25.01.2022 Preschool has started for Term 3 The children are enjoying seeing their friends and teachers after the holidays, and there is lots of play happening, outside in the beautiful weather!

25.01.2022 Happy Christmas and safe holidays..

25.01.2022 Lomandra After cutting the spiky seed stalks from the lomandra, Kathy remembered that Uncle Noel had taught us that the lomandra leaves could be used for weaving and that the very bottom, soft white part of the leaf stalk can be eaten. We didn’t try eating any, but we did do some weaving. The children and Kathy cut some leaves and started weaving them, over and under. A few children helped and soon we had a square. We talked about Aboriginal, Torres Strait and Pacific Islander people weaving hats and baskets and mats. We will watch our weaving dry and see what happens. We enjoyed using knowledge, on yuin country, from Uncle Noel, Nura Gunyu,

25.01.2022 Our new Yarning Circle Sitting Area In the holidays, we had landscaping work done, to add a yarning circle in our playground. Thank you to Hayden Pengelly’s Paving & Landscapes. for his great work and to Dargues Goldmine for our Community Grant. A yarning circle is an important part of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, for sitting together to talk and listen and share ideas and stories. The next part of the project will be to add seating and to plant native and ...bush tucker plants. Uncle Noel and Aunty Trish Nura Gunyu are advising us on suitable plants. We also added our Rainbow Serpent artwork which the children made with Uncle Noel. We are proud to be on Yuin country. Preschool also has some copies of Uncle Noel and Aunty Trish’s CD, Look Learn Sing Dance for available for purchase at $25. Let us know if you would like to buy a copy. See more

25.01.2022 The Australian Government website Learning Potential has lots and lots of information and suggestions for supporting your child's learning through games, discussion and observation. https://www.learningpotential.gov.au/search?age=24

24.01.2022 Keep an eye out for Djanagubadj!! If you see any, you can add your sighting to Echidna CSI. You will be contributing to the information about echidnas, and assisting in their conservation. We will add our echidna sighting at Preschool. :)

24.01.2022 Dhurga language program. walaawarni njindiwan This year, we will continue the dhurga language program. We are guided by Uncle Noel and Aunty Trish Nura Gunyu and by Aunty Kerry, one of the authors of the Dhurga dictionary and learners grammar guide. This week, the children and educators are learning the dhurga words for the parts of our body. We will keep practicing, by singing gabaanu gugu.. heads shoulders knees and toes, and by using the dhurga words in games and stories.

23.01.2022 Welcome to Braidwood Preschool 2021! We come together, to play and learn on yuin country. The beautiful rain didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the children, parents and educators for a new year of fun, friendships and curiosity.

23.01.2022 Some photos which show the renewal of Uncle Noel and Aunty Trish's property, after it was destroyed by bushfires.. Also sending support to all the Preschool families and staff who are still recovering from the impacts of the bushfires.

22.01.2022 Online books and resources Scholastic Australia have some good links on their Facebook page to authors and illustrators and their work, such as Matt Cosgrove and his Macca the Alpaca books, and a video of the Wonkey Donkey Man . There is also books and linked resources in Scholastic Learn at Home https://classroommagazines.scholastic.com//grades-prek-k.h In the 'holidays' we hope you can also get out for a exercise walk and maybe do an I spy, or treasure hunt along the way

22.01.2022 In these stressful, and frustrating times, this is a good explanation of frustration, and has suggestions for helping children (and adults) to deal with this emotion. Thanks Dr. Deborah MacNamara for the info, and Maggie Dent for sharing this.

21.01.2022 It was a beautiful day for Uncle Noel and Aunty Trish Nura Gunyu to visit us. We were able to sit in our Yarning circle, constructed by Pengelly’s Paving & Landscapes. while Uncle Noel read us the book Where is Stripey? We had talked about maria (emu) during our Zoom visit. Uncle Noel told us about the father maria sitting on the eggs. Then Aunty Trish sang her new song Buru and boori (kangaroo and joey) and the children moved like kangaroos, bouncing and moving their ears to listen. Uncle Noel also bought us an djanagubadj and googanyalla (echidna and kookaburra) wooden cut outs for us to paint and add to our display.

18.01.2022 From garden to plate Our spinach has been growing well in the veggie garden, so today we thought we would cook some spinach triangles. The children helped to collect the spinach from the garden, then to cut it up. We then cut up feta cheese & mixed in some eggs. The next important job was to brush on the melted butter, as Kathy rolled up the filo pastry to make triangles. Most of the children enjoyed eating their spinach triangle at afternoon tea. Some comments ‘I liked it’, ‘I thought it would be yucky, but it was yummy’ and ‘Mum, I ate spinach!’ With this beautiful rain, we will look forward to watching more of our veggies grow, and deciding how to eat them.

