25.01.2022 Here's the new beast... Skeeter FX20 with a 250 Yammie on the back. Picked it up Thurs, on the water late in the arvo, then straight into the last round of the Tas classics on the Derwent. Talk about putting it through its paces, the river on Saturday was the worst conditions I've ever been out in. 75kph winds blowingWNW coming back under the Bowen to Austin's Ferry made for a very interesting ride. Couldn't take any photos as I was to tied up driving and Patty was to busy hanging on lol. One bloke broke his ribs and another went close.... Never thought bream fishing was a contact sport haha Ended up coming 5th for the round giving us 3rd for the championship so not a bad year. congrats to team Cranka and team Liquid Gold for 1st and second in the championship and Danny Suttel and his young bloke for winning the round.

23.01.2022 Darted out on the Derwent today with a couple of mates and picked up a few bream and this nice resident brownie! Beautiful weather till an afternoon easterly kicked in

21.01.2022 Caught a few other crackers including this beauty that fell to a bassday sugarslim 70

19.01.2022 Hey everyone! Headed up to Swansea for the second round of the Tas Bream Classic at the weekend where Pat and I managed 6th for the weekend which we were relatively happy with. Managed to pick up a few nice fish on the Megabass DogX Jrs and Berley Gulp Frys. The comp was won using Bassday Sugarpens which is another surface lure. We stopped off on the Thursday at another east coast hotspot and picked up some crackers on the DogX Hrs as well which was Awesime! Here's a 1.5jg cracker which hit the Albuno Raigo off the top :-)

19.01.2022 Fished the st Helen's Tas Bream Classic Round with Patrick Sullivan at the weekend, just scraped in to 4th position in a 30 team field with Tackle Us and the two Cranka Teams smashing some big fish and taking out the top 3 positions with some monstrous bags.... Tackle Us had a first day bag of nearly 5.5kgs! It was a windy weekend and the fishing was tough so we were happy to come in with a five fish bag each day. Check out the trippy looking bream in my right hand... It was the hunch back of notredam in the bream world!

19.01.2022 Hit the Derwent today with the wife and kids for a run on the ski biscuit and slipped the rods in as you do ;-) A quick run through on the ole pause retrieve and In less than 5 mins the cheese and kisses caught this nice 800gram Derwent Black on a Bassday 50mm sugar minnow!!! 5 mins later and the eldest daughter caught her first one too albeit a bit smaller. They caught a few more then back on the ski biscuit back to the ramp..... Fantastic way to spend the australia day public holiday!

18.01.2022 Finally got out on the Derwent for a run today chasing searunners with Danni Suttel. Magic day to be out there except for the clay targets or shotgun pellets that showered the skeeter...now that was interesting lol. We did manage our first trout for the season each though, mine lucky enough to be a 5lber :-). Gotta love the Derwent, always sonething going on!

16.01.2022 Said goodbye to the Avalanche last week....... 5.5 years and she did a good job..... Sad to see her go but her replacement should be a cracker!

15.01.2022 While everyone was working yesterday in the heatwave I had the Derwent to myself, didnt see another boat on the water and the bream were pretty constant spread throughout the entire system. Quite a few slashing at the topwaters with this kegger + being the best for the day picked up on a Megabass dog x jr in albino raigo! Back to reality today and sub 20 degrees... thats Tassie for ya!

13.01.2022 Quick morning sess thought I'd break the fly rod out and try some different flys to what Ive been using lately and a dozen casts in pulled a nice little 800gram bream. Couple more casts then spotted a cracker to my left about 8 meters away exposing its right flank....quick cast...strip.....strip-strip.....bow wave.....fly disapears....strike! Shoulders out and its nearly got a rooster tail coming off the fly line as its powering off down the shoreline and I'm down to the backing real quick! Never had that happen before. Couple of minutes and I have a beautiful 1.1kg blue nose to hand......never get sick of catching these things! Now to go and warm up...freezing out here atm

13.01.2022 Heard quite a few good reports of trout moving around the Lower Derwent of late. Quick arvo flick after work hopeful of a searunner. Saw a few moving but all out of casting range but spied this 2.5/3lb resident brownie chasing baitfish and managed to entice it. Shaping up to be a good trout opening weekend shortly

13.01.2022 Hey guys, had Big Colour Imaging in Sydney and owned by great mate Greg Seeto look into coming up with a logo for me and after a few different versions and a lot of work this is what they came up with... :-) Greg and his brothers also have a great website lure and fly, check it out if you love your fishing!

12.01.2022 Prefish Friday on the Derwent and Christened the skeeter with these two crackers.....it'd caught a plethora of Bass being Carl Jocumsens boat in the US but hadn't seen any bream before..... Looking forward to bringing a few trout to the gunnels over winter!

11.01.2022 Hey everyone Fished the 1st derwent trout classic at the weekend. Wet and windy as always at comp time down here. Managed 7th overall for the weekend and my partner for the weekend Lockie Young took out the "River Monster" (largest trout" with this 66cm beast. Wasnt in the greatest nick but the perfect comp fish, nice and long and didnt jump! Congrats to Andrew Pender and Damien Virieux of team liquid gold lox for taking out the 1st derwent trout classic

11.01.2022 I took a couple of keen young blokes out (10 & 13 years old) for a trip on the Derwent and I was fortunate enough to get this email :-) Apparently Jakob wrote it while waiting to fly out he was that stoked...... It's made my day! "My brother and I went fishing with Leigh on the Derwent Estuary. It was the best fishing trip I’ve ever had. We caught loads of massive black bream on lures. ... Leigh had a bass boat, which is a top-shelf fishing boat that is extremely fast which makes it a thrill. Leigh is a great guy who enjoys fishing with people who are passionate. Words can’t describe how much fun I had. Thanks Leigh. From Jakob Hansson (13yo)" See more

07.01.2022 Zoeys monster!!! Was only 5 years ago and you wouldn't dream of catching one this small in the Derwent, great signs for the river!

03.01.2022 -11.2 overnight at Liaweene, think its a record for June and the Skeeter was doing a good impersonation of the Aurora Australis in the middle of Swan Bay. Not a breath of wind till after lunch, the fog didn't lift till after then either.

02.01.2022 Derwent Qualifier is on next weekend so we're in the middle of a prefish ban ATM. The river has been fishing extraordinarily well for a couple of months so it all bodes well for some cracking bags! Up until a cold front came throughI late last week 30-50 fish days were the norm but that changed with the drop in temperature and fresh water coming down the river. Wasn't great for the bream but the trout started going off! A smattering of sea runners amongst them as well. Most of them small but I did bust off a 3lber at the boat trying to strong arm it when it wasn't ready, I'd forgotten how feisty they are lol.

01.01.2022 Winter bream on fly in a ft of water.....pumped!

01.01.2022 Here's a Lucky 7 interview I did for Lure and http://lureandfly.com/2013//19/lucky-7-with-leigh-mckenzie/ They do one about once a week And a big congrats to Ian Seeto who is one of the Lure and Fly team who just won back to back Aus Opens!!!
