24.01.2022 Early beans off the self seeded broadbeans today. Lots more on the way though, sadly the greenseas soil conditioner delivery truck may have gotten bogged right on a subsequent succession of broadbeans so not quite as many as I’d hoped. We will plant more as let’s be Frank, you Tasmanian’s have a thing for broadbeans. There’s never enough. Also some of Hilary’s gorgeous Iris are in flower just as our daffodils have faded. I reckon next year our bulbs will have enough to bunch a few...

23.01.2022 Things to come. Also, rss full of salads and greens and so on.

23.01.2022 Tony dropped off tropea onions and green garlic this morning. Full fridge with all the things from yesterday. We will pick more cucumbers after lunch because @chloeproud_ visited and bought them all.

22.01.2022 Okay- We will be at the garden from 9 till it’s too hot. Please bring hats, covered shoes, work clothes they don’t get too dirty usually- and drink bottles. We have a rainwater tank to top up. I’ve got pork sausages, tomatoes, cucumbers, snacks, there’s potatoes to dig up, seedlings to plant, seeds to plant and we will do whatever the kids wanna do- no pressure to actually achieve anything. It’s just about being in it- it is always good when the kids plant seeds, then seedlings a few weeks later then harvest and eat the things but really that’s just a bonus. Gimme a bell if there’s any questions- 0459304141 don’t stress if you can’t make it there’s always nearly every Monday for the rest of the year. Especially good in winter. Address in profile.

22.01.2022 I’m always surprised to discover that almost always the blockages in life are a matter of privilege. even in farming- it is the deciding factor in profitability, productivity, successive successful crops, and so on. This is an example of it here. New greenhouse. New plastic. New compost. New aged sawdust. New plants grown to order. New irrigation. New book on how to. New corn starch mulch. New tomahawks. New snips. New new new new new and one hour a day and wammo. More tomato...es than I can deal with. This is not the gardens greenhouse it’s our little project down at falls so I can spend my own money I earn elsewhere and the end product is high quality product worth more than I’ve invested monatariky. it’s very clear to me- if you invest in farming- you reduce your labour inputs by a staggering amount. If you can afford inputs you’ll be rewarded with greater yield and higher quality soil at the end of one season going into the next. What’s frustrating is the tiny margins small scale farmers make and the rate at which you can grow a farm on its own merits (profit) without paying yourself for your time. It’s demoralising. It makes me realise with the science pointing to small scale farming as a solution to a great many problems which we can talk about some other time but carbon sequestration, local food security, right up to national health and worse the coming food crisis where Australia is set to be the only net exporter of food left on earth. Here’s the problem- if it’s hard for able bodied, young, higher educated, fit, healthy people working multiple jobs to farm sustainably- and by that I mean where we can justify doing it as a form of income- how hard is it for everyone else? We don’t own land. Big problem. But land is so expensive especially in Australia- how can it be overcome? It takes a @neversinkfarm @jeanmartinfortier online course worth a few grand to learn how to do this stuff. It’s not hard. And frankly it’s not that much money to set up- really as far as businesses go it’s cheap. So why aren’t governments addressing the solution and funding this stuff. Really what would it cost- some crown land- plus maybe $50k... farm privilege thwarted.

22.01.2022 Full fridge; @breamcreekdairy milks, bags of salad, stir fry greens, coriander, cabbages, watercress, fennel, chillies. address one profile.

21.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Quick update; We are having our AGM a bit late this financial year as we’ve been working on the next 5 year strategic plan draft and other corporate documents and catching up all our financial returns to have a worthwhile meeting. Once we have all of that prepared I’ll advise of a date a few weeks in advance so we can have a good catch up. ... Bec

21.01.2022 Current situation at Falls Farm. Super need 25m of 3.6m wide shade cloth if anyone has any lying around they want to sell me. I’m going to Bunnings to buy some tomorrow if I don’t get any offers. Bec 0459304141

18.01.2022 Soon to be corn rows

18.01.2022 RSS; full. Salads, cooking greens, coriander, cabbages, bunches of Asian greens, collards greens, eggs, milks, leeks, baby fennel, baby turnips, all sorts. Go for it.

18.01.2022 Got plenty of this lavender available if anyone needs bunches for home culinary use or for accomodation decorations. This bunch is heading to Queensland to keep Great Grandma Day cheery in aged care to remind her of her holidays in Tassie.

