24.01.2022 Not only is this a beautiful prosthetic leg but a beautiful & touching tribute behind the design & how it’s owner became a Brave Heart Dragon Boat member. Thank you Shane for sharing & inspiring us with your journey

24.01.2022 This weeks "JOY" of Brave Hearts story has been shared by Mel McIntrye. We are so privileged to have so many amazing members who shared in this wonderful moment... please post and share your memories from this very special evening in the comments. Thanks for sharing Mel. I'm trying to come up with one moment of my Brave Hearts journey that brings me joy, I can but there are so many. One of my proudest & most joyful experiences was the Inaugural Gala Dinner and Award Presentation held in August 2013. I have so many feelings associated with being awarded a silver heart along with the other 11 recipients, humility, pride and gratitude come to mind. Every time I wear my silver heart I feel so much pride, and gratitude for a wonderful organisation that has given me so much joy after my Breast Cancer diagnosis in 2006. Love, courage and support is what it’s all about. Our silver heart group has grown yearly from that first night and I’m so proud to be part of it. Every time I’ve raced or represented as a Brave Heart has been an amazing experience for me, so, lots of joyful times to look back on. The list of joy goes on and on. We are going through tough times at present, and I look forward to returning to dragon boating with my club. But, whatever eventuates, the joy and pride of being a member of Brave Hearts will always be with me. Thanks, Mumma Mel

19.01.2022 Today's "JOY" of Brave Hearts story is from our BHDBC Captain Linda Knight. Thanks for sharing your wonderful stand out moments Linda I know there are many of us who will always remember that amazing 2km race at Kawana Waters in the torrential rain and 30-40km head winds!! Drop a comment or photo if you were there... Where do I start? 3 1/2 years ago I thought I'd have a crack at hoping in a boat for fun and fitness. I got that in spades but I did not expect was the friend...ships and the determination and that will to win, I didn't even realise I possessed that skill. I love and miss terribly the road trips ATM to load up and head off to new places with friends but also with new paddlers, by the end of a weekend away you come away with more experiences and yet again strong links with fellow new found mates. I was asked what brought me Joy, gee how can I pinpoint that to one or even a few experiences? One of the most powerful experiences was Kawana Waters a 2k race in the driving rain and wind, I was terrified and thought we were stark raving mad. I looked across at my bench buddy, Brenda we grabbed each others hand as we waited at the start line and I thought we will only get through this if we stick together and that we did it was the most exhilarating experience, I have no idea what we even placed but the togetherness we all felt it did not matter! Oh to be recognised last year and awarded as being a team player was such a honour and thats all I hope to be, I look for guidance and support and all I want to do is give that back. I love dragon boating but love the people in it more, the experiences sitting on Footscray River the horse racing in the background the city views behind just pure adrenaline, then docklands I am chaffing at the bit to get back there - Bring it on! We laugh we cry but we have so much fun. Hope all can sit back and enjoy the fun, silly times we have had, in our year that has brought us sadness and distance lets hope we can be together as a team again soon x Linda Knight

13.01.2022 Have you visited Brave Hearts Celebration Garden? Unveiled ten years ago in Belvoir Park Wodonga, the Garden provides a peaceful place for community members to celebrate those touched by a cancer diagnosis. The sculpture at the centre of the garden was created by artist Henry Dinning from the roots of a tree, then cast in bronze. We are eternally grateful to the volunteers who helped create and build the garden, along with major sponsors Hume Bank, Mars Petcare, Murray Valley Hospital and Mike Beazley. Our thanks too, to Wodonga Council for their ongoing care and maintenance of the garden space. Pop in to Belvoir Park while the roses are blooming and just take some time to stop, enjoy and remember.

09.01.2022 GLORIOUS SUNSHINE - I caught up with my Brave Heart buddy Juney today for a walk at lunchtime. June Joynson does a lot of walking & when I mentioned that I’d like to get out for more walks at lunch rather than working at the desk she kindly offered to be my walking buddy a couple of days a week. We had a great walk & talk & saw some birds. June enjoys the local bird life & likes to keep an eye on them. Find a walking buddy & make the most of the sunshine. Thanks Juney #findawalkingbuddy #staysafe #sumsiongardens Bird pics in the comments

04.01.2022 Our very first "JOY of Brave Hearts" story is from Ian & Marg Harrison. Thank you for sharing a moment that bought you "JOY"...We would love to hear from members who were lucky enough to share this moment, leave a comment or post a pic if you remember Kawana Waters, Caloundra 2007. The highlight of our ‘Dragon-Boating’ occurred in September 2007 three perfect days filled with excitement, togetherness and emotion ... 2500 competitors, 100 teams from seven countries and col...our abounding ... this was the International Dragons Abreast Dragon Boat Regatta held at a magnificent venue, Kawana Waters, Caloundra, Queensland, the last weekend in September. The practice sessions on the lake, the street parade (main street of Caloundra was closed for this event), the opening ceremony, competitive racing over two days and the closing ceremony, a wonderful experience so well organised ... not to mention the wining and dining in-between !! A wonderful example of the success in the journey recovering from breast cancer diagnosis that is the experience of so many women, young and older, in our communities worldwide today. Albury-Wodonga Brave Hearts teams and supporters numbered 63 ... the survivors (our 'girls') competed in five races up to and including the semi-finals ... our supporters team (including us!) competed in two races and won both !! Someone said we were now world champions!! Our coach and his wife, Mike and Suzy, towed the Brave Hearts ‘Beautiful Boat ‘(which the 'girls' built themselves ) the 1500 kms to Caloundra ... in 15 hours (and home again) ... so that it could be on show ... creating tremendous interest from all. An event of which we were privileged to be part ... something we will never forget. See more

01.01.2022 The sun was shining for our first leisure cruise this season. Wonderful to see everyone’s eyes smiling & the joy of being back on the water was evident. Our Sunday Liesure cruise sessions are designed specially for cancer survivors & paddlers to encourage light exercise in a fun, relaxed & supportive environment. Contact us if you would like to know more. Thank you to the DBC committee for the work behind the scenes to ensure we are COVID safe & ready to paddle.

01.01.2022 Fantastic investment for this region which will enable breast reconstruction following mastectomy, as well as head & neck cancer surgery locally. One of the many reasons why we support the Sunshine Walk to raise much needed funds that stay right here on the border. #supportingourregion #sunshinewalk