17.01.2022 Here is a great idea and a great competition.. Get the children to explore the backyard & take some photos to enter. Competition closes on May 1

17.01.2022 Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Education Jodie Harrison visited us on Wednesday to talk to parents and teachers. Jodie has a good knowledge of Early Childhood services, so she understands the challenges we are facing. It was a pleasure to be have Jodie Harrison MP visit us.

16.01.2022 If you would like to test your child's hearing the Sound Scouts app sounds like it would be very useful.

15.01.2022 Connection to nature and to our space Today, Fiona helped the children to plants seeds in the pots at the entrance to Preschool. The children will be able to watch the plants grow and bloom as they arrive and depart preschool. They will also be able to share the beauty of the plants with their family. The children are also excitedly telling us about the progress of the sunflower seeds they took home. They are obviously doing a good job of caring for their seeds as they have s...hared photos, and we have heard ‘My sunflower has 6 leaves’. No one will protect what they don’t care about, and no one will care about what they haven’t experienced David Attenborough

15.01.2022 We are proud that our Reconciliation Action Plan has been approved and published by Reconciliation Australia! The Reconciliation Action Plan, created from the Narragunnawali: Reconciliation in Education platform, is recognition of our journey so far, and of our plans for the future. We are extremely grateful for the guidance and teachings of Uncle Noel and Aunty Trish Nura Gunyu. And also to teachings and influences of Dwayne Ngaran Ngaran Culture Awareness, ECA Reconciliat...ion Champions, The Aboriginal Early Childhood Collective and Aunty Kerry (teacher and co-author of Dhurga Dictionary). We are proud that the Educators, children and families of Braidwood Preschool are on a journey to have knowledge of, and respect for, this country's Aboriginal people and culture. 13.01.2022 Decorating eggs at home.. At Preschool, we usually used this crepe paper, hot water and vinegar dye method, on boiled eggs. Draw on the eggs first with oil crayons, or candle wax, and then dip in the crepe paper dye, as per these instructions from Riverside Plaza QBN The eggs can be eaten afterwards.. :) https://www.riversideplaza.com.au//fun-easter-batik-for-th

13.01.2022 Block building The drizzly day meant that the children had a longer time inside yesterday. So the builders and engineers got to work and created some amazing structures and playscapes with the blocks and animals. There were cattle ready for the sale, matched and sorted in their yards, a shed for baby cows, a train shed and tall towers with lots of blocks balanced carefully. The children cooperated, negotiated, discussed and were careful of each other’s buildings. Then at pack away time, there were lots of strong helpers to carry the blocks and stack them on the shelf!!

13.01.2022 This would be an informative and helpful workshop. And after you register, you will be able to access a recording, even if you can't watch live.

12.01.2022 A video featuring Uncle Noel and Aunty Trish's recovery from the bushfire and the regeneration of Nura Gunyu. Always was, always will be aboriginal land.

12.01.2022 The behaviour iceberg - which can help us to understand that the child's behaviour is often masking their needs.

12.01.2022 If your children are looking for a new way to listen to some well known books, have a look at BigW Rap Books :) The children (and parents) might be inspired to make up their own rap reading of books.. we'd love to hear it! And, 'for every listen on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube, royalties will be donated to the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation, an organisation that shares BIG W’s commitment to raising literacy levels in Australia.' https://www.bigw.com.au/rapbooks

11.01.2022 National Sorry Day Wada. As a community, let us nuture and value all children, so that they can reach their potential, and have a successful future.

10.01.2022 Thank you to our fabulous Educators at Braidwood Preschool and to Educators everywhere. #earlychildhoodeducatorsday

09.01.2022 Happy Father’s Day, to all the Fathers, Grandpas, father figures, and good men. Have a special day and thank you for all you do to nurture and care for children. You Rock!! And to those for whom Fathers Day also brings sadness, we send our virtual hugs!

08.01.2022 Assessment and Rating This week we had Erin from NSW Dept of Ed, at Braidwood Preschool observing and rating us against the National Standards. We will receive our Rating Report in a few weeks time. We hope we were able to clearly communicate our strengths - our fabulous team of educators, our beautiful playground, our Dhurga and French language programs, that our children are competent and confident learners, our committed management committee and our high standing and strong connection to the Braidwood community. We will look forward to getting our Rating.