18.01.2022 Had so much fun with the kids at the garden this morning. We had a little bbq, water fight, planted a bunch of corn seedlings, watered 2 times with lovely misting sprinklers that cooled the garden down- dug up a couple of nice salad rose potatoes that @chefmassimomele got to take home for being a good sport in the water fight- and it was rad. I also topped up some cucumbers in the full fridge.

15.01.2022 Cucumbers growing up fast now at Falls Farm. I predict Grown for Taste will be fruiting before ours so get ready to eat these surprisingly nutrition packed mini Lebanese smooth skinned beauties. Not long now as I’ve spotted tiny fruit on the vines as we’ve turned them a third time. It’s been at least 50deg in the greenhouse every day just about for a week so much water and much fussing has been going on to counterbalance. You may notice the black weed mat- it’s a compostable corn starch and so far we are loving it. The tomahawks (hook and string) are from @activevistagram

14.01.2022 Baby fennel is back and the asparagus is definitely delicious. Two spring hungry gap crops that you’ll see plenty of for a few weeks. rss still has plenty of everything I mentioned yesterday.

14.01.2022 More little bottles of local honey at the stall 1kg and 1.4kg bottles also available to order directly (send a direct message)

14.01.2022 Full fridge: asparagus, baby fennel, baby leek bundles, baby broadbeans, salad and stir fry bags, cos lettuce bags, baby turnips, all the milks, coriander, eggs, spring onions, tropea onions and the last of Tony’s cabbages, kale, and more. Address in profile cash honesty box no change: bank details on blackboard for transfers.

11.01.2022 We decided they are so good we better pick some. These cucumbers are in the roadside stall now- and we topped up the local honey too. There’s broadbeans, salad, cooking greens, tropea onions, milks, eggs, broccoli, Cauletti, herbs- mints, chives, thyme... that sort of thing.

11.01.2022 Full Fridge; Lots of bags of broadbeans and even hulled broadbeans for the folks with hands that struggle to do that job. New honey pots, Cauletti, salad, cooking greens, broccoli, broccolini, herbs, eggs and that sort of thing. Cucumbers days away.

10.01.2022 Good news- billions of blueberries just got dropped off at the rss. There’s a whole shelf of milks. Someone bought all the honey so I’ll replace that in the morning. There’s tropea and spring onions. Leeks. Eggs. Tomatoes. Cucumbers. More tomorrow in @jillygrows empty boxes. Don’t forget @breamcreekfarmersmarket this Sunday for those with terrible memories like my mate @ladyjo_and_co who have made several attempts to join our rabble but so far never on the right weekend. First Sunday of every month.

10.01.2022 Family day tomorrow 9:30-12:30; cloudy but otherwise nice morning for the garden. Maybe get some seeds planted, and more soil prep done for the next round of seeds and/or silage tarps on the green manure blocks. Pool after. Morning tea around 10ish.

09.01.2022 RSS: all the milks, eggs, coriander, greens, kale, leeks, baby fennel, possibly asparagus. There’s slightly more of that treasure coming through every day. Girls are laying 8-9 eggs a day too so expect eggs from now on. Little fluffy sweethearts. This is part of their covered area which got the old romanesco mulch and leaves, the rear run for filled with seed heads of our seed crops currently being cultivated into what will be shelling peas, Broadbeans, carrots and so on and so forth. While the mowing was going on this week I was planting seeds. Shallots, basil and sunflowers. Every chance we get we are planting seeds. Many many seeds.

08.01.2022 Spring time in the garden is busy and gorgeous. Thanks to Ky and Kathy for helping prepare the giant pumpkin bed for a BIG year. Fingers crossed for #breamcreekshow2021

08.01.2022 Tomorrow (Monday) is going to be very hot in Tassie. The morning should reach 28degC by 11 so we will start early 9 and wrap up lunchtime to get the kids out of the heat. The sandpit play area is shady and we will be watering a lot before the hot afternoon. It’s set to be cooler in Bream Creek with the ocean breeze we get than town so if your looking for a relaxed fun thing to do with the kids pop down. I’m going to work now to do work that’s not nice in the heat and to get w...ater into both farms so it’s ready for a shock tomorrow. It’s a good idea to do the same for your gardens if you haven’t already. These temperatures aren’t anything compared to where I come from but the difference is the lack of humidity in Tassie which makes the heat more destructive on plants and us. If you are new to Tassie 32 might not sound like much but temperatures aren’t the same. 32 in Tassie is equivalent to 42 in Queensland sub tropics and maybe closer to 50 in the tropics which plants love when there’s plenty of moisture. Technically a heat wave is 3 days of over 36 in Queensland- its 3 days of 26 in Tassie. Plus with the strength of the UV with patchy ozone here you will burn to a crisp really quickly here so plenty of sunscreen and a big hat! I wear my @akubraofficial hat religiously because it gives me about double my work capacity and I don’t feel sick after working in the sun when I wear it.

