24.01.2022 Goulburn heads for shade Auburn Street urban tree canopy to increase Work has begun on the transformation of Auburn Street as part of the CBD enhancement, with an increase of the urban tree canopy underway. ... Concrete median strips down the centre of Goulburns iconic main street are being removed, with holes to be dug soon in order to plant Zelkova Serrata trees which are a fast growing, medium sized tree suitable for street planting under Goulburns weather conditions. Mayor Bob Kirk said he was looking forward to the improvements that will help cool the CBD in summer, and add to the enhancement of the CBD. This project has been a long-term goal of Council following the early stages of CBD enhancement work such as the paving undertaken in 2016 and 2017. Trees will be planted right down the middle of our street for three blocks of Auburn Streets as part of this stage, between Verner and Goldsmith Streets. These Zelkovas are a vase shaped tree, and will be well maintained by our staff to ensure safe visibility of pedestrians and of traffic. Concrete median removal is expected to take another week, before works commence on hole digging, tree planting and then reinstating of pedestrian islands and median strips. $800,000 has been allocated in budget for the project, which is expected to be completed by November this year. The works come on the back of a long-term effort by Goulburn Mulwaree Council to enhance the CBD through tree planting and gardening, paving and public art installations. Business owners have been notified of the works, which are being undertaken at night to minimise inconvenience.
23.01.2022 As a woman living in regional NSW, I would dearly like to see more regional and rural women getting involved in politics and making a change. For 40 years I wa...s unaligned to any political party, seeking the best in health, education and agriculture for my community. However, 11 years ago I was determined to make a change and it was my time to put myself at the table and to work from the inside. Which is why Im so pleased to announce alongside Shelley Hancock that we are partnering with Women for Election Australia to run a combination of webinars and face-to-face workshops to address the barriers women face when they run for office. 22.01.2022 Araluen Road repairs Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council today announced that the safety of drivers in Araluen and surrounds will soon be improved as work gets underway to fix flood-damaged sections of Araluen Road. Araluen Road extends from near the village of Araluen, south of Braidwood, through the Eurobodalla Shire Council region to Moruya. The road suffered significant damage during heavy rains and flooding in 2020. The upcoming works will improve the road surface and d...rainage on the damaged road. With the work commencing on Monday 15 February 2021, Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council Mayor, Cr Tim Overall said this project was one of many in the region that have become necessary due to fires and floods in 2020. I believe I am speaking on behalf of most residents of Araluen and surrounds when I say that this much anticipated works will come as great relief to users of the road, said Mayor Overall. Araluen Road primarily serves local residents. It can also provide a link between Moruya and Braidwood. However, with damage in both the Queanbeyan-Palerang and Eurobodalla sections of the road as a result of fires, floods and periods of heavy rain leading to mud and rock slides, travellers passing through the region have been strongly discouraged from using the road. The planned repair works includes gravel re-sheeting of approximately 10km of Araluen Road from south of Neringla Lane to Pigeon Gully. There will also be vegetation trimming and select drainage repairs. Residents and motorists using Araluen Road will experience an increase in truck and construction equipment movements between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, for the duration of the works. Drivers are urged to exercise caution when travelling through the work site and on roads leading to the work site that will be used by trucks involved in the project. To ensure safety of motorists and road workers, traffic controllers will manage traffic passing through the project during the day. Delays of up to 15 minutes may be expected. The project is anticipated to take approximately six weeks and is expected to be completed by the end of March 2021, weather permitting.

15.01.2022 Shared by Michael Shawn Fletcher: "Indigenous Plant Use" by Barkandji woman Zena Cumpston from the School of Ecosystem and Forest Sciences. It is for families, ...schools, community groups. Download it and get out in your garden today! Such a powerful statement about the depth of knowledge in the Kulin Nations. Indigenous plant use In 2019, the University of Melbourne was transformed by the breathtaking influx of 40,000 Kulin Nation plants as part of the Indigenous-led event, The Living Pavilion. These plants were accompanied by signs, carefully researched and curated by Barkandji woman Zena Cumpston, which articulated the plants from an Aboriginal perspective and explored their cultural, nutritional, technological and medicinal use. The plant research was so popular that many participants contacted Zena wanting to access the information. The new Indigenous plant use booklet was created so people could continue learning. In the booklet, youll find information on more than 50 indigenous plant species displayed on labels that you can print and use in your own garden. https://nespurban.edu.au//2020/08/Indigenous-plant-use.pdf

