23.01.2022 If our eyes don't work well together, we can see things differently to others. The trick is knowing that what we see isn't what others are seeing, especially w...hen it comes to text on a page. . So many of my clients describe the text as "swimming" or blurring or moving on the page. It's often a surprise to their parents to hear that response. . Fixing this sort of visual issue may not just be a matter of needing glasses. There may be oculomotor difficulties underpinning this problem. It's about how our eyes work together. Our visual system needs stable body systems to work well and support it-- that's why it's important to also assess posture, balance and other body-based movement and support systems. If the body doesn't support learning, it can interfere with learning. Body to brain learning approaches look for body clues to tell us more about how our students/clients are learning. #body_to_brain_learning #integratingthinking #vision #learning #reading #teaching #know_your_students_and_how_they_learn.

20.01.2022 Such great info on scoliosis & retained reflexes from @posturepro . Proper growth of the spine is crucial for the health of every child. Postural misalignments ...such as scoliosis can significantly hinder someone’s quality of life. The angle of trunk rotation serves as a reliable measurement to assess spinal development and detect early manifestations of the spinal deviation. Persistent primitive reflexes after the first year are potential factors contributing to the formation of scoliosis. A study published in Advances of Clinical and Experimental Medicine investigated the matter. The researchers measured the angle of trunk rotation and degree of reflex integration in 61 children. They assessed three primitive reflexes: The asymmetrical tonic neck reflex (ATNR), The symmetrical tonic neck reflex (STNR), The spinal Galant reflex (SGR) The results showed a body rotation in half of the children and a positive correlation with a non-integrated spinal Galant reflex, mostly in girls. Gieysztor, E., Sadowska, L., Choiska, A., & Paprocka-Borowicz, M. (2018). Trunk rotation due to persistence of primitive reflexes in early school-age children. 19.01.2022 TUMMY TIME. Makes sense in theory, but what about those babies who just seem to hate it? And where did the term "tummy time" even come from? Before 1994, tummy ...time didn't exist. There was a rise in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in the early 90s, and as a result, the "Back to Sleep" campaign was initiated by the American Academy of Paediatrics, which strongly discouraged parents from putting their babies on their tummies to sleep. As a result, SIDS declined. However therapists and doctors noticed that parents were then scared to put their babies on their tummies during waking hours, and they were missing out on spending time in this position, from which they learn to push up on their hands, roll and crawl. It is also from this position that they strengthen their back and neck. So the term "tummy time" was coined, with "back to sleep, front to play" being encouraged. However, health professionals weren't great at letting parents know that "tummy time" didn't have to be on the floor. It became something that parents thought of as a prescribed exercise that needed to be scheduled into their baby's day, and if they didn't, they would be failing their baby. I think this continues today. Whilst tummy time is important, it does not need to be so regimented, and it doesn't have to be on the floor! Of course some babies are going to hate being placed with their face flat on the floor! It seems to be easier (and just as beneficial) for babies and parents if tummy time is more about play and interaction. There are many ways you can achieve this: Hold your baby on your chest. Carry your baby belly down or hold them in an upright position. Embrace baby wearing. Support your baby in a standing position. Play aeroplane". Lie your baby on their tummy over a fit ball. Put toys or a mirror in front of them if they are on the floor, to make it more appealing than just lying there! Lie on the floor with them. If they cry, pick them up! No need to push it, otherwise they may develop a negative association with it. See more

15.01.2022 Look at the differences between a typical preschool child’s hand (left) and a typical 7 year old hand (right). Want to know why a preschool aged child isn’t a...ble to write yet? This is why! Their hands are still developing and are not fully formed. So what should they be doing to support this? PLAY!! Playdough, colouring, cutting, gluing, playing outside, digging in dirt, sensory play, dress up play, science experiments, beading, puzzles, throwing balls, etc. . All of these things help their hands develop. When they are physically ready to write, they will! No need to rush them, they will show you when they are ready. via @Raisingherbarefoot

14.01.2022 Sometimes "helping" our children by "doing it for them" when we see they are challenged by a task isn't actually helping them learn. I'm not advocating abandonm...ent and a complete "tough love" approach when they are struggling. I am saying sometimes we need to pause and ask ourselves if it's our brain or the child's brain that is doing the learning. Sometimes "helping" is rescuing too early, and not really educating. . #body_to_brain_learning #integratingthinking #bodystories #helpingthebodysupportlearning #bodymattersinlearning #learningstories #teachers #parents #learning See more

07.01.2022 Are your students or kids participating in remote learning in the fall? These wonderful pictures from AL-inclusive Therapy Services demonstrate proper setup to... help support your students’ posture. Having a good base of support also supports fine motor skills! Think about trying to write nearly while sitting on a chair that wobbles or while sitting in a large chair with only your tiptoes touching the ground. This is difficult to do and is similar to how it feels for children working on fine motor skills when their posture is not supported! Children should switch positions frequently throughout the day. They shouldn’t stay in one position. If your child feels uncomfortable, fatigued, or upset in any position, do not do have your child sit this way ! Some of the seating positions are meant to just provide a different way to sit to help with posture, strength, proprioceptive input & a little stretch! Talk to your doctor, OT or PT if you have questions about your child and how they are sitting!
