Greg Cavill initiated the development of an external beer garden with food, to engender a more cosmopolitan atmosphere in order to attract a wider band of patrons to the Hotel. ... He travelled extensively, gathering new ideas and expanding his vision for the Hotel. This innovation contravened several liquor licensing laws regrding eating and drinking in the State at the time. Joyce is Molly & Dick's only daughter (see previous history post), who at the age of 21 took over the hotel and was the youngest female licensee to run a hotel in Queensland. This came right in the middle of World War II, when there was a major liquor shortage and Brisbane was inundated with thousands of American Soldiers. After running the Hotel alone for three years, Joyce was joined by her younger brother Greg, who had been demobil...ised from the Navy. He was now 21 and able to legally work alongside his sister in the day to day management of this prosperous and immensely popular hotel.