14.01.2022 BOOK LAUNCH. The launch of Keeping it Alive took place last Saturday afternoon at the Braidwood Servicemen's Club. Around 70-80 people attended to listen to special guest speaker, Mrs Nichole Overall, along with sharing some stories and officially launch the book. Keeping it Alive was written by Ros Maddrell, Elaine Collins, both former employees of the Braidwood Hospital. Paris Silvester made up the trio and provided the layout of the book. All 3 ladies spent countless hou...rs putting it together. The result is 140 pages of photographic memories, stories, old names that haven’t been mentioned for many years along with plenty of emotion. Keeping it Alive was financially supported by The Royal Australian Historical Association, Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council and Braidwood Community Bank, with proceeds from the sale of the book donated to the Braidwood Hospital Auxiliary. The cost of the book is $35.00 and is available from the Braidwood Community Bank, Braidwood Newsagents, Braidwood Post Office and the Braidwood Information Centre. This book not only will hold pride and place at home, it will also make a terrific Christmas present. The first run of books printed were 500, so get in quickly before they run out. 12.01.2022 On Saturday afternoon, 29 August, representatives from RFS brigades surrounding Braidwood were invited to join the Braidwood RFS, and a number of area Group Off...icers and the local District Officer to share and make plans for working with our communities in the lead up to the official start of the bushfire season in this area, 1 October. Most of these dedicated volunteers were central to the mammoth firefighting efforts around our south east area last summer and are tirelessly fronting up again to continue to protect and serve their communities. We hope working together on a few projects will ease the individual brigades burden and ultimately be more efficient and effective across the wider area around Braidwood. RFS brigade representatives in attendance were from: Braidwood, Mulloon, Charleyong, Nerriga, Majors Creek, Araluen, Krawarree, Farringdon, Bombay, along with Braidwood SES. (With apologies from the Mongarlowe brigade.)And Amy Kindrachuk and Cathie King once again fed the troops! Come down and see some of us at the Braidwood Markets in Ryrie Park on Saturday morning, 26 September. Well have lots of useful resources to help you make your summer fire plans, and be happy to answer all your questions and give you advice, well also have some fun stuff for the kids and a truck to check out too. #getreadyweekend
11.01.2022 Please consider filling out this survey. Even if your children are too small to use it now, you may need it in the future. Out of School Hours Care is very important for some working parents. ________________________ Out of School Hours Care survey... Braidwood Central School want to offer families more flexibility with their work commitments and child care arrangements and to create more opportunities across the whole community. Having Out of School Hours Care available at local schools is a great way to achieve this. As part of the NSW Government’s $120 million Before and After School Care (BASC) commitment, parents at all NSW schools were recently invited to complete a Have Your Say survey. The survey asked parents to tell us how they are using Out of School Hours Care, how much it costs them, whether they plan to keep using it, and what difficulties they experience in accessing it. The survey results have helped us to better understand the needs of families and what’s important to them. BCS are now asking all parents to complete a quick follow-up survey by Friday 27 November 2020. You can access the survey at https://surveys.education.nsw.gov.au/s3/OSHCParentSurvey. This information will help the Department to target the rollout of more before Out of School Hours Care services in the right areas If your child does not require Out of School Hours care, we ask that you please still complete the first section of this survey as it gives the Department of Education important information about the level of demand at our school. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at school or the BASC Program team by phone on 1300 244 145 or email at: [email protected]

