25.01.2022 A rant from 2009 when I was designing my fieldwork... not sure I has gotten any better...

24.01.2022 FROM LOCAL COMMUNITY TO TRANSNATIONAL CORPORATIONS The excerpt below is part of the Capoeira material we'll be studying and discussing with mestres and students in our live interactions. I find it appropriate that most Mestres who heavily criticised non-Brazilian capoeiras for the use of youtube and internet to learn, now have to rely on it to keep their income streams. Lets talk about the lessons these times can teach us?! Because Capoeira is about building mental, physical...Continue reading

17.01.2022 A good chance to be with some nice folks! Thanks Mestre Maxuel for putting this together!

17.01.2022 As part of my revised #holisticcontext I’m back revising principles, movements and sequences I used to train with my close students. This sequences because of the energy and memory they bring are an energiser for me. I’m also being much more careful with whom I share what is sacred to me. Figure 8 sequences are an amazing resource to develop flow and creative alternatives in games. In addition to that, when we start with the simple ones, they can help develop strength and sta...mina as well. In the last few year I have also been making connections between human movements and the patterns in nature. Indeed we’re all interconnected and in many ways the patterns we use to move are all present somewhere else... #Momentheals ! #capoeira #bouncebackcapoeira #voltaporcimacapoeira #patternsinnature @chefandrecastro @obelixjens @aronh @erika_halonen @daniel_mikaelsson @pedrogoldgrub @riqueaalves @ferpacapoeira @adeliasegal @alexandre_vale

16.01.2022 An exemple of a centralised teaching/managing approach. This paradigma has been shifting for the past couple of decades, and as usual the protagonists are the 'ronins', the misunderstood ones, those at the margins... This shift caused by the use of the internet will get even stronger with the #COVID-19 pandemic. Distributed approaches to teaching/managing groups will rise and get stronger. The irony is that these approaches are much closer to the loose and organic way capoei...ra was organised and experienced in its zeitgeist era in black and poorer neighbourhoods of late 19th and early 20th century in Bahia. Much in the same way supply chains will be forced into bioregional areas, Capoeira will become more 'regional' in the same original sense used by mestre Bimba ("my capoeira is regional because it doesn't come from Angola"). Are you, capoeira, prepared to nurture your practice locally? Are you prepared to give meaning and a foundation for your Capoeira without the need for a 'worldwide circuit' of events?? In a very near future a capoeira life/career based on international flights won't be possible anymore. Where are you anchoring the meaning of your practice??!

15.01.2022 Capoeira Angola is a rhythmical and energetic martial art form. This 6 weeks workshop will be a safe place to learn Capoeira Angola movements and traditions regardless of your flexibility, motor coordination or phisycal ability. Capoeira teacher and Lennox Head resident Paula will be teaching this workshop starting on the 17/10. Book your spot by sms to 0435802560!

13.01.2022 Some of my students have asked me to hold regular training sessions online. The tentative schedule* is: - 1 training session (focussing on everyones needs and wants) Saturdays at 5pm; and - 1 study group session (using my PhD as a starting point for discussions and collaborations) to be scheduled in a group decision during our first class.... Classes, content and other details will be dealt with through WhatsApp. We'll be operating through gift economy with a suggestion of $15 per class, but I won't exclude those who cannot pay. Those in Australia can transfer straight into my bank account. Those overseas can contribute via PayPal. I'm looking forward to spending some time, training and discussing how we can use Capoeira to build resilience in these times of change with you all! #quarentrain #capoeira #bouncebackcapoeira #capoeiravoltaporcima

13.01.2022 I'm slowly coming back to more serious training. While I haven't being able to work on more demanding movements, sequences and full speed, I have been enjoying revisiting the basic foundations. Figure 8 sequences are one of my foundations and an amazing way to train flow, strength, mobility and stamina while working on movements that require constant inversions, balance and transitions from different positions. What's your pick when training Figure 8 sequences? Thanks @niall_phats and Uki crew for filming and inviting me to teach. #capoeira #movement #mobility #keepingfitafter40 #bouncebackcapoeira #voltaporcimacapoeira #handstands #calisthenics

07.01.2022 FROM TRADITIONAL AUTHORITY TO GLOBAL AUTHENTICITY (Summarising big chunks of our chat in Malaysia) Questions of authenticity often surface when cultural practices that originated in a specific place and time become transnational. They become even more contentious when the globalised cultural practice in discussion precedes the profit motive, had no organisational costs and were embedded in local meaning (for example, indigenous and traditional cultures). Capoeira is one of th...ese manifestations, but it stands alone as the only manifestation that simultaneously blends martial-arts, dance and game... Despite their transnational acceptance, and often mainstream co-optation, Capoeira, yoga and surfing come from peripheral countries, while skateboarding, snowboarding and parkour come from core countries. Capoeira has its origins in colonial Brazil and evolved as part of the Brazilian culture-scape. Yoga was once a spiritual discipline practised almost exclusively in ashrams and by sages who took vows of poverty. Surfing, which has its origins disputed chiefly among Pacific Island nations, was once a non-competitive form of play and communion with nature. "... the practice of Capoeira divides itself into three main orientations: Angola, Regional and Contemporânea. While some schools, unknowingly follow or eagerly adapt to the Western consumerist market’s demand for ‘exoticism’ and provide services based on these expectations, others tend to emphasise an overly traditionalist approach to oppose those who adapt to the Western consumerist market. The irony... is that both are responding to the consumerist market... both are expressed within the market’s logic arena, because most schools today rely on the provision of a service (Capoeira instruction) in exchange for money to run classes, performances and workshops... most schools worldwide operate under a franchise-like hierarchical framework that hinders more horizontal and non-hegemonic interactions within and across schools. 04.01.2022 #capoeira is special for many reasons, but laughter, the ability to make fun of ourselves (present only in those not ruled by inflated egos) and above all the its inclusive and healing features are very dear to me! Thanks @brauliocavalheiro for the chance of playing in your social program and connect with these amazing youngsters! Thanks @mestre_parente for your humour, joy and creativity (think #chucknorris lol )!! @obelixjens and @daniel_mikaelsson we should have thought of a #slutavaradålig -like shirt like this for Markus lol #voltaporcimacapoeira #bouncebackcapoeira #socialcapoeira
