subjects could influence this pipeline. The report states the importance of considering ways to encouraging women to move into technology through additional life-long learning courses. There just aren’t enough young women studying STEAM subjects which in turn diminishes the pipeline of female talent says Freda Miriklis, Chair CBWN. Increasing diversity would grow Australia’s economy by $1.8 billion each year on average, over the next 20 years. That’s an $11 billion opportunity for Australia’s economy in net present value (NPV) terms, creating almost 5,000 full time jobs on average each year. 18.01.2022 In a long fight for gender equality and inclusion, women have come a long way making their participation and presence evident in different social, economic, and... political sector. From a little to great progress, every field has encountered significant changes and so has the political domain. UN reports that as of 2015, women in every country in the world have the right to vote; the first nation to grant female suffrage was New Zealand in 1893, and the last country was Saudi Arabia in 2015. Today, several countries are led by females and some countries, such as Finland, also have a cabinet dominated by women. Yet, when we look deeper, we realize that despite such a long struggle, in 2020 too, we only have 4 countries with over 50 percent participation of women in the cabinet and parliament. While a lot of countries indicate a minimum of 30 percent participation, the question of mere representation over meaningful participation is still a concern. The question lies in why the progress is going at such a slow pace? Is it because women lack interest in politics or does the lack of adequate representation make them withdraw their interests? Thus, to tackle these questions and have an in-depth understanding, we bring to you a webinar on Women in Politics. We’re now calling for Expressions of Interest for a volunteer lay woman to join our ...SWH Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC). Applicants should not have any affiliation with SWH and not currently be engaged in medical, scientific, legal or academic work. The HREC provides ethical review for research projects to be conducted by employees, students and external researchers at SWH and other health services in the region. In undertaking this role, the HREC is guided by the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research. As a lay member, you’d be involved in ethical assessment of research from a community perspective. Commitment: This is a voluntary role and the successful applicant must comply with the SWH Volunteer Code of Conduct. Meetings are usually held bi-monthly on the first Monday of the month from 12.302pm at SWH. A video conferencing option is also available. Agenda and papers are sent electronically one week prior to each meeting. You’d be expected to review and provide feedback for the assigned items and participate in discussion wherever required. 09.01.2022 It was so great to hold our December event in person - not over Zoom! We went to Port Fairy to Limestone Gallery & Function Centre and ate at the fabulous Yani's Kitchen & Food Pop Up. As we do each December we also made a collection for Emma House to support their work supporting domestic violence victims.

Stepping down are Alison, Ebony, Bernie and Jane and we thank them for their efforts and know they are still valued club members. A warm welcome to our new committee members for 2021. 04.01.2022 We held our July meeting last Tuesday evening via Zoom where we heard from Jill Bourke about her role as the Coordinator of the West Warrnambool Neighbourhood House. Jill spoke about the challenges of her work and how COVID-19 has forced her to change the way she works and deals with people. While she spoke of the hardship this pandemic has caused she also shared with us the joy of meeting new people and forging new relationships that may never had happened if it wasn’t for the situation we are in. 03.01.2022 Around 10 years ago, artist and business woman Nicola Cerini was a guest speaker at BPW SW. She was know mainly for her beautiful handbags- practical but also stylish- which were decorated with Australian flora. Just recently Nicola has opened a shop in Ballarat. She's still designing and manufacturing lovely handbags and other beautiful things. If you are ever in Ballarat, be sure to pop in and say hello.
