25.01.2022 Most of the pictures that I make for myself are black and white. Colour always seems so ... distracting.

23.01.2022 Somewhere I've been recently. Surely one of the most evocative, dramatic, and beautiful places on the planet. Here the light is playing though thick clouds over Dusky Sound in New Zealand. More black and whites tk ...

23.01.2022 I took this picture on Tuesday evening, just as the week's political shenanigans were beginning. Little did I know that three days later Scott Morrison would be Australia's new PM.

23.01.2022 Photography is a great de-stressing tool. It's very meditative, very relaxing. At least I find it so. Here is tonight's de-stresser -- a pomegranate triptych.

22.01.2022 Meet the Brazilian artist Alemão. I had the pleasure of photographing an event at the Brazilian Embassy tonight that featured Alemão and two other incredible artists, Parma Júnior and Sebastião Mendes. Their work is wonderful and can be seen at the Embassy from 8-17 September.

22.01.2022 So, politicians really do serve the public. Here is NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro serving me coffee at The Lott cafe in Cooma. I photographed his visit to the town to talk with small-business owners.

21.01.2022 It's not everyday that I'm asked to photograph the Australian Prime Minister in his private office at Parliament House. But that's exactly what I did earlier this week, on behalf of Oxford University Press. Here is the official media photo of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull that I took during that session. There must have been ten or more people milling about around me, but despite the distractions I managed to get this picture. It was a great experience and I'm very happy with the result. I hope I'll get the opportunity to do this again someday.

21.01.2022 I've had lots of enquiries about my workshops -- www.bradleycummingsphotography.com.au/workshops if you're interested in getting to grips with that DSLR that you've been meaning to master!

19.01.2022 ... and here is another one -- at the entrance to Dusky Sound.

19.01.2022 Melbourne at dusk, just as the buildings catch the last of the daylight.

18.01.2022 The names of soldiers who died in WW1 are being projected onto the facade of the Australian War Memorial each night. I had the pleasure of photographing one of those names for a client who is descended from one of those soldiers. This was taken at about 5am a couple of weeks ago and the name of the person was only visible for about 15 seconds. While I made the picture I was watched by a dozen or more kangaroos grazing at the front of the building in the dark. Only in Canberra could that happen!

18.01.2022 Thought I'd share my latest blog with you. It's written about a photo I took on a recent trip to New York City. https://www.bradleycummingsphotography.com.au/empire-state/

17.01.2022 Mihaly Csikszentmihályi called it 'flow'. 'In the zone', 'heightened awareness','total immersion' ... even a loss of your sense of yourself. It's an experience that I have found in music, drawing, and definitely photography. It's a state that enables me to see the wonderful pictorial potential in scenes that others don't even seem to notice.

17.01.2022 Yasin Leflef busking in Melbourne -- another addition to my collection of busker photos. I enjoyed listening to him a lot.

16.01.2022 Preparing a place at table for the Prime Minister.

15.01.2022 The lanes and alleys of Melbourne never fail to offer wonderful photographs. Here the roof and light fittings in the heavily touristed but beautiful Block Arcade caught my attention.

15.01.2022 It's nice to see my pictures of Malcolm Snow, the National Capital Authority's Chief Executive, used to illustrate an article about him in the online magazine, Streetchat - http://streetfurniture.com/au/profile-malcolm-snow/ In this image he is standing in front of a tapestry in his office that depicts one of Walter Burley Griffin's designs for Canberra. I also photographed him at the newly-constructed Bowen Place, a project of which he was clearly very proud.

14.01.2022 Yesterday I volunteered my services to photograph the Mother's Day Classic event here in Canberra, which is a fund-raising event for breast cancer research. It was a huge event, a lot of fun, and of course a very worthwhile cause. Here are some of the pics from the day.

13.01.2022 A simple photo of the current and three past presidents of the Australian Academy of Science: Professor Andrew Holmes, Sir Gustav Nossal, Brian Anderson, and Professor Suzanne Cory. Four extremely distinguished people in one quick snapshot that I managed to make tonight. I'm sure many will recognise Sir Gustav.

12.01.2022 This was a little still-life challenge that I set myself. It's shot with two flashes, five pieces of black cardboard to shape the light, and just a little bit of photoshop to clean scratch reflections off the glass vase. I'm curious to know if people are interested in learning to create these sorts of photos?