06.01.2022 Full fridge. Milk. Cucumbers. Cauliflowers, broccoli, broccolini, salad, cooking greens, baby chard bags, broadbeans, eggs, spring onions, honey herbs. address in profile.

04.01.2022 Full fridge; salads in two sizes 120g normal size and for families like mine that use a lot of salad 300g, cooking greens, watercress, coriander, English cress, baby leeks, milks, asparagus, English spinach, baby turnips, cabbages red, sugar loaf and savoy, eggs... I’ll pick more baby fennel, baby leeks and herbs like mint and thyme tomorrow. There’s also a couple of bags of potatoes. But I just realised they are in my car. I’ll drop them in tomorrow.

04.01.2022 Rss: Huge delivery from grown for taste- mix of cauliflower, broccoli, romanesco, bags of little button broccoli heads, fennel bulb, kohl rabi, milks, zucchini, broadbeans, eggs, salad, cos lettuce, heirloom lettuce head, all sorts of delicious herbs, green garlic, tropea onions, spring onions... and so on. address in profile. Cash- honesty box no change or transfer details on blackboard.

04.01.2022 Carlos and I jumped on the perfect soil moisture conditions today and started turning green manure in that was mulched/ mowed a few weeks ago, then again this morning, then had 3-4 passes with ro-ho. The soil is mint after a long rest with old crops let go through their life cycle, sprinkled green manure seeds (rye grass, oats, mustards and spent seeds) and amendments- like gypsum, sulphate of potash, kelp powder. Next we will add green seas soil conditioner with some old chicken manure and pass again just before planting corn seed and seedlings and things in the next week or two. I am looking forward to fresh sweet corn next year.

04.01.2022 Sorry the fridge got a bit bare today- I’ve just filled it with loads of tomatoes, zucchini, plums, milks, eggs, chillies, end of season tropea onions, leeks, biiiig cucumbers, medium cucumbers, honey and lavender. Tomorrow potatoes- king Edward’s, herbs and more eggs. friday more @jillygrows blueberries

03.01.2022 Rocket. Proper big spicy rocket. Some went to @templohobart some went to Rss some went in my gob. Plenty more where that came from and 3 more successions already planted. I anticipate a big resurgence of rocket love. #vegpredictions

02.01.2022 Smells amazing

02.01.2022 Rss update; lots of lovely greens, herbs, brassicas, fennel, eggs, milks, leeks, chillies, salad, cabbage and other things. Address in profile.

02.01.2022 Rarely these days do I notice that sparkling moment of this is it which if noticed enough seems to equate to happiness as a more general life theme... Today, there were several moments of this feeling combining these factors; 1. Working at the garden all day. 2. Satisfaction of doing the seasonal work- on time. 3. Surrounded by friends 4. Giggling children. 5. Dogs running around with their friends (stealing cake). ... And 6. getting a lot done while we solve the worlds problems in the gorgeous spring sunshine. It’s more than that- it is being a part of, belonging to, contributing to, and building community- it’s a human need and I strongly recommend if your hurting to find your place in the world that meets this need. It’s not the same for everyone but it’s often found in the most human of things- things we have been doing together to thrive for all human histoIt won’t fix all your problems, but it will give you something to recall in vivid detail on your death bed. Suz Podz and the boys joined me this morning to discover that Jesse had mowed the jungle of grass down over the weekend to my great delight. We had morning tea otherwise known as 4th breakfast and planted sugar snap peas at the snow pea teepee (I’m watching you blackbirds). Which the dogs all helped trod the seeds in like the helpful pooches they are. Gemma and Kathy both arrived as we were harvesting some juicy baby fennel (rss), then we had a lunch at home with the whole team, chatted drank tea- the kids smothered Gemma- and returned to plant trays of seeds (zucchini, pumpkin, rocket, lettuce mix, sugar snaps) and plant brassicas in bed 4 which Gemma formed with many loads of chicken manure and sand. Fred also did one of these rows when he dropped in on his way home from work so two full rows of brassicas. Thanks everyone made our day
