22.01.2022 The expected attention span of children comes as a surprise to most people! Many assume it should be longer, but like anything else a child learns (such as craw...ling, walking, talking, writing), it takes time & practice to master. In my career as an Early Childhood Teacher/Educational Leader I have seen both educators & parents frustrated when a child won't sit still or concentrate for long periods of time, particularly when the experience just doesn't interest them. It's important to remember what is considered developmentally normal as well as potentially WHY something isn't holding their attention. Celebrate small wins each time a child concentrates in play, on a task or on anything else. Screen time doesn't provide sufficient practice, as this is 'passive entertainment' - the brain doesn't have to do the work. In fact, excessive screen time is unfortunately linked to reduced attention span/concentration skills. Even newborns can practise concentration - if you see them staring at something, then this is fantastic & a foundation for early learning! Let them be, if you can. Attention span can't be "forced" - much like how you can't flick a switch to make a child fall asleep (how good would that be though). It takes support, understanding & facilitating. Children are much more likely to focus if they ENJOY what they are doing, which is why learning through play is so effective! It is also why focusing on strengths & interests ensures genuine engagement for longer. Keep in mind that environmental, situational and physical aspects can impact a child's attention span. This could be things such as feeling sick, being too hot/cold, a noisy environment, tiredness, needing to go to the toilet, or being hungry. Developing good attention span can have a positive impact on life-long learning. What are your experiences with this? Any extra tips to add?

15.01.2022 There has been an increase in viral gastroenteritis (gastro) in childcare centres recently. Gastro is a common illness which can be more serious for young child...ren, older people and people with pre-existing conditions. Gastro is highly infectious, but you can help stop the spread by following these tips: Keep children at home while unwell. Children should not return to childcare until no diarrhoea or vomiting for 48 hours. Avoid preparing food for others for at least 24 hours if you have been sick. Wash hands with soap and running water. Wipe down surfaces. Seek medical advice if you are concerned or there are signs of dehydration, fever, severe abdominal pain or bloody diarrhoea.
