18.01.2022 For 87-year-old former banana farmer, Noel Bultitude, the NSW RFS is his second family and after 72 years he is still on call, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.... My father started the fire brigade at Woolgoolga and the first meeting was held at the banana packing shed, he reflects. When I started in the brigade at 15 we would attend fires with a horse and slide, now we have all the modern equipment." Noel has been all over the state and only a few years ago was fighting fires in the Blue Mountains. His wife Betty has also lent a hand, catering for hungry teams with curry chicken being one of her signature dishes. These days he heads to the fire shed most days to tidy up or do a bit of maintenance. It keeps me busy and it’s good to meet up with people and have a bit of a chat. There’s always new friends to make, he says. It’s good to do a service for the community, but when I am not down the shed or on a call, I like fishing and golfing, he said. The NSW Rural Fire Service congratulates Noel on his incredible 72 years of service and dedication to the community. Join the NSW RFS today. Visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/join
18.01.2022 With these damp conditions, the fire season is scheduled to finish on March 31. This means after that date, you will not need to get a permit for burning off ...vegetation. BUT, you will still have to notify your local fire control centre or do an online notification. Also it is a requirement to notify all your adjoining neighbours at least 24 hours prior to lighting up. It’s a good idea to check the RFS website and look up Standards for pile burns and Before you light that fire. These guides help you to prepare and advise you how to safely burn off vegetation, what is and what is not allowed to be burnt as there are restrictions. Stay tuned for more information closer to the end of the fire season. See more

05.01.2022 Bushfire Danger Period to commence October 1st, 2021 for Queanbeyan-Palerang Local Government Area The Bushfire Danger Period will commence for residents withi...n the Queanbeyan-Palerang Local Government Area from October 1st. 2021. Despite above average rainfall in recent months, the increased grass growth is a particular area of concern for this summer said Lake George District Manager, Superintendent Paul Jones. As the weather heats up and the new growth dries out, it does increase the threat of some fast running fires, now is the time to start taking proactive steps to prepare your property said Superintendent Jones. Anyone wishing to light a fire during the Bushfire Danger Period will be required to obtain a free fire permit in addition to notifying their local fire authority and neighbours 24 hours before lighting up. Superintendent Jones added that as firefighters across the district and state were busy preparing for the upcoming season, residents should be doing the same. Now is really the best time to start preparing said Superintendent Jones. Start asking those important questions, is my property prepared, what is my bushfire survival plan, if there is a fire when will I leave, where will I go and what do need to take? Residents are also reminded to report all unattended fires to Triple Zero (000) immediately and to stay up to date with fires in the area by downloading the Fires Near Me App, going to www.rfs.nsw.gov.au or calling the Bushfire Information Line on 1800 679 737 For details on making a bush fire survival plan visit www.myfireplan.com.au For information about the Bush Fire Danger Period, go to www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/BFDP To notify of your intent to burn, use the online burn notification tool at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council
