19.01.2022 Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that can potentially invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body such as the lung, liver , bone and brain in severe cases. The earlier that it is detected and removed, the more likely that treatment is successful. Melanoma can develop from a common mole, dysplastic naevus or most often just develop as a new lesion! It can also develop in the eye a screening examination with an optometrist is advised for the at risk.... In Queensland approximately 3500 melanomas are diagnosed each year. Over your life-time to the age of 85 years, there is a 1/13 risk for men and 1/22 for women. Men more often develop these on the head, neck or back; women more likely on the back or lower legs although any part of the skin may be affected.