12.01.2022 ... and then, during a break in the photo session, he started to play this old, cobweb-covered piano ... I moved a light into position and made the image ... a fantastic moment.

10.01.2022 One of Brad's photos in The Australian today, of John Shine the new president of the Australian Academy of Science. Good one!

08.01.2022 Edwin's medals: in memoriam.

08.01.2022 At this event I got to eat what I shot. My unorthodox approach to food photography was to stand by the kitchen door, camera and lights ready, and make the waiters pause while I photographed whatever they were serving!

07.01.2022 New Workshops for 2018! I've had lots of enquiries about my new series of workshops -- go to www.bradleycummingsphotography.com.au/workshops if you're interested in getting to grips with that DSLR that you've been meaning to master!

07.01.2022 I don't expect I'll ever get over my attraction to black and white images. Just rocks, leaves, and water here ... simple and beautiful and elegant in black and white -- at least to my eyes.

06.01.2022 This little dog is really enjoying the attention from celebrity TV vet Chris Brown on this very cold morning in Canberra this week. I had a great time photographing Chris as he interacted with pets, people, passers-by ... and of course the media.

06.01.2022 The dizzying visual noise in these graffiti-riddled lanes in the middle of Melbourne are practically a tourist attraction now. Hard to reconcile that with the people I saw entering and leaving this doorway.

05.01.2022 I'm delighted to see one of my photographs of author and speaker Andrew Hackett used on the cover of his book, published by Holland House Publishing in New York. I had the pleasure of spending a day with Andrew at his property a couple of months ago, and I was equally pleased to photograph the launch of his book a couple of days ago. Congratulations Andrew!

05.01.2022 An ambient-light portrait of Chris, taken during last week's Introduction to Digital Photography workshop.

05.01.2022 Ultracrepidarian. I learnt that word today. It's not often that I show client work here, but this morning I photographed the launch of the new edition of the Oxford Australian National Dictionary at Parliament House, at which the Hon. Dr. Andrew Leigh (in the photo here) accepted a copy on behalf of the Australian Government. He used this word in his speech -- it means those who talk about things that they don't know anything about. The irony wasn't lost on him. Or me. And I'm definitely going to find use for that word somewhere too!

04.01.2022 After midnight now, and I'm processing pictures from a corporate event that I photographed earlier this evening in a very atmospheric wood-panelled bar here in Canberra. The classical piano player engaged for the event was working hard but nobody was listening ... except me. I didn't get your name, but thanks for playing.

02.01.2022 A couple of days ago I watched this short 1958 documentary on the work of the American photographer Ansel Adams. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1sNvguh3Y8 This one was particularly worth seeing as the opening features Adams playing the piano -- he once aspired to be a concert pianist -- which made the film doubly interesting for me, aligning with my interests in music and photography. Indeed that's not the only 'performance' in the film -- watch carefully the section abou...t 9 minutes in where Adams dodges and burns a print he is making in his darkroom That, too, is a masterful performance! It ends with Adams playing Bach's Prelude No. 1 in C major over a frustratingly incomplete glimpse of his famous 1941 image "Moonrise over Hernandez". Fortunately, if you're in Canberra, you can see this picture at the National Gallery where their print is currently being exhibited. If you're interested in this stuff, watch the video, marvel at the cases of gear that Adams took with him on a photo shoot, and go and see the "Moonrise" at the NGA. See more

02.01.2022 I love street photography -- little glimpses of life, and people's stories, caught, framed, and interpreted by the camera's viewfinder ...

02.01.2022 I never really know where my photos will end up. Yesterday I photographed the 2017 Australian Falling Walls Lab event at the Academy of Science here in Canberra. It's an opportunity for young scientists to pitch their innovations to science and industry leaders, and the winners then get to go to Berlin to do it again in front of an international audience. I was delighted to see that my picture of the entire group from last year was used by the Berlin organisation in their international promo video. It's great to see my pictures used in this way!

01.01.2022 A couple of days ago I needed an industrial trolley to move the 250kg of equipment that I used to photograph some corporate portraits. Tomorrow I just need a shoulder bag for a portrait assignment. I love the variety.

01.01.2022 A visual cliché, of course. But a mesmerizing, hypnotic one.