09.01.2022 Watch out for online shopping scams this holiday season Losses to online shopping scams have increased 42 per cent this year, and Scamwatch is warning Australians to be careful when buying gifts this holiday season. Scamwatch has received over 12,000 reports of online shopping scams so far this year, with almost $7 million in reported losses.... More people have been shopping online this year due to COVID-19 restrictions and scammers are now targeting people doing their Christmas shopping, including in the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, ACCC Deputy Chair Delia Rickard said. Scammers create fake websites that look like genuine online stores, offering products at very low prices and victims will either receive a fake item or nothing at all. They also post fake ads on classified websites, often claiming they are travelling and someone else will deliver the goods, but the item never arrives and the victim can no longer contact the seller. Losses on classified websites, such as Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree, have increased by 60 per cent this year, to $4.5 million. Reports of online shopping scams involving consumer goods, such as shoes, phones, computers and toys, continue to be high. But the most common thing people were trying to buy when they were scammed was puppies and other pets. People aged 24 and under reported the highest number of scams involving phones and computers. Watch out for popular products being sold at prices much lower than on other websites and sellers requesting payment through direct bank transfer or cryptocurrency, Ms Rickard said. Take the time to consider who you are dealing with and don’t be pressured by special offers. Do your research by checking independent reviews of online stores or the seller’s history on classified websites. Another scam to be aware of if you have made recent purchases online is fake parcel delivery notifications via text message or email. Australia Post will never ask you to click a link to enter your personal details, nor will they ask for credit card details or a fee to deliver your packages, Ms Rickard said. If you have been the victim of a scam, contact your bank as soon as possible and contact the platform on which you were scammed to inform them of the circumstances. Most financial institutions offer a charge back service for credit cards and will dispute a credit transaction with the merchant if they still exist. More information on scams is available on the Scamwatch website, including how to make a report and where to get help.

09.01.2022 Braidwood Central School RFS Cadets got to show off their skills for Leader of Australian Labor Party, Anthony Albanese, the Shadow Minister for Disaster and Emergency Management, Murray Watt, and the Member for Eden-Monaro, Kristy McBain at Bombay Reserve this morning. Mr Albanese said "We need also to respond to all of the recommendations of the Royal Commission, including the need for national aerial firefighting. It was a very clear recommendation, and one that's bee...n rejected by the Government without any adequate explanation. Lastly, can I say to the cadets who are here today and their teachers and their mentors in the RFS, a big shout-out to you. They have been learning skills that will help their community. Many of them will go on to serve in the RFS and make a real contribution to keeping their communities safe. And it was terrific today to engage with the students who are enthusiastic. The fact that the program was more than full, not everyone who wanted to participate could. There's a lesson there, we need to roll-out these sorts of programs around the country, because they don't exist everywhere. But we've seen today the success of it by talking with the RFS as well as the cadets themselves." See more

05.01.2022 If you’re off to the south coast on Saturday morning, please note Additional bridge lift for Batemans Bay Bridge The remaining barge used for marine construction of the Batemans Bay Bridge replacement will leave the Clyde River on Saturday 14 November.... The community is advised of an additional opening of the Batemans Bay Bridge on Saturday morning, to allow the barge to pass through. The barge, named AMS 1807, housed a crane, workers and other materials used to build the new bridge piers. A lift opening is scheduled for Saturday 14 November between 8am and 9am, weather permitting, and will take up to 20 minutes. This activity is required to take place during this timeframe to take advantage of favourable tidal conditions to safely transport the barge. The bridge lift will allow the barge to pass under the existing bridge before it is transported north to Sydney. All vessel operators in the area should exercise extreme caution, keep a proper lookout and comply with local buoyage and signage. The lift will take up to 20 minutes, and motorists will experience delays along the Princes Highway, the Kings Highway and other local roads. Motorists are advised to plan their journeys and allow additional travel time. Motorists and pedestrians are reminded to follow the bridge signals when crossing the bridge. If conditions are not suitable for the lift, the community will be notified of a new date and time. Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their patience during this time. 01.01.2022 Destroyers, NSW psychiatrist Dr Karen Williams is calling on the state government to urgently establish a protocol to deal with head trauma in women subjected t...o domestic and family violence. After all, as she says, When a sports player suffers a head injury there is a precise protocol to follow. Its the same for road accident victims. But NSW Labor MP Anna Watson says, I recently asked an emergency doctor about it and they said, We dont have specific protocol for those women, true, but we have to have one for sports people because they are very likely to go back out on to the field and are likely to be in a high-risk situation again.