07.01.2022 Connecting to Mother Earth by hunting for the creatures which live on yuin country. Today, after finding a slater, Sarah helped the children to go on a creature hunt. First they found some more slaters in the bark chips. Then as they kept searching, they found ‘spitfire’ caterpillars on the ground. They were quite big, so Sarah made sure the children didn’t touch them, just in case they would spit! They wondered what the actual name of the caterpillars would be? Then with more searching, they found two cicada shells. Sarah talked to the children about how the cicadas shed their shells. Uncle Noel Nura Gunyu has talked to us about how we can learn about the weather and the seasons by observing the animals.

07.01.2022 A special visitor A few weeks ago, we were delighted to see a spiky visitor to Preschool! We had an echidna walk through the playground. We were able to quietly watch it, from a safe distance. Then to our amazement the echidna got through the rungs of the fence, and went wobbling along on his way. Uncle Noel told us that the Dhurga word for echidna is djanagubadj (jarnagabudch)!! What a great word. Uncle Noel also told us that the male echidnas walking about is one of the signs of a change of seasons. It was very special to see the Djanagubadj and to learn about it from Uncle Noel Nura Gunyu. Wada.

07.01.2022 Uncle Noel and Aunty Trish came to Preschool by Zoom today!! The children enjoyed talking with Noel and Trish and telling them that it is cold and raining in Braidwood. Uncle Noel told us a story about the Gugunyals and the Gari (the kookaburras and the snake). Then we sang the Maringali song with Aunty Trish. Thanks Noel and Trish Nura Gunyu

06.01.2022 Have you heard the news? We have a new website! Still the same address, but a brand new look. We hope you like it! 05.01.2022 Thank you to the local businesses who have already pledged and provided donations towards our upcoming Trivia Night.. Prizes, raffles and auctions make up a significant part of the fun and fundraising during our annual event. If you are able to contribute some goods or a voucher for our Trivia Night please bring it in to Preschool. Alternatively, please contact our office and we can organise collection.

05.01.2022 Another fantastic edition of the Braidwood Bugle.. and the Thursday group are on the front page. (There is also a practical article on headlice life cycle and treatment) Subscribe to have the Braidwood Bugle sent to your email, at www.braidwoodbugle.com.au

05.01.2022 The beautiful Spring weather has motivated the Educators and children’s interest in the veggie garden. The children checked the carrots which were growing in the garden over winter, but they still haven’t grown much! The Educators bought seedlings and the children helped to plant them, and are helping to water them. Growing vegetables gives the children a connection to Mother Earth, as they observe the changing weather and the changing plants. Hopefully, later, we can use the vegetables in cooking. The spinach looks like it might be ready to pick, so maybe some spinach triangles soon.

05.01.2022 NSW Government support package for Preschools This morning the NSW Government announced a $51 million package for support during the CoVid 19 crisis. While there are headlines about Free Preschool - there has been very little detail of how this will actually work. As we know, headlines from on the spot announcements, can be deceiving. Preschool will send out information to parents next term. It is encouraging that the Premier and the Government, recognise the importance of Early childhood education, and recognise that services and parents need support at this difficult time. Stay safe.. - handwashing

04.01.2022 An amazing act of kindness from one of our Preschoolers.. If you can please support the amazing Delilah!!!! From Delilah's Mum, Natalie: "Some of you may know our girl Delilah, she’s a beautiful girl with a big heart. Recently we had a big conversation about kids with illnesses, after she saw a picture of a young girl with no hair. We talked about how some kids can’t grow hair, sometimes kids get sick and loose their hair and lots of other reasons. We talked about how lucky ...she was to be healthy but also to be able to grow hair as beautiful as hers. After a lot of questions that I tried to answer as best I could, Delilah said to me that she wanted that little girl (from the picture) to have some of her hair. So that’s what we are going to do! Delilahs big chop! For the month of November we want to raise as much money as we can for Variety- Hair with Heart. And on the 29th of November we will be doing the big chop along with a Lunch BBQ and celebration at the beautiful Misty Mountains Teahouse. " See more

04.01.2022 This app plays Sleep time music, including.. Quiet time with Queen or Elton John or others..

04.01.2022 Wada. Look Learn Listen Dance CD is here! We are delighted to announce that Uncle Noel and Aunty Trish’s CD is here. Trish called in today to bring us our copy. Uncle Noel tells us about the animal on one track and then there is a song about the animal on the next track. Today we listened to Maringali and Goombawa. The CD will be for sale soon, so that you can learn Dhurga words and stories at home. Thanks Noel and Trish Nura Gunyu. Thanks Keith Potger. Funding from NSW Early Childhood Education

