If you employ anyone with a student loan debt you will need to ensure that you are withholding the correct amount of additional tax. If you are an employee with a student loan debt you should... check your next payslip to ensure that your employer is withholding the correct amount of additional tax to cover your repayments. The updated weekly, fortnightly and monthly study and training support tax tables can be found by clicking on the link below. There have been no changes to the standard tax tables. Feel free to contact one of our friendly staff if you have any questions.

13.01.2022 Working from home during COVID19? The ATO have introduced a temporary 80 cent per hour shortcut method for claiming the additional expenses relating to working from home during COVID19. The new method applies to the period from the 01/03/20 30/06/20 and covers expenses such as electricity, phone, internet, depreciation, ink, stationary, etc. If you plan on claiming home office expenses under this shortcut method you will need to keep a record of the number of hours that you... are working from home. Further information is available on the ATO website here: https://www.ato.gov.au//Suppo/Employees-working-from-home/

11.01.2022 The ATO are strongly encouraging taxpayers to wait a few weeks before lodging their tax returns this year. Firstly, under the new single touch payroll system, some employees will no longer receive payment summaries and are, instead, being told to access their annual income summary via their myGov account. For the 2018-19 financial year employers have up until 31 July 2019 to submit the finalisation declarations necessary to make their employees' income summaries 'tax ready' (...with that date set to change to 14 July for the 2019-20 year onwards). If you lodge your tax return before your income statement has been finalised, your employer could make changes that may mean you’ll have to lodge an amendment. In some cases, additional tax and interest may be payable. Another reason the ATO are advising against lodging your return too early this year relates to the new Low and Middle Income Tax Offset, which was announced in the budget to apply to the 2019 income year and could see eligible taxpayers receive an offset of up to $1,080. The legislation hasn’t, as yet, made it through parliament and the ATO have stated that they cannot process the new offset amounts until such time as the law is passed. They have said, however, that they will be able to automatically amend any returns assessed without the offset, if/when the law is changed. If you are unsure about whether your income statement has been finalised, or you have questions about the new offset, feel free to contact one of our friendly staff.