04.01.2022 Assessement and Rating 2020 Final Report Braidwood Preschool recently were recently assessed and rated against the National Quality Standard, which has 7 Quality Areas. These standards sets a benchmark for the quality of all education and care services. Braidwood Preschool received an overall rating of ‘Meeting National Quality Standard’ with a rating of ‘Exceeding National Quality Standard’ in three out of the seven quality areas. The areas where preschool were recognised ...as Exceeding were Quality Area 3 Physical environment Quality Area 4 - Staffing Arrangements Quality Area 6 - Collaborative partnerships with families and communities. We were also rated as Exceeding in 2 out of the 3 elements within the Quality Area 1 Educational Program and Planning. We are proud that the Assessor recognised the work we have being doing this year on the planning cycle and the systems we use for programming and planning. We are also very proud that the Assessor commented that 'in particular, an educational program that cultivates a deep respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, demonstrates the commitment to quality' by the Committee, Educators and Families. Thank you to Uncle Noel and Aunty Trish Nura Gunyu, and to Aunty Kerry, author of the Dhurga Dictionary, for inspiring and guiding us. Thank you to the Braidwood Community and the members of the Preschool family, for supporting us. Together with the children, the Educators and the Committee , we all make Braidwood Preschool a fantastic early childhood service!

04.01.2022 If staying home is frustrating, pretend to be a blue whale!? Thanks Take 3 :)

03.01.2022 Today on yuin county, we had a bilima come to visit. Kathy had found a long necked tortoise at her house, so she bought it in to visit Preschool. Fortunately, we also found some snails at Preschool, so the children could watch the snails moving, while they waited for the tortoise to come out of its shell. And the snails even slid onto the tortoise’s shell!! When the tortoise came out of its shell, there was lots of observation and discussion. I can see it’s eyes. It blinke...d. Why does it have a long neck? I can see it’s claws. Boy tortoises have claws. Snails have 4 eyes. Snails are slimy. The children also drew pictures of the snail and the bilima, recording their observations. Kathy will return the bilima to near a creek, this afternoon, but it was special to see the bilima up close. 03.01.2022 This sounds like a great webinar - Dr Louise Porter and Sandi Phoenix are knowledgeable and entertaining!

02.01.2022 Our Yarning circle We now have seats in our Yarning Circle, thanks to one of our parents!! In this beautiful winter sunshine, the children and educators are able to use this space, as part of our outdoor classroom/playground.

02.01.2022 Engineering and building skills Our engineers and builders were very busy last week. The blocks at Preschool provide the opportunity for building and play. The design and construction provided the opportunity for discussions about weight, counterbalance, gravity, solid foundations, stability and redesigning. And of course, starting again after the collapse! The blocks also provide the opportunity for play & cooperating with friends. The children made paddocks then sorted the animals into the paddocks, with the meat eaters together in one paddock. Play allows children to test out ideas, challenge each other’s thinking and build new understandings.

02.01.2022 A beautiful video, which includes Uncle Noel Nura Gunyu. May we all learn and be inspired.

02.01.2022 As we start the second week of holidays, and another week of 'stay at home', here is a great list of ideas and resources from the Maggie Dent team

02.01.2022 Next Tuesday 7th, the children can join in, from home, with their DIY instruments

02.01.2022 Such a crazy year..! Hope you can still find things to smile about? Take care of yourself and your loved ones. And find love and joy in the small things, amidst the uncertainity.

01.01.2022 Wada. We, the Braidwood Preschool community, acknowledge that we gather to play and learn, on the land which was cared for by the people of the Dhurga language speaking group, for thousands of years. We thank them for their care of Yuin land, water and animals. We respect their knowledge and culture, and we respect Elders past, present and emerging. #NRW2020 #inthistogether2020

01.01.2022 2020 Preschool Night Thank you to all the teams, to Hamish Hudson, to the wonderful Braidwood businesses, and to Braidwood Servicemens Club for making the 2020 Trivia Night such a success. Due to Covid restrictions, the numbers were limited, but all who came had a great evening. Over $4500 was raised for the Preschool - an amazing total, given the difficult year which everyone has had, especially Braidwood businesses! Congrats to the winning team, Brawn not Brains!. They backed up their win from last year!! They will be keen for a three-peat next year... Well done and thank you everyone.
